Nausea, Diarrhea Are Symptoms Of COVID-19 For Some Patients

The symptoms of the Delta variant appear to be the same as the original version of COVID-19. However, physicians are seeing people getting sicker quicker, especially for younger people.;Recent research found that the Delta variant grows more rapidly; and to much greater levels in the respiratory tract.

Typically, vaccinated people are either asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms if they contract the Delta variant. Their symptoms are more like those of a common cold, such as cough, fever or headache, with the addition of significant loss of smell.

COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. Usual symptoms are fever, sore throat and difficulty in breathing. Some of the newer symptoms of this viral disease are muscle ache, rashes, gastrointestinal disorders and blood clotting. These are some of the general signs of the disease. But in children, signs of infection may be somewhat different. Many experts are now saying that many kids without fever or sore throat may also carry the virus. It may manifest in different ways like rashes on toes, body ache and even an upset tummy.

Covid-19, as we all know, has led to a global health crisis. It has spread at an alarming rate and is today present in almost all corners of the globe. To help contain the spread of the disease, it is essential to first know how to recognize the symptoms that indicate infection. Only then can you truly take remedial measures. Children were earlier seen as asymptomatic carriers. But now the view is slowly changing. Children too have symptoms. But these symptoms may be different from the ones we are used to seeing in most COVID-19 patients.

Loss Of Taste Or Smell

On the CDCs list of common COVID-19 symptoms, one stands out. In addition to fever, chills and a sore throat, the public health agency recognizes new loss of taste or smell as evidence of a coronavirus infection.; ;

People who have colds, if they get a really stuffy nose, they may complain of lack of smell, but, you know, thats sort of an unusual right now in the absence of COVID, UCSFs Winston says. But it may be one of the best indicators of a coronavirus infection.

A study published in the journal Nature Medicine tracked more than 2.5 million participants who reported their potential symptoms of COVID-19 on a smartphone app. About 65 percent of people who tested positive for COVID-19 reported loss of taste and smell, making it one of the strongest predictors of the illness among those studied. Similarly, researchers from the University of California, San Diego, found that smell and taste loss were reported in 68 and 71 percent of COVID-19positive subjects, respectively.

Gi Symptoms May Signal Milder Covid

Gastrointestinal symptoms may be more common in COVID
  • GI symptoms occur in 10% of COVID-19 patients.
  • An imbalance of gut bacteria is what triggers these GI manifestations.
  • To maintain proper gut health, its important to eat low-acid foods and hydrate with electrolytes.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19 can take root in the digestive tract and trigger gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, mounting evidence shows, though this may be indicative of a more mild infection.;

These symptoms, which occur in about 10% of COVID-19 patients, tend to appear later and last longer, leaving physical imprints across the digestive system in the form of fissures, polyps, hemorrhoids, and more.

Can People Who Have The Covid

Typically, vaccinated people who test positive for COVID-19 are either asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms. It rarely results in hospitalization or death. Their symptoms are more like those of a common cold, such as cough, fever or headache, with the addition of significant loss of smell.

As of July 22, there were 65,000 breakthrough cases among the 160 million people who are fully vaccinated. That’s 0.04% of vaccinated people reporting breakthrough cases. No vaccine is 100% effective. With the COVID-19 vaccines averaging about 90% efficacy, health experts expect about 10% of those vaccinated could be infected.

Nationally, 97% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, as of July 22.

When To Seek Emergency Medical Attention

Look for emergency warning signs* for COVID-19. If someone is showing any of these signs,;seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to wake or stay awake
  • Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone

What You Should Do

If you have diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, it doesnt mean that you have COVID-19. But its wise to pay extra attention to your symptoms during this pandemic, especially if you have a health condition that raises your chances for an infection or if you live in an area where the new coronavirus is widespread.

Stay home. Most people who test positive for the coronavirus get mildly sick and get better without treatment. Avoid going out unless you must, such as for urgent medical visits.

Have a sick bedroom and bathroom. If you can, use a separate bathroom for yourself if you live with others to prevent spreading illness through your poop.

Wash your hands often. Soap and water for at least 20 seconds is best, especially after you use the bathroom, blow your nose, or sneeze, and before eating or cooking. Next best is a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly. This includes the toilet seat and flush handle, bathroom doorknobs, phones, counters, and other things you touch often.

Drink lots offluids. If you have diarrhea or are vomiting, its important to replace the lost fluids. An oral rehydration solution from the drugstore is best because it has salt and sugar that your body loses in diarrhea. Or you can sip watered-down fruit juices or soft drinks, along with salted crackers and broths.

Diarrhea Nausea Vomiting And Severe Appetite Loss

Diarrhea and vomiting are new signs of Covid-19 – DG Amoth

COVID-19 is producing symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and appetite loss in a number of patients young and old. A study out of Stanford University School of Medicine found that nearly one-third of 116 patients infected with the coronavirus reported mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Earlier reports showed that among roughly 200 patients in China, more than half experienced diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also acknowledged GI issues on its list of COVID-19 warning signs.

Theres no question at this point that GI symptoms can be a manifestation of COVID-19, says William Chey, M.D., professor of gastroenterology and nutrition sciences at the University of Michigan. And oftentimes these symptoms can come on even in the absence of the more typical and recognized markers of a coronavirus infection, such as fever and cough, he adds.

Experts point to a few explanations for the tummy trouble. Chey says the virus can directly infect the cells that line the GI tract, which is why some patients can test positive for the virus with a stool sample, even if results from a nasal swab come back negative. GI issues could also be an indirect result of the bodys fight against infection.

If you dont have a history of GI trouble and experience a sudden onset of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite with or without other COVID-19 symptoms check in with your doctor. Your symptoms might warrant a coronavirus test.

Do Vaccines Work Against Delta Variant

Per The Wall Street Journal, data suggests that vaccines are still working well. A study from the United Kingdom, for example, found that vaccines have been preventing severe illness from the delta variant so far.

  • The vaccines are as good as first heralded, even against new variants, The Wall Street Journal reports. That unvaccinated people are still being hospitalized underscores the continuing need to get as many people vaccinated as possible.

When Does Diarrhoea Happen In Covid

Diarrhoea is an early sign of COVID-19, starting on the first day of infection and building in intensity during the first week. It usually lasts for an average of two to three days, but can last up to seven days in adults.

Some people can suffer from ongoing bouts of COVID-related diarrhoea, and these are commonly reported in people with long COVID or post-COVID syndrome.

Other Causes Of Diarrhea

COVID

Of course, diarrhea can be related to many other conditions aside from COVID-19 and the flu. Unexpected diarrhea can be a result of a change in medication, food that has expired or that youre intolerant to, heavy exertion or exercises like running, and a variety of other scenarios. If youre experiencing diarrhea without any other symptoms, then theres a good chance that it is not due to COVID-19. However, this doesnt mean that you should ignore your bowel issues. Diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration, so its important that you take the right precautions and rehydrate. Water is a good way to replace fluids, but it doesnt contain salts and electrolytesminerals such as sodium and potassiumthat are essential for your body to rehydrate and function. Because of this, you should also try to consume beverages like fruit juices and sports drinks for potassium or broths for sodium. Since many fruit juices and sports drinks contain large amounts of sugar, you can consider mixing them with water. Make sure to contact your primary care physician before adjusting your diet while experiencing GI symptoms; certain fruit juices, such as apple juice, can make diarrhea worse.

What Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Covid

Fever and cough are the most common COVID-19 symptoms in children, according to the CDC. “The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar in adults and children and can look like other common illnesses, like colds, strep throat, or allergies,” the CDC reports. In addition to the COVID-19 symptoms listed above, children may also experience stomachache, poor appetite or poor feeding, especially for babies under 1 year old. In some children, fever may be the only sign of COVID-19 infection.

Headaches Dizziness And Confusion

Beyond loss of taste and smell, doctors are noting a growing list of neurological effects in COVID-19 patients. Other indicators of the illness include dizziness, headache and confusion.

In fact, a study in JAMA Neurology found that more than 36 percent of 214 patients in Wuhan, China, experienced neurological symptoms during their bout of COVID-19. More recent research published in Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology found that neurological manifestations headaches, dizziness, confusion, etc. were present in 42 percent of patients at the onset of COVID-19 symptoms and in 82 percent of patients at any time during the disease course.

For older adults, in particular, these neurological effects can be just as devastating as the pulmonary impacts of a coronavirus infection, says XinQi Dong, M.D., director of the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. They can also be easily overlooked or dismissed as dementia or other diseases common with aging.

Were trying to be very vigilant and broad in our thinking when a patient comes into the emergency room with confusion or change in mental status,;say Neal Sikka, M.D., an associate professor of emergency medicine at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. That could be some other type of infection; it definitely could also be a presentation of COVID. And so we are trying to do rapid testing on those patients to identify them early.

What Symptoms Are Likely To Show Up First To Indicate Covid

The earliest symptoms of novel coronavirus will most likely be a fever, followed by a cough and muscle pain, according to a study conducted by the University of Southern California. Next, infected people will possibly experience nausea or vomiting and diarrhea. Initial COVID-19 symptoms are similar to other respiratory illnesses such as MERS and SARS. However, patients with COVID-19 will likely develop nausea and vomiting before diarrhea, which is opposite from MERS and SARS, the USC researchers said.

If someone is showing these symptoms, you should seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • trouble breathing
  • persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • new confusion
  • inability to wake or stay awake
  • bluish lips or face

This is not a complete list of possibly symptoms. Call your primary care provider for any other symptoms that seem severe or are a concern to you.

Upper respiratory allergy symptoms typically include:

  • runny nose
  • itchy eyes
  • sneezing

If these continue after exposure to something that usually triggers an allergy, or during the usual time of year you experience seasonal allergies, then its reasonable to attribute these symptoms to allergies rather than infection. But if there are other associated symptoms such as fever or cough or they are occurring without the usual suspected allergy exposures then these could be signs of COVID-19 infection.

What Other Symptoms Of Covid

Doctors worried by new symptoms exhibited by COVID-19 patients

Diarrhoea is most likely to occur alongside other symptoms. Which symptoms these are depends on age and whether you have a localised COVID-19 affecting mostly your gastrointestinal system or an infection that affects more of your body.

In adults, most of the time diarrhoea comes alongside fatigue and headaches. In addition, adults tend to experience diarrhoea with loss of smell , and it is reasonably common alongside a sore throat and skipping meals. In children, diarrhoea tends to occur with fatigue and headaches and sometimes with abdominal pain, a sore throat and anosmia.

Diarrhoea has also been associated with a greater risk of needing hospital support, particularly among people also reporting abdominal pain and unusual muscle pain.

How Common Is Diarrhoea In Covid

Diarrhoea isnât a very common symptom of COVID-19 but the likelihood of having it increases with age. 10% of children, 21% of adults aged 16-35 and around 30% of adults aged over 35 experience diarrhoea during their illness.

Only 2% of people who were ill with COVID-19 reported diarrhoea as their only symptom.
