Can Kidney Infection Cause Diarrhea | Loose Stool in Kidney Failureà¤à¤¿à¤¡à¤¨à¥ à¤à¥ बà¥à¤®à¤¾à¤°à¥ मà¥à¤ दसà¥?त

The five stages of CKD refer to how well your kidneys are working. Kidney disease can get worse in time. In the early stages , your kidneys are still able to filter waste out of your blood. In the later stages , your kidneys must work harder to filter your blood and may stop working altogether.

The goal at each stage of CKD is to take steps to slow down the damage to your kidneys and keep your kidneys working as long as possible.

Incidence Of Aki In Diarrheal Illness

Table Table11 shows demographic, clinical, and hospital characteristics of adults admitted with a primary diagnosis of diarrhea in 2012. The most common ICD-9 diagnosis code associated with infectious diarrhea was 008 , which includes diarrhea caused by both bacterial and viral infections. For non-infectious diarrhea, the most common diagnosis codes were for diverticulitis and vascular insufficiency of the intestine . Patients admitted with infectious diarrhea were nearly 10 years older on average than patients admitted with non-infectious diarrhea. Nearly two-thirds of hospitalizations for diarrheal illness were in women. Persons admitted with a primary diagnosis of infectious diarrhea were more likely to be coded as having CKD, immunodeficiency and neurologic diseases relative to persons with non-infectious diarrhea. Persons admitted with non-infectious diarrhea were more likely to have a secondary diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease than those admitted for infectious diarrhea. A significantly higher proportion of persons with a primary diagnosis of non-infectious diarrhea were admitted in an elective capacity . Volume depletion was coded more commonly in persons with infectious diarrhea . Prevalence of sepsis and shock was similar . There were modest differences in race, income, and hospital characteristics across the infectious and non-infectious diarrhea categories.

What Is Acute Renal Failure

The kidneys perform many vital functions. One of those is the removal of toxins from the body that build up simply from cell function causing production of waste products. Kidney failure means that the kidneys cannot remove these toxins. Acute kidney failure means that the problem developed over a few days.

Many different things can cause acute kidney failure. Certain poisons are well known for their ability to damage the kidney. These poisons include the following:

  • Antifreeze
  • Raisins
  • Certain drugs, including pain pills such as aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Severe infections in the kidney from bacteria can cause sudden kidney failure. Although kidney infections can occur spontaneously, usually some reason exists why the cat or dog cannot fight off infection as easily . Leptospires are a group of bacteria that can cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Dogs get leptospirosis from urine or water contaminated by infected animals .

Anything that decreases blood flow through the kidney can cause kidney failure. This includes dehydration from any cause . Heatstroke or other disorder causing massive damage to blood vessels, such as bee stings or snakebites, can lead to kidney failure.

What Are The Specific Types Of Feline Kidney Disease

There are many types of kidney disease in cats. Some are congenital and some are developmental.

Your veterinarian will be able to tell you which type your cat has.

While I cant get into every specific type of renal disease, here are some types you may encounter.

    • Renal agenesis is the failure of kidney formation: sometimes kidneys dont form at all.
    • Renal dysplasia: means abnormal kidney development.
    • If one or both kidneys are displaced, your cat may be diagnosed with renal ectopia.
    • And then there is polycystic kidney disease which comes with the formation of cysts throughout the kidney tissue.

    Kidneys are complex.

That means there are a lot of things that could go wrong.

Structural issues, blood vessel problems, responses to outside influences, all the way down to the cells that make up the kidneystheres so much to know about these small but important organs.

While listing all of the exact diseases and congenital problems are beyond the scope of this article, I found a comprehensive list right here.

Risk Factors For Developing Urinary Tract Infections

    Kidney Stone Symptoms Cause Diarrhea

Urinary tract infections are a very common condition, especially in women, and account for between 1 to 3 percent of all general practice consultations.

Gender is a primary risk factor for urinary tract infections. UTIs are much more common in women than men, and it is believed that roughly half of all women will experience a UTI in their lifetime. Conversely, under the age of 50, only five to eight men out of every 10,000 report experiencing a UTI.

Although there are a number of risk factors specific to either men or women, the majority of risk factors are not gender-specific, including:

    • Age. The likelihood of a UTI increases with age. Over the age of 50, incidences of UTIs increase for both genders, with less disparity between the number of cases in men and women
    • Urinary catheters can cause bacteria to enter the urinary tract
    • Family history of UTIs
    • Urinary tract blockages and conditions which may impair urine flow, such as kidney stones, chronic constipation or abnormal urinary function/structure
    • Diabetes, specifically diabetes mellitus or type two diabetes, due to high urine glucose levels increasing the risk of infection
    • Poor personal hygiene may increase the presence of bacteria in the urinary area
    • Reduced mobility may result in longer gaps between urinations, resulting in a higher risk of infection
    • A weakened immune system reduces the bodyââ¬â¢s ability to defend against infection

    What Causes Kidney Failure

Kidney failure may occur from an acute situation that injures the kidneys or from chronic diseases that gradually cause the kidneys to stop functioning.

In acute renal failure, kidney function is lost rapidly and can occur from a variety of insults to the body. Since most people have two kidneys, both kidneys must be damaged for complete kidney failure to occur. Fortunately, if only one kidney fails or is diseased it can be removed, and the remaining kidney may continue to have normal kidney function. If both patients kidneys are injured or diseased, a donor kidney may be transplanted.

The list of causes of kidney failure is often categorized based on where the injury has occurred.

Prerenal causes causes are due to decreased blood supply to the kidney. Examples of prerenal causes of kidney failure are:

    • Hypovolemia due to blood loss

    Why this happens:

A build-up of wastes in the blood can make food taste different and cause bad breath. You may also notice that you stop liking to eat meat, or that you are losing weight because you just dont feel like eating.

    What patients said:

Foul taste in your mouth. Almost like youre drinking iron.

I dont have the appetite I had before I started dialysis, I must have lost about 10 pounds.

    What You Need To Know

Kidney Infection, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.
    • Issues with urinating or passing stools are referred to as bladder and bowel dysfunction.
    • Bladder and bowel problems often originate with nerve or muscle dysfunction, as these systems control the flow of urine and the release of stool.
    • Other health issues may cause bladder and/or bowel dysfunction, including medicinal side effects, stress, neurologic diseases, diabetes, hemorrhoids and pelvic floor disorders.
    • Therapy and management for these conditions can range from dietary changes and exercise to electrical stimulation and surgery depending on individual diagnosis.

Bladder or bowel incontinence means a problem holding in urine or stool. You may have unwanted passage of urine or stool that you cant control. These conditions can be stressful to deal with. But dont feel embarrassed about talking to your healthcare provider. They are used to dealing with these issues, and can help you manage the problem.

When Should You See A Doctor

Kidney infections can lead to long-term kidney damage if theyre left untreated, so dont hesitate to contact your doctor if you believe that you have or your child has a kidney problem.

The best way to know for sure if you have a kidney infection is to get a diagnosis from your doctor. Theyll perform a physical examination of your abdominal and pelvic areas. A clean-catch urine sample typically follows this. Youll need to follow the instructions carefully so you dont contaminate this sample.

Also, you should always contact your doctor if you see blood in your urine or experience long-term or severe pain in your tummy, lower back, or genital regions.

Treatment For Utis Vs Kidney Infection Treatment

UTIs, including kidney infections, can be treated with a course of antibiotics. The type of antibiotic can depend on the type of bacteria thats causing your infection as well as how severe your infection is.

The doctor will often start you on an antibiotic that works against a wide variety of UTI-causing bacteria. If a urine culture is performed, the doctor may switch your antibiotic to one thats most effective at treating the specific bacterium thats causing your infection.

Simple UTIs can be treated with short 3- to 5-day courses of antibiotics. Treatment for kidney infections generally lasts 7 to 14 days, depending on which class of antibiotic is prescribed.

You may begin to feel better after only a few days on antibiotics. However, you should still make sure that you complete your entire treatment course as prescribed. If you do not take all of your antibiotics, the stronger bacteria may not be killed, causing your infection to persist and flare up again.

If youre pregnant, your doctor may also request a repeat urine sample following a kidney infection, even if your symptoms have resolved. This allows them to check to see whether your infection has completely cleared.

If there are still bacteria present in the sample, you may need another course of antibiotics. Persistence of bacteria can potentially harm an unborn baby.

People with severe kidney infections may need to be hospitalized. In this case, you may receive antibiotics and fluids intravenously.

If you have a UTI and it isnt treated, it may lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections may cause early labor. Fortunately, asymptomatic bacteriuria and bladder infections are usually found and treated before the kidneys become infected. If your doctor treats a urinary tract infection early and properly, it wont hurt your baby.

    Are Urinary Tract Infections Contagious

    Kidney Stones Cause Diarrhea

No. Urinary tract infections are not contagious.

    • Lower abdominal pain or pelvic pressure or pain
    • Mild fever , chills, and just not feeling well
    • Urethra : Burning with urination

    Upper urinary tract infection

Symptoms develop rapidly and may or may not include the symptoms for a lower urinary tract infection.

    • Fairly high fever
    • Vomiting
    • Flank pain: pain in the back or side, usually on only one side at about waist level

In newborns, infants, children, and elderly people, the classic symptoms of a urinary tract infection may not be present. Other symptoms may indicate a urinary tract infection.

    • Newborns: fever or hypothermia , poor feeding, jaundice
    • Infants: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, poor feeding, not thriving
    • Children: irritability, eating poorly, unexplained fever that doesnt go away, loss of bowel control, loose bowels, change in urination pattern
    • Elderly people: fever or hypothermia, poor appetite, lethargy, change in mental status

Pregnant women are at increased risk for an UTI. Typically, pregnant women do not have unusual or unique symptoms. If a woman is pregnant, her urine should be checked during prenatal visits because an unrecognized infection can cause pregnancy health complications.

Although most people have symptoms with a urinary tract infection, some do not.

What Tests And Procedures Diagnose Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease usually causes no symptoms in its early stages. Only lab tests can detect any developing problems. Anyone at increased risk for chronic kidney disease should be routinely tested for development of this disease.

    • Urine, blood, and imaging tests are used to detect kidney disease, as well as to follow its progress.
    • All of these tests have limitations. They are often used together to develop a picture of the nature and extent of the kidney disease.
    • In general, this testing can be performed on an outpatient basis.

    Urine tests

Urinalysis: Analysis of the urine affords enormous insight into the function of the kidneys. The first step in urinalysis is doing a dipstick test. The dipstick has reagents that check the urine for the presence of various normal and abnormal constituents including protein. Then, the urine is examined under a microscope to look for red and white blood cells, and the presence of casts and crystals .

Only minimal quantities of albumin are present in urine normally. A positive result on a dipstick test for protein is abnormal. More sensitive than a dipstick test for protein is a laboratory estimation of the urine albumin and creatinine in the urine. The ratio of albumin and creatinine in the urine provides a good estimate of albumin excretion per day.

    What Are Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are painful accumulations of minerals that form in your kidneys and can cause serious pain. Often smaller stones can pass freely through your urinary tract without symptoms, but larger stones can become stuck in the urinary tract causing severe abdominal or lower back pain and other symptoms.

Why Do I Get Nausea When I Have Kidney Failure

Kidney disease patients, especially for those with kidney failure, they are more likely to experience gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and vomiting. As these two discomforts will affect patients life quality largely, it is essential to know about the causes and treatments:

The normal range of GFR is 80 to 120 ml/min. In the third stage, GFR falls to 30~59 ml/min. Serum creatinine is 186-442umol/L, the normal range of which is 44 to 103 umol/L. Symptoms can be such as pain in lower back, increased urine at night, fatigue, and so on.

Nausea, like pain, is difficult to assess in veterinary practice, so identification of biomarkers for nausea would be very useful in helping show which cats with CKD might benefit from anti-nausea treatment.

    When To Seek Medical Attention

If you experience any symptoms of a kidney infection or a UTI more generally, its important to see a health professional to have them evaluated right away.

This is true especially if certain symptoms seem to appear suddenly, indicating that your UTI is spreading or growing more severe.

A kidney infection that isnt treated effectively can become chronic , potentially causing permanent damage to your kidneys that impairs their function.

An untreated kidney infection can also lead to dangerous complications in the short term, such as a blood infection . Symptoms of sepsis include:

    • Fever and chills

If your healthcare professional prescribes you antibiotics:

    • Take antibiotics exactly as your healthcare professional tells you.
    • Do not share your antibiotics with others.
    • Do not save antibiotics for later. Talk to your healthcare professional about safely discarding leftover antibiotics.

Drink plenty of water or other fluids. Your healthcare professional might also recommend medicine to help lessen the pain or discomfort. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have any questions about your antibiotics.
