Leaky Gut Supplements and Probiotics: Do They Work?

Like with white wine, the crucial thing here is to choose dry over sweet so we cut down our sugar intake.

My favorite choices of red are thus pinot noir and a nice big shiraz . But other dry red wines include merlot and zinfandel.

What I perhaps like most about red wine is that it has a lot of taste memory, meaning it is relatively hard to over indulge.

If You Like Beer Then Try To Find A Gluten Free Beer

Sadly, normal beer should be a permanent no go for us leaky gutters. Seriously. It is literally the worst alcohol you can drink as it combines gluten and yeast and sugar all into one horrible package.

If you decide that the nice bitter taste of beer on a hot summers day is just too good to say adios to, then search out a gluten free beer.

Let me firstly wish you good luck in finding one that tastes good.

And secondly, let me remind us that gluten-free beers are still made from grains, still come packed with yeast and although not as bad as gluten-based beers, they sure as heck arent helping our guts stay in good health.

So my best advice is to just avoid ALL beer indefinitely.

Admittedly, I personally have a gluten-free beer a couple times during summer. But thats just about it.

Understanding The Gut Microbiome

An example thats often used when explaining the gut microbiome is to imagine it as a garden. This is a good analogy because it shows us how it works.

Following this example, the thick, lush grass of your garden would be the prebiotics in your gut, while the probiotics are like the ladybugs, earthworms, butterflies and other insects that feed on the grass to keep it healthy.

The last thing you want is a garden with barren grass because thats a sign of an unhealthy gut environment that can cause leaky walls of the small intestine and lead to illness and disease. Enter leaky gut.

The 3 Things To Look For In A Great Digestive Enzyme Supplement

Leaky Gut Repair
  • It must have a broad range of different enzymes. That way it will help you digest multiple food groups, ie protein, carbs, fats28. I would always look for a product with over 10 different enzymes.
  • It should ideally be plant based, so it can work throughout the wide pH range of your gut AND is strong enough to effectively break down your food.
  • It should be dosed strongly across ALL enzymes in the formula, but especially the kings of enzymes, being protease, lipase, amylase and cellulase31.
  • BONUS it should be gluten free, dairy free and soy free32 and most importantly, this should be independently verified by a 3rd party laboratory.

    Weight Gain And Obesity

Weight loss resistance and obesity have been linked to an imbalance of bacteria in the microbiome. Studies in mice found that overweight mice had a higher number of the bacteria Firmicutes, while thin mice had a higher proportion of the Bacteroidetes bacteria. In human cases, the beneficial bacteria called Lactobacillus rhamnosus was found to support weight loss in women. The microbiome factor may turn out to be a key component for many people seeking to lose weight their body has been holding on to for years.

    Symptoms Of Leaky Gut

There are many ill effects of leaky gut. As a result of your immune system being exposed to foods, bacteria, and chemicals it was never meant to see, it can flip into a permanent state of on sending a constant barrage of inflammatory chemicals through your body.

These immune chemicals and the inflammation they cause can lead to symptoms as diverse as acne, eczema, food sensitivities, hormonal imbalances, body pain, brain fog, insomnia, and even autoimmune diseases like Crohns, Hashimotos thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis.

    What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome is when your gut lining has cracks or holes that result in toxins and partially digested food to get through to the tissues and bloodstream outside of the lining. Essentially, a leaky gut, which is also known as increased intestinal permeability, means that substances are going where they were not intended to due to the weak state of your gut lining.

No ones gut is perfectly impermeable, of course, because the intestine walls have opening for water and important nutrients to pass through your bloodstream. But when the degree of leaky gut becomes too much, there is reason for concern. Leaky gut syndrome could lead to inflammation and eventually other issues involving the digestive tract. Because bacteria and toxins enter the bloodstream itself when one has a leaky gut, this inflammation can be widespread and affect your body way beyond the digestive system!

Leaky gut is a digestive condition, though it hasnt been formally recognized to be a medical diagnosis. Scientists continue to conduct further research on the effects of intestinal permeability and how it can really affect the body, but there is some scientific evidence that suggest a leaky gut may hold a significant link to a variety of medical conditions. Regardless, supporting gut function is important, and if you find yourself experiencing gut issues, its crucial that you pay close attention to what you eat.

Finally Compare Yourself Against The 10 Symptoms Of Leaky Gut

Taking Probiotics for Weight Loss, Skin Health, and Fixing Leaky Gut

Given that testing can be somewhat inconclusive, a quick way to work out the probability of leaky gut is to speak to your doctor about your symptoms.

And then of course, contrast them against the most common symptoms of leaky gut:

  • Food allergies / intolerances
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease, eg Crohns Disease, Ulcerative Colitis etc
  • Digestive problems
  • Skin problems like eczema, acne, Rosacea, Hives, Psoriasis, rashes etc
  • Brain fog or general fatigue or chronic headaches
  • Mood swings and depression
  • Allergies, eg seasonal, pet etc
  • Nutrient deficiencies

    Inflammation Can Trigger Leaky Gut

There are varying degrees of the severity of Leaky Gut Syndrome which are induced by several inflammatory triggers including:

    • Antibiotics
    • Environmental toxins
    • Too little or too much physical activity

Any of these factors can put the immune system into overdrive thereby damaging the gut lining. A damaged gut lining allows bacteria, large food particles, and debris to enter the bloodstream and be mistaken for potentially harmful microbes. Thus, the immune system launches an even more significant attack generating a buildup of inflammation within the gut that can ultimately spread to the joints, skin, thyroid, and also the brain.

This spreading inflammation is commonly referred to as chronic inflammation.

Consider Eating Smaller Meals And Matching Food Groups Better

When trying to repair your leaky gut, attention to detail matters. Thats why even the more trivial ideas are worth trying out.

So with this idea Im basically suggesting

    • Eat 4-5 small meals a day, as opposed to 3 big ones. A day of eating would then look something like: green hulk shake , snack , small lunch , afternoon snack and dinner .
    • Combine food groups smartly. This is pretty easy when youre eating a leaky gut diet. i.e. the foods that are hard to combine are pretty much out. But just in case you are eating fruits , make sure they are eaten as much as possible by themselves or at least away from heavy protein meals.

Now with all of that said, it is worth noting that I am not completely sold on eating smaller meals and more often.

Thats because I do like the thinking behind 2-3 meals a day only, since this gives the digestive system plenty of time for breaks.

So like with all ideas on this list, it really comes down to personal experimentation and seeing what works best for your digestive system.

    IDEA #29

    Systemic Disease Infections And Dysbiosis

    Leaky Gut Guardian Repair Powder

Diseases and infections can cause the gut lining to loosen, causing leaky gut, which is why we have to keep our immune system healthy and strong and support the gut in many disease states. Infections can cause an imbalance of the healthy and opportunistic bacteria in the gut, which can result in the overgrowth of bacteria, yeast, fungi, and/or parasites. Its been shown that the pathology of disease can be tied to the degree of intestinal permeability.

If You Like White Wine Add Ice Cubes Or Water Or Seltzer

This spritzer idea might seem sacrilegious to my French readers, but hey, it is an easy way for us to keep our total wine consumption limited, whilst still being able to enjoy a few glasses on a Saturday night.

The ideal amount of dilution would be 50%. So it is half wine, half non-sugar mixer .

Probably the #1 thing to look out for when choosing a white wine, is dry v sweet. The former contains much less sugar. That means sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio are your new BFFs.

I personally tend to limit my white wine consumption to the summer months, and so generally only drink red wine, which leads us to the next point

Remove Inflammatory Foods From Your Diet

The first step to healing your gut is to remove all inflammatory and potentially damaging foods from your diet. In the case of leaky gut, some of the most common culprits include gluten, sugar, processed foods, alcohol and dairywhich can all damage the intestinal lining. Gluten is particularly damaging for those with celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome , while substances like sugar can also contribute to inflammation, dysbiosis and leaky gut.

    Eat More Healthy Fats

N-butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, helps feed the cells that line the gut and help them heal. Your gut bacteria can produce more n-butyrate if you feed them soluble fibers in fruits and vegetables. You also can get n-butyrate in the form of Ghee, which is clarified butter. Another source of healthy fat is coconut oil, which contains medium-chain fatty acids that are good for the gut!

Add Healing Foods To Your Diet

Psoriasis & Leaky Gut Syndrome | Intestinal Permeability | Bacteria | Probiotics | Plantbased Diet

If you begin to think of food as medicine, you can really start to heal your leaky gut. Some of the most healing foods are:

    • Bone broth The collagen and amino acids in bone broth can heal and seal the intestinal wall. See the bone broth benefits here.
    • Fermented products The probiotics in fermented products, like water kefir and sauerkraut, support a balanced intestinal ecosystem.
    • Omega-3s Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to help reduce inflammation and improve symptoms of autoimmune disease . Some types of fish are abundant in omega-3s, but they also can introduce toxins.
    • Coconut oil Contains healthy fats and anti-fungal properties that can kill harmful yeasts in the gut and help you lose weight.
    • Supplements Certain supplements, like probiotics, can help your body digest foods properly and repair the intestinal lining.

These things can ALL help improve your gut health, but changing your diet combined with taking a good probiotic supplement is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to lose weight and heal your gut.

No matter what supplement you use, you should take AT LEAST 50 billion units of probiotics daily from a minimum of 10 different sources for best results.

While you dont need to purchase only refrigerated probiotics, make sure the packaging is well sealed. Its also essential that the packaging is dark to protect from light damage.

Fulvic Acid And Why It Works

Fulvic acid is created as nature breaks down plant and animal life through thousands of years into microscopic organisms.

These microorganisms are organized under the term humus in three categories.

    • Humins
    • Humic acid
    • Fulvic acid

These categories are decided by their solubility, . This, in turn, decides their ability to be absorbed into the human body and thats the exciting part.

Humins are unable to dissolve in water at any pH level. Humic acid can dissolve in water above a pH value of 7 and fulvic acid can dissolve in water at any pH value.

Summing up this means fulvic acid has the ultimate criteria for affecting your body. Humic acid too but to a lesser degree while humins are of little concern to you.

Its possible because fulvic acid rounds up the microorganisms decomposed much further than humins and humic acid.

Being the lightest of these three humic siblings it also packs the highest levels of nutrients and minerals with strong antioxidant compounds and equally important, it has shed the toxic metals found in eg. Shilajit supplements.

This gives it the best ability for providing your gut with all the nutrients it needs to reach a healthy balance.

In fact, the far point of the decomposed natural goodness is the most interesting ability of fulvic acid.

Because its small enough to pass through your intestinal wall and enter your cells and bloodstream, even under healthy circumstances, is what makes them so powerful for improving your gut health.

    Not exactly.

Other Studies That Shed Some Light On The Merits Of Taking Probiotics With A Leaky Gut

    KaraMD Vital Restore (90 Capsules)

Well begin with animal studies that have looked at the effects of probiotic administration in animal models of DSS-induced colitis, since this is perhaps the most similar to the DSS-induced inflammation in the gut-on-a-chip. Unfortunately, most of these studies provided the probiotics before or in conjunction with the DSS treatment. However, the one study I could find that looked at the effects of probiotic VSL #3 provided for two weeks after DSS administration found no difference in treatment outcomes the probiotic was neither harmful nor helpful.4

In other animal models of colitis, VSL#3 supplementation after the onset of colitis and disruption of barrier function led to significant improvement in symptoms. Di Giacinto et al. found that VSL#3 administration during a remission period increased production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and resulted in milder colitis symptoms.5 Soo et al. found that VSL#3 upregulated expression of a mucosal enzyme important for cell turnover and reduced disease activity in both mice and humans with ulcerative colitis.6

Other human studies have shown that VSL#3 supplementation can be helpful in diseased states. A 2014 meta-analysis found that VSL#3 induced remission in 43.8% of patients with mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis, with no serious side effects reported.7 The probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917 has also shown to be beneficial for inducing or maintaining remission in ulcerative colitis.8,9
