Abstract

Many animal experiments and clinical trials showed that probiotics are effective for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease. Alcohol disrupts the composition of intestinal flora; probiotics modulate the gut microbiota and reverse alcohol-associated intestinal barrier dysfunction by decreasing intestinal mucosal permeability and preventing intestinal bacteria from translocating. Probiotics enhance immune responses and reduce the levels of alcohol-induced inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species production in the liver and intestine. Probiotics also increase fatty acid -oxidation and reduce lipogenesis, combating alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge regarding the mechanism of action of probiotics for reducing the effects of alcoholic liver disease.

For this reason, we wouldn’t usually recommend swigging coffee or tea with your probiotics dose in the morning The particular probiotic used is a ‘spore-forming’ bacteria, which seemingly protects the cell’s genetic material from external pressures such as heat. More recently, probiotic coffees and teas containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG have been developed, but these are stored chilled or at room temperature2.

Is this going to be the new way to take probiotics? Do we think it’s a good idea? If youre popping a probiotic supplement, youre not alone- according to the BBC, we spend around £750 million on probiotics every year in the UK. This is quite the investment in beneficial live bacteria, particularly given the fact that said health-boosting microbes often require sensitive treatment, otherwise theyre unlikely to be beneficial, or um, alive. To minimise the risks of wasting your cash, or possibly taking probiotics when you shouldnt be, here are some probiotic pitfalls to be wary of.

How To Take Probiotic Supplements

Should I take probiotic supplements every day?

Be sure to review the instructions for recommended use prior to taking your supplement. Though this is often just a sentence or two, it provides information that can maximize the benefits and reduce the risk for side effects.

For example, the recommended use will typically detail the serving size and frequency of dosing. If a single serving of your supplement is 3 pills, but youre directed to take them twice daily, you should consume 6 pills each day.

Misinterpreting this information can lead to consuming too little, or too much of your supplement.

Keep in mind, this information can differ supplement to supplement. Also, directions for consuming pills will not be the same as those provided for powder probiotics.

We all know that probiotics help to decrease IBS symptoms.

Also, alcohol makes your gut more permeable to toxins in your colon, which in-turn enters your bloodstream and hurts your liver and other organs.
