Irritable bowel syndrome is a common gut disorder that will affect up to one in five people in the UK at some stage in their life. Symptoms can vary, from abdominal pain and bloating to bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation. There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms can often be eased with treatment.
We asked GP Dr Dawn Harper what she would want to know if she was diagnosed with IBS.
Is my diet causing my IBS?Keep a food diary. Writing down everything you eat and when symptoms flare up can be enlightening. Dairy products and wheat are common triggers of IBS, but beware of excluding these foods permanently. Cut them out in the short term and continue your symptom diary. If your symptoms disappear, these foods may have been responsible.
Remember, stress and routine can play a significant role in IBS, so re-challenge your system a few weeks later to see if the symptoms recur. If youre considering eliminating a food group from your diet long term, speak to a dietitian about how to replace the lost nutrients.
What other factors can affect my condition?Eat regularly. Missing meals then binging will make your symptoms worse. Try to sit down to eat. Eating on the move isnt good for your digestive system.
How can I manage my stress levels?This may be easier said than done, but try making a note of stressful situations that trigger your IBS. You wont be able to avoid some stresses, but putting them down on paper may help you to identify the ones you can do something about.

So even if youre not full-on intolerant, your bodys levels of lactase may be lower than it used to be, making dairy a problem food. Someone who is very lactose intolerant experience bloating, cramps, and flatulence as soon as they ingest milk or other dairy products. But your level of gassiness will vary depending on how sensitive you are.
For some people, certain carbs can cause gas, Dr. Balzora adds. If it seems that youre sensitive to carbs, your doctor may suggest following a low FODMAP diet. The acronym stands for Fermentable Oligo-Di-Monosaccharides and Polyolswhich, in English, are specific types of sugars that may be difficult to digest and then left in the digestive tract for bacteria to feed on. If having gas is interfering with your daily life, Ill prescribe this for six-to-eight-weeks, and then foods back into the diet slowly.
The best way to combat gas related to a food sensitivity is to pay attention to your body, possibly with the guidance of a medical professional. Your doctor will probably ask you to start keeping a food diary to help find patterns between what youre eating and what youre feeling. This way, you can take note of what foods might be causing issues for you so you can decide whether you want to eat them only once in a while or avoid them altogether.
What Helps With Diarrhea
Over-the-counter medications such as Pepto-Bismol and Imodium are generally safe for treating diarrhea, Dr. Deutsch says. The only time you dont want to take them is if you have a GI infection, she adds. And people should also know that Pepto-Bismol can make your stool turn black, which makes some worry that they are bleeding. But this is normal. Whats concerning is blood.
If you can, consider riding out the diarrhea before using an over-the-counter medication, as too much medication can then lead to constipation, Dr. Deutsch points out. Or if you do take a medication, you may just want to take one pill or one dose first, and give it a little time to work, she says.
Diet is also key when dealing with diarrhea. If its a vicious stomach bug, we recommend the BRAT diet of bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast. You want bland things that will help firm up the stool, Dr. Deutsch says.
To avoid diarrhea in general, Dr. Deutsch recommends foods with insoluble fiber, which acts like a sponge and draws water out of your stool. Look for foods with whole wheat flour, wheat bran, and things like beans, nuts, cauliflower, and potatoes.
If you need a supplement, Benefiber works well because it absorbs water from the intestines to form softer, bulkier stool, Dr. Deutsch says.

- Some gut bacteria have a greater ability to produce excessive gas
- Maldigestion or malabsorption of polysaccharides and sugars seen in people with chronic pancreatitis, celiac disease, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
