Try Peppermint Oil To Help With Gas And Bloating

Over-the-Counter Enzyme Supplements Explained: Mayo Clinic Physician Explains Pros, Cons

Peppermint oil has been used as an herbal remedy for a number of ailments for centuries. Now the ACG acknowledges that this herb soothes the gut and recommends it to provide relief for all IBS symptoms. A recent meta-analysis published in January 2019 in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies looked at 12 different trials from three different continents, and found that regularly taking a peppermint oil capsule with meals helped reduce IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and constipation.

Its worth noting that peppermint oil could make heartburn worse so be careful how much you take. Talk to your doctor if you are thinking about trying peppermint oil, since IBS is a complicated condition and shell need a complete picture of the remedies youre using to determine an overall treatment plan.

What Ibs Symptoms Can Be Treated With Medication

There are multiple ways to treat IBS, but the goal of treatment is to focus on relieving what symptoms you are experiencing. Typically, the symptoms that can be treated with medication include abdominal pain and abnormal stool consistency .

Initial treatment may include dietary changes or other non-medicinal options . However, healthcare providers may also choose to start with medications to help relieve symptoms.

The current guidelines from the American College of Gastroenterology list no specific order in which treatments should be tried. Healthcare providers are encouraged to personalize their recommendations based on how the person is feeling and their medical history.

Medications Specifically For Ibs

Alosetron : For a long time, this was the only prescription medication approved to treat the condition. It works by blocking messages from the gut to the brain and can help relieve stomach pain and slow your bowels to relieve diarrhea.

But there can be serious side effects, so itâs only to be used by women with severe IBS-D whose symptoms arenât helped by other treatments.

A similar drug called ramosetron is being studied. It may have fewer side effects, but more research is needed.

Eluxadoline : This signals your nervous system to help stop bowel spasms. It can also ease belly cramps and diarrhea. You take it twice a day with food. It works best if you take it regularly for as long as your doctor feels is needed.

Rifaximin : Though itâs not clear what causes IBS-D, some experts believe the culprit may be too much bacteria in the small intestine. Rifaximin is an antibiotic that changes the amount of bacteria in your intestines. It was approved by the FDA in 2015 to treat IBS-D. It can help with both stomach pain and diarrhea. You take pills for 2 weeks. It can control symptoms for as long as 6 months. If they come back, you can be treated again.

Remember to follow your doctorâs instructions exactly when taking any medication for your IBS-D.

Zegerid Otc Capsules 42

Its combination of effectiveness, affordability, and accessibility has made Zegrid OTC Capsules one of the best heartburn medicine options available today. Using omeprazole as its main active ingredient, this medication works to eliminate both acute ongoing heartburn cases and chronic acid reflux situations.

What many users truly appreciate about this product is the fact that it offers 24-hour relief against heartburn. This is particularly ideal because a person may experience heartburn again later in the day if they have an episode earlier in the morning.

If you have acid reflux, this product may also be a good choice. Offering 24-hour results and relief, you can take one tablet in the morning to prevent frequent heartburn. This works much better for those with chronic acid reflux problems because it eliminates the need to take one pill before each meal.

While its not the cheapest option on the market, Zegrid is the best heartburn medication because a single dose can provide relief and prevention for a whole day. This is what makes it both the best acid reflux medicine and an ideal solution for acute heartburn all in one.

What Triggers Ibs Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome affects each individual differently. The underlying cause of the condition is unknown, though factors thought to play a role include abnormal muscle contractions in the intestines, nervous system abnormalities, viral or bacterial infections, childhood stress, and changes to the microbes in the digestive system. Women under the age of 50 and individuals with a family history of digestive disorders may have a higher risk for developing IBS.

While the role food allergies play in causing or triggering IBS isnt fully understood, most people with the condition are able to identify certain foods that seem to make their symptoms worse. Wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, beans, and carbonated beverages are common triggers. Many people also experience worsening symptoms during periods of heightened stress.

Silicol Gel For Heartburn And Indigestion

Age Old Remedy Could Spell Relief For IBS

Silicol gel contains silicic acid which, despite its name is a bland, non-acidic, mineral substance containing silicon and oxygen in a colloidal, hydrated form. Just a small amount of this dispersible gel creates a protective lining in the stomach and intestine. The gel acts as a magnet physically binding with substances which cause inflammation, and renders them harmless to pass through the digestive tract. It also provides a physical barrier to soothe heartburn and indigestion.

Otc Medications For Diarrhea

Finding the right medication for treating diarrhea is often a matter of urgency. Targeted medications for diarrhea will rarely help with overall symptoms of IBS, but they can certainly help the immediate problem.

  • Loperamide Commonly sold under the brand name Imodium, Loperamide is a popular OTC medication for short-term relief from diarrhea. Loperamide can have side effects such as constipation, cramps and dizziness, and should not be taken regularly without discussing with your doctor. Although it can help ease diarrhea, it will not help with other IBS symptoms like pain and bloating.
  • Calcium Calcium is a traditional choice for treating diarrhea, and it does have a constipating effect. It should only be taken in the short-term, as it is possible to take too much. Calcium carbonate isnt widely recommended by doctors, but many IBS sufferers have found it helpful. It may also settle the stomach if you have indigestion .
  • Bismuth Bismuth subsalicylate, often sold as Pepto-Bismol, is an antidiarrheal medication. A popular method for self-treatment, it does little to relieve any other symptoms of IBS.

Its important to be careful when taking diarrhea medication, and to only use it in the short term. Overuse can lead to constipation.

OTC medications for diarrhea can stop or ease diarrhea in the short term. However, they cant help with other IBS issues, such as stomach pain.

What If I Forget To Take It

Thanks Alflorex

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until it’s nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time.

Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one.

If you often forget doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to remember to take your medicines.

What Are The Different Types Of Ibs

IBS symptoms can be similar to other GI conditions, ranging from a bad case of food poisoning to inflammatory bowel conditions like ulcerative colitis. For this reason, your healthcare provider may perform a physical exam or some blood tests to make sure you have IBS.

Typically, you have to experience GI symptoms including pain, a change in bowel habits, and a change in your stools appearance for at least 6 months before a healthcare provider can determine you have IBS. Your provider may ask you to keep a log when you go to the bathroom, including details of your stools appearance. This can help them determine what type of IBS you have.

Based on your symptoms, your provider may tell you you have one of the four subtypes of IBS:

  • IBS-Constipation : You primarily have hard stools more than a quarter of the time.

  • IBS-Diarrhea : You primarily have loose stools more than a quarter of the time.

  • IBS-Mixed : You have both stools that are extremely loose or solid more than a quarter of the time each thats abnormal stools at least half of the time you go.

  • IBS-Undefined : You have bowel movements that dont follow a pattern listed above. This category is less common.

IBS-C and IBS-D are the most well-known subtypes of this condition. As such, we will discuss these in detail below. However, healthcare providers often prescribe many of the medications discussed here for IBS-M and IBS-U as well.

Try Meditation Or Deep Breathing Exercises

Though stress is not a cause for IBS, periods of heightened stress can increase your risk for flare-ups and may make your symptoms worse. When youre experiencing IBS flare-ups, it may help to calm your mind and body with some meditation or deep breathing exercises. Pain tends to trigger anxiety, so making an effort to calm yourself down may help ease your pain. You can find meditation guides online as well as videos or recordings to walk you through some deep breathing exercises.

Yoga Brings Ibs Symptom Relief

While mindfulness may reduce symptoms, physical activity is an integral part of the mind-body connection. One of the most effective ways to pair mindfulness and exercise is through the ancient practice of yoga. And, studies suggest it can be helpful in managing IBS, but the quality of the data is limited.

A review published in December 2019 in the journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences analyzed several studies that looked at the benefits of various yoga practices focused on the mind-body-breath connection. It found that a majority of participants saw improvements in their IBS symptoms, their digestion, and their physical health, as well as improvements in mood, anxiety, and their outlook on life. The results suggest that practicing yoga can lead to improvements in physical health and a more positive outlook on life, which helps decrease IBS symptoms.

Choosing Otc Medications For Digestive Health

Buy IBgard® for The Dietary Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS ...

There is no one size fits all OTC medication for IBS. Irritable bowel syndrome is tricky, because we dont yet fully understand the cause. Treating IBS, unfortunately, isnt as simple as taking a single medication.

That doesnt mean there arent medications that can help to improve digestive health overall. These OTC medications wont always target a specific symptom. Instead, they work to improve the overall health of the digestive tract.

OTC medications for improving digestive health come in several forms, and in many cases research is ongoing. The most popular options are:

These medications may be able to provide some relief, but they work best as only a part of an overall treatment plan. Any OTC treatment for improving digestive health must be combined with a healthy diet, and frequent exercise. Peppermint oil and probiotics are a good starting place.

Some products can help relieve digestive distress regardless of whether your primary symptom is diarrhea or constipation. Some of them may aid gut motility, improve the bacterial balance in your digestive tract, or soothe hypersensitive or inflamed gut walls.

Popular OTC treatments include:

  • Herbal remedies: Peppermint oil, aloe vera, and slippery elm are among the top choices.
  • Probiotics: “Friendly” bacteria may balance out “unfriendly” bacteria, reducing pain and severity of symptoms.
  • Digestive enzymes: Beta-glucan fiber and inositol supplements may significantly reduce abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence.
  • Vitamin D: A deficiency may be linked to IBS symptoms in some people.

Of these, in its 2021 guidelines, the American College of Gastroenterology only recommends peppermint oil and probiotics for treating IBS symptoms.
