Can Taking Fish Oil Cause Heart Palpitations
Smidt Heart Institute researchers have found that taking high doses of fish oil supplementsspecifically one gram or more per daymay increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to sudden death. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked at data from more than 2,000 people who were followed for an average of 10 years.
The researchers found a link between high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and the development of heart disease, but the link was not strong enough to be considered a cause-and-effect relationship. In fact, the study found no association between the amount of EPA and DHA in peoples diets and their risk for developing a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
But the researchers did find that people with the highest amounts of these fatty acid in their diets were more likely to develop heart attacks and strokes than those who had the lowest levels, suggesting that the higher levels may be contributing to the increased risk.

Fish oil comes from the fatty tissue of fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring and lake trout. The primary fats found in fish are omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fat.
The two main types of omega-3s found in fish are eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid .
Most fish oil supplements consist of marine-derived EPA and DHA. The difference between products will be the EPA to DHA ratio, which can range from 0.3 to 3, explains Tyler Preston, RD, registered dietitian, performance coach and founder of the practice Preston Performance.
