I hurried her into my car, backed out of the driveway and took off for the hospital. About halfway there, she told me to pull the car over. She was feeling better, but I insisted on taking her to the hospital. After a quick exam, the doctor said she was fine and blamed the chest pains not on a heart attack but on acid reflux.

The culprit? Our traditional Sunday afternoon pasta and tomato sauce, eaten just a few hours before.

While an estimated 40 million Americans live with what they describe as chronic pain, many more suffer from acute bouts of pain, such as acid reflux and headaches. But be it chronic or acute, pain is something wed all like to live without.

Dr. Neal Barnard, founder and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and president of the Cancer Project in Washington, D.C., believes that pain-free living could be a dietary change away.

What we know is that when people eliminate certain foods from their diets, their symptoms are eliminated or reduced, so we know that there is a link here, says Barnard, who is an outspoken advocate of vegetarianism. The link could be a number of things, ranging from a reaction to certain proteins found in particular foods, to an increase in cholesterol, which can irritate the lining of our arteries, he says.

But as Dr. Ali Askari, director of rheumatology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, warns, results may vary.

Pain In Chest When Drinking Hot Tea

Chest pain after a cup of hot tea usually indicates an issue in the food pipe. The most common reasons are heartburn and esophageal damage:

  • Hot foods and drinks might exacerbate acid reflux for some people. Such people might experience heartburn after drinking hot tea, which feels like a burning sensation around the center of the chest.
  • Drinking very hot tea can cause a so-called reversible thermal injury to the esophagus. Such esophageal damage might explain why your chest hurts when you drink hot tea.

Another possible problem is the increased risk of developing esophageal cancer in the long term. According to this study, there is a link between drinking very hot tea and esophageal cancer.

Green Tea And Herbal Tea How Acidic They Are

Both the teas are though less acidic but herbal tea is the least acidic. Unlike it has caffeine. Both the teas are actually helpful in curing acid reflux and heartburn. But it is important that you should know how these teas are different from each other.

Is Green tea Acidic

Green, black, white and oolong teas are almost the same. The only difference is in the processing of them as per their properties and purpose to serve. They are all extracted from a plant named Camellia sinensis. But as black tea is processed with fermentation and green tea is with the younger ones.

They are less acidic because of their richness in antioxidation. They are sour and very raw, not the soothing one for beginners at least. You need to give them time to settle in your body. They, however, boost the body’s immune system and fight the acidic agents which brings it the category of non-acidic tea.

Is Herbal Tea Acidic

Herbal tea is the least acidic tea amongst the teas mentioned. Tea is rich in antioxidants and vitamins that cures any type of infections and uneasiness. They are mostly prepared from the dried leaves, flowers, fruits, and spices of a plant. This actually boosts the immune system and fights the acidic agents to calm your stomach heartburn caused by acid reflux.

Some of the herbal teas and green are listed below:

Digestive Problems In Children

Evidence suggests that chamomile tea can relieve digestive problems in children including diarrhea and colic. In one study, an apple pectin-chamomile extract reduced the course of diarrhea in children and also helped relieve symptoms.

In fact, for 85% of children, diarrhea ended sooner in children treated with chamomile and pectin than in the placebo group, who saw 58% improvement.

Other clinical trials studied the efficacy of chamomile as colic treatment. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 68 healthy term infants suffering from colic. This extensive study found that after 7 days of treatment, the tea eliminated the colic in 57% of the infants, whereas the placebo reduced symptoms in only 26% of cases.

Iron Deficiency And Anemia

Green tea reduces the absorption of iron from food. Its polyphenols bind to the iron and make it less available to your body. It was previously believed that green tea hindered the absorption of non-heme iron by about 25%.2 But recent findings suggest that it hinders heme or plant iron absorption too.3

Add a dash of lemon to your green tea to check iron malabsorption.

However, vitamin C increases non-heme iron absorption, so you can squeeze lemon into your tea or consume other vitamin-C rich foods such as peas, broccoli, and tomatoes with your meal. If you have an iron deficiency like anemia, the National Cancer Institute recommends consuming tea between meals.4

Drink Plenty Of Fluids To Aid Digestion

Can Coffee Give You Heartburn While Pregnant

It’s important to keep drinking, especially water. It encourages the passage of waste through your digestive system and helps soften poo.

Fibre acts like a sponge, absorbing water. Without fluid, the fibre cannot do its job and you’ll get constipation.

A good way to make sure you’re getting enough fluids is to drink a glass of water with every meal. Avoid caffeine drinks as they can cause heartburn.

Fill Up On Fibre To Prevent Constipation

It’s a good idea to try to eat more fibre or roughage, as most people in the UK do not get enough. A diet rich in fibre can help digestion and prevent constipation.

Aim for the recommended dietary intake of 30g of fibre a day.

For a healthy bowel, you need fibre from a variety of sources, such as:

  • wholemeal bread
  • beans
  • oats

Some people find cereals and grains bring on bloating and irritable bowel syndrome. If that’s the case, get your fibre from fruit and vegetables instead.

Acidity In Bottled Tea

The other property of ordinary breakfast tea, such as Liptons which some people call black tea that aggravates GERD is its acidity. Acidic beverages irritate the esophageal lining on contact so they can be particularly bothersome to people suffering from acid reflux or GERD. While normal brewed tea is actually quite low in acid, bottled teas are another matter. Most are fortified with an acid preservative such as ascorbic acid, and many are also flavored with citrus juices, making them more acidic.

Tips For Getting Better

If you are suffering from acid reflux and heartburn, my best tips for getting better are:

  • Avoid drinking coffee, tea, or any other drinks that contain caffeine. At least until you are free of any symptoms.
  • Start drinking the herbal teas mentioned in this article. Drink them after each meal. Try which ones feel best for you. You can start with ginger and chamomile tea.
  • Avoid eating greasy and spicy foods for a while. Eat something that is easy on your stomach. Here are some of my favorites: oatmeal, yogurt and granola, clear fish or chicken soup, steamed fish with ginger sauce, steamed vegetables, and chicken breast.
  • Avoid eating too much or too late in the evening, and dont lay down after eating. You can go for a relaxing walk after eating, its good for digestion.
  • Quit drinking alcoholfor a while. Especially hard liquors are bad for your already irritated esophagus.
  • Quit smoking cigarettes.
  • Try to get rid of stress and sleep well. I know this is not easy, but you can try some of these tips: stop working and using a computer and phone at least one hour before going to bed. Instead, put on some relaxing music or meditate, and drink a cup of chamomile tea.

The Effects Of Caffeine On Gerd

Caffeine a major component of many varieties of both coffee and tea has been identified as a possible trigger for heartburn in some people. Caffeine may trigger GERD symptoms because it can relax the LES.

Still, the problem isnt so clear-cut because of conflicting evidence and significant differences within both types of beverages. In fact, according to Gastroenterology and Hepatology , there are no large, well-designed studies that show that the elimination of coffee or caffeine consistently improves GERD symptoms or outcomes.

In fact, the current guidelines from the American College of Gastroenterology no longer recommend routine dietary changes for the treatment of reflux and GERD.

Ideal Types Of Tea Containers Are:

Glass: Glass containers are generally airtight. They are ideal for tea storage as long as they are kept in the dark, away from sunlight.

Ceramic: Though finding an air-tight ceramic caddie can be rare and expensive, it is a beautiful medium to store and showcase your tea.

Metal: Metal or tin-lined containers are easily available. In fact, there is a growing market of beautifully decorated metal tins with quirky designs. These containers are air-tight and an attractive choice for tea storage.

Plastic: Though plastic is a cheaper and ever-present choice for a container, it can potentially degrade the quality of your tea. Therefore, storing tea in it for a long duration is not the best solution.

Vacuum sealed tea caddies: You can find vacuum-sealed tea caddies that pump out the oxygen from the container and seal the tea leaves within the container after every use. Though they are optimal for the storage of tea, they are also very expensive.

Its not just about the way you store your tea, but how you treat it, matters. It is always a better option to buy tea in smaller quantities so that they do not remain open for too long. Exposure to the polluted environment for longer durations can make tea acidic.

Is Black Tea Acidic Or Alkaline

How to Make Cinnamon Turmeric Tea to Flush Inflammation ...

Lets first tackle the main question what is black tea pH value?

Now, it should be noted that the exact number can vary from one cup to another.

This is because the pH value may be based on the kind of black tea, how strongly it was brewed, and even how much water was used.

On average, though, black tea has a pH value of around 4.9.

The acids found in black tea are oxalate and citrate.

Therefore, black tea is acidic, but very mildly so.

This means that black tea is perfectly safe for consumption for the average person.
