Oral rehydration solutions can be used to:

  • keep children well hydrated when they have significant amounts of diarrhea.
  • replace lost fluids when children show signs of mild dehydration.

Oral rehydration solutions are available at pharmacies in ready-to-serve preparations. It is best to buy an ORS that has already been mixed.

How To Manage Your Toddlers Diarrhea

Managing your toddlers diarrhea is not as difficult as it may seem since the condition is more disruptive than dangerous. Mild diarrhea should not cause alarm as long as the child is acting normal, drinking and eating enough. Mild diarrhea normally clears up within a few days and toddlers recover completely with home care, plenty of fluids and rest.

Keep up the regular dietA child suffering from diarrhea who is not vomiting or dehydrated can continue to drink the usual fluids and eat ordinarily. Keeping up with the regular diet usually reduces the duration of the diarrhea episode while also offering proper nutrition.

Avoid giving medication unless when necessaryAntiviral and antibacterial drugs are not necessarily prescribed for diarrhea cases caused by bacteria or viruses as most toddlers recover on their own, however antibiotics are given in some instances to young children or those with compromised immune system to guard against bacterial infections from getting complicated.

FluidsFluids are critical for managing diarrhea in children. These prevent toddler from getting dehydrated which is a serious condition in young children and babies. Lost fluids should be replaced through drinking unless the child is highly dehydrated or is unable to keep fluids down. If the child is too dehydrated, it is recommended that they should get re-hydrated through IV rather than using the oral method.

Should I Feed My Child During Sickness

What Causes Baby Diarrhea?

Yes. Even though eating may cause the amount of diarrhea to increase, your child will be able to get some nutrients from the food. This may prevent your child from losing too much weight and help your child get better quicker.

  • Breast-fed babies. If you are breast-feeding, keep breast-feeding while you give ORS.

  • Formula-fed babies. If you have been giving your baby formula, some doctors suggest switching from formula to ORS for up to 12 to 24 hours and then switching back to giving formula. Talk to your doctor about what to do.

  • Children on food. Children should begin eating within about 12 to 24 hours after starting to take ORS. Avoid foods with a lot of sugar and fat, such as ice cream, gelatin, pudding and fried foods.

If your child has had diarrhea, dairy products are best avoided for three to seven days. Sometimes bland foods are recommended for the first 24 hours. Foods that are bland include bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and unsweetened cereals. If these foods don’t bother your child, other foods can be added over the next 48 hours. Most children can return to normal eating habits in about three days after the vomiting and diarrhea stop.

But you can also make changes to your childs diet and seek help from your pediatrician to determine the cause of your childs diarrhea.

    Treating Symptoms In Infants

  • 1Nurse your baby often. One of the larger concerns of infants who have diarrhea is dehydration. Nursing your baby more often than usual will supply them with the fluids, calories, and nutrients they will need to get healthy and stay hydrated.XResearch source
  • Offer each breast to your baby for at least one to two minutes every ten to fifteen minutes until symptoms have reduced, or, if you arent breast feeding, use formula and a bottle.XResearch source
  • 2Increase the amount of bottle feedings if you use formula. Increase the amount of bottle feedings to make up for lost nutrients and liquids in both newborns and infants. The amount of nutritional supplementation a baby might need depends on their size and age, for example, 1 fl oz. for newborns and 3 fl oz. for 12-month olds at each extra feeding.XResearch source
  • If you are uncertain of the extra amount your baby needs consult your healthcare professional.
  • 3Feed them familiar semi-solid foods. Introduce semi-solid foods back into your childs diet if they have eaten them in the past. Foods like mashed bananas or potatoes are high in nutrients and can help resupply infants who have diarrhea.XResearch source

  • Dietary Changes That Help Reduce Symptoms

How to Stop Diarrhea in Kids Fast

Certain dietary changes have been found to reduce the frequency and severity of the toddler diarrhea symptoms. There are four things to remember the 4 Fs, fruit juice, fluid, fat, and fiber.

  • Fruit Juice: Reduce the amount of fruit juice and fruit squash that your toddler drinks as the sugars in these drinks seem to adversely affect some children. Clear apple juice has been found to be a particular problem in these cases, although cloudy is not as bad as it does contain some fiber. Try to offer water as an everyday drink and only offer juice as an occasional treat. If your child is used to drinking lots of juice and finds the transition difficult, then withdraw the juice gradually by progressively diluting it. Avoid other foods with high levels of fructose.Drinking lots of fruit juices has also found to be a problem for another reason. Some children have a reduced appetite for solid food, as much of their calorie requirement is being met by the sugars in juices. They are not eating enough of the high fat food and fiber than can help reduce symptoms.
  • Fluid: Fluids can be important for another reason. If children are drinking excessively this can blunt their appetite but can also give your toddler loose stools. We are told as parents to give our children extra fluid if they have diarrhea but with this type of chronic non-specific diarrhea this can actually make the situation worse! It is important to achieve a happy balance. Not too much but not too little. See Fluid Chart.

Maintaining Hydration In Toddlers With Diarrhea

When diarrhea hits, encourage your child to consume fluids, and give them a hydrating drink.

If your child is still breastfed, we encourage on-demand breastfeeding.

Importantly, there is no need to give juice, special formula, or diluted formula.

Stick to what your child has been drinking, or offer a rehydration solution you can buy at the drug store.

As soon as your child has diarrhea, offer plenty of fluid.
