Mean, Standard Deviation & Variance [IB Math AA SL/HL]

What are all the International Baccalaureate courses available to take? Here, we give you the complete list of all Standard Level and Higher Level IB classes.

Every IB school is different, so your own school might not offer all the IB courses below. However, these are all the classes the IB has created a curriculum and test for. There are in total 57 classes . I have categorized them by the categories that the IB defines as the six subject groups.

Here’s a you can use to jump to the different subject groups:

To receive your IB Diploma, you must take classes from all six categories. Note that you may study an additional science, individuals and societies, or languages course instead of an arts course. You must also complete what is known as the core, which includes an additional class called Theory of Knowledge .

I’ll dive into more detail on each below.

What Does Ib Mean On Tiktok

Often, when you see ib in the caption of a TikTok video, its followed by someones username not the person whose video youre watching. In that case, theres a simple explanation for what it means. Basically, ib stands for inspired by.

People tend to use ib as a way to give credit for a certain dance or trend when it has inspired them to make their own video. Its similar to when people use dc to give dance credit when uploading a video of them performing a TikTok dance that was developed by someone else. It definitely seems like dc is more popular for dance videos, but you do see plenty of uses of ib as well.

Castle on the Hill – Throttle Remix – Ed Sheeran

There arent any official rules about crediting the accounts that inspire you in your TikTok caption, but it is nice to give a shout-out to the original creators. Its also definitely not a good look to pretend that an idea was 100 percent your own if it was heavily inspired by someone else .

All that being said, theres another meaning for ib on TikTok .

Why Did The Ib Mathematics Curriculum Change

The IB review and improve subject curriculums every 7 years to ensure students are equipped with skills desirable to Universities & future employers. Critical thinking & problem solving, especially with the use of technology, has become an increasingly valued skill in this complex & technologically dependent world. The IB has incorporated more of this with the addition of the AI route. The curriculum change also provides a wider choice of mathematics pathways for students as well as enabling schools with more flexibility in how they group students, schedule classes and teach the content.

AP Program

AP calculus examinations are designed by a development committee comprised of high school teachers and university faculty in consultation with statisticians and psychometricians who attempt to create examinations that meet accepted standards for technical quality . The development process incorporates the judgments of both disciplinary and psychometric experts. The AP calculus examinations are timed, with about 50 percent of the total time devoted to multiple-choice questions and the rest to free-response problem-solving questions.19 The development committees are responsible for deciding the general content of the examination and the ability level to be tested.

Content specifications for AP calculus examinations are determined at the same time as the topic outlines for the courses are developed. Examinations are constructed using the topic

These percentages do not necessarily reflect the weighting of scores as a final examination grade is determined.

The final required course for the IB Diploma Programme is called Theory of Knowledge . In this course, “students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.” Students are assessed in TOK through an oral presentation and a 1,600-word essay. You must complete this course to receive your diploma and may take it online.

I know the course sounds very vague, but this was actually one of my favorites in high school. It was a mix of philosophy and personal evaluation and allowed me to reflect on the issues that were most important to me.

The IBO has released guides outlining the details of the syllabi for the two courses, so get your hands on them! Of course, there will be sections of the document you may not understand thoroughly, but there is the World Wide Web just waiting for your google search.

Generally speaking, the Analysis and Approaches course provides a very classical approach to mathematics. If you are eager to dive into the world of abstract theories and are keen on learning about the various types of proofs and methods we use to reach generalizations about the world around us then AA is the course for you.

In comparison, the Applications and Interpretation course provides a very different perspective on some of the same problems and concepts that are explored in the AA syllabus. If you enjoy maths but would like to see the practical applications of mathematics in the world of finance and the natural sciences amongst others then AI is a better fit for you. If modeling brings you thrills in maths, then AI is for you.

Still not sure? Katherine Johnson once said, like what you do, and then youll do your best. She loved maths enough that she took on segregated American and won, becoming one of the first black female mathematicians to work for NASA who developed the Apollo mission.

AA or AI: if you like the syllabus, chances are youre going to enjoy doing the work needed for that ultimate 7!

What Is Ib Math

The International Baccalaureate curriculum consists of six subject groups. Group five, mathematics, is made up of four different math courses. To earn an IB diploma, a person must pass at least one of the following three math courses: Mathematical Studies Standard Level, Mathematics Standard Level or Mathematics Higher Level. The fourth course, which is not required, is Further Mathematics Higher Level.

Mathematical Studies Standard Level is designed to build confidence in students and encourage them to appreciate math. This course is for students who do not expect math to play a major part in their university studies. Its curriculum includes numbers and algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and financial math, as well as a few other topics.

Mathematics Standard Level, on the other hand, is intended mainly for students who are preparing for future studies in chemistry, economics and business. Similarly to Mathematical Studies Standard Level, students will study algebra, trigonometry and statistics. These and a few other areas of study form the common Core curriculum for both Mathematics Standard and Higher Level with the Standard Level curriculum being a subset of the Higher Level curriculum.

No matter which course youre planning to take, you dont have to do it all by yourself.

Ib Vs Ap: What’s Different

IB Math HL

Although both programs offer challenging courses for high school students, there are a lot of differences in how they do so.

Popularity

Advanced Placement is by far the more popular program. In 2019, 2.8 million students took AP tests.

By contrast, only about 166,000 students took IB exams in May 2019. The Diploma pass rate was 77.81%. Some families opt for the IB program over the AP program as it’s rarer and can help set students apart in the admission process.

Diploma

IB was designed as a diploma program . Meanwhile, the AP program was designed around advanced classesnot a diploma.

Class Curricula

IB curricula are stricter for teachers. IB has certain required assignments your teacher has to grade, such as oral presentations, as part of the internal assessment. In contrast, AP teachers have a bit more freedom in how they may teach an AP course, just so long as they’re effectively preparing students for the exam.

Difficulty

IB Higher Level courses are often considered more difficult than APs, whereas IB Standard Level courses are considered the same as or easier than APs. Keep in mind that how difficult a class is to pass at your school will vary depending on the teacher and their curriculum.

Exam Content

IB exams contain more writing and application of ideas, whereas APs are more about proving what you know. This is why AP exams have more multiple choice, while the IB exams feature more short-response questions, essays, and case studies.

What Can I Choose

You can choose between Maths: Analysis and Approaches and Maths: Applications and Interpretation. Both subjects will be offered at SL and HL. The SL maths courses mean 150 hours of classes, whilst a HL maths course is taught over 240 hours . Knowing the amount of time you’ll be spending on a subject is a good way to decide which level to take. Think to yourself: do I really want to have 240 hours of maths, or am I more suited to 150 hours? But what differentiates the two courses is how they approach mathematics. Heres a quick break down of the two subjects:

Mathematics: analysis and approaches

  • Develop strong skills in mathematical thinking
  • Real and abstract mathematical problem solving
  • For students interested in mathematics, engineering physical sciences, and some economics

Mathematics: applications and interpretation

  • Emphasis on modelling and statistics
  • Develops strong skills in applying mathematics to the real-world
  • Real mathematical problem solving using technology
  • For students interested in social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, statistics, business, engineering, some economics, psychology and design

Core Curriculum For Mathematics Sl And Hl

Mathematics SL is primarily intended for students who “expect to need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in subjects such as chemistry and business management,” and its curriculum is a small subset of the Mathematics HL curriculum. Students pursuing an engineering-based degree typically opt for Mathematics HL. Topics from the following areas form the common “Core curriculum” for both courses:

In Mathematics SL, students are provided a minimum of 140 instructional hours on the topics from the Core.

Questions About Ib Math Heres How We Can Help

Senior Development Manager Marie Vivas shares a variety of resources on the new math courses and provides a recognition update.

We have spent a lot of time in the past few months preparing for the new IB Math courses. In fact, with schools starting, our Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme educators are doing first teaching of these new courses even as we speak! Plus, our university colleagues are answering questions on the road and working with their institutions on adjusting their admissions and credit policies, gearing up for Fall 2021, when they will welcome the first cohort of Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation .

As part of our work in IB recognition, we have done a lot of outreach to schools and universities and shared a variety of resources with different stakeholders. For universities, we have provided Subject Guides and short explanations of the new courses. For schools, we created a best fit guide and collaborated with International ACAC on a free webinar. And in the past few weeks, we published the official AA and AI Subject Briefs on our website! By the way, I just learned that is what the cool kids are calling the new courses.

And last but certainly not least, heres a summary of the overall IB Maths recognition trends in our three regions:

How We Can Help

To help students who are going to the first year of IB get prepared for the upcoming syllabus changes as well as stay ahead of their in-school instruction, The Edge will run a course to cover the common core topics under the new IB Math curriculum. View the IB Math Common Core CourseDetails and Schedule.

The New Study Structure

There are specific topics that are required for both Math AA and Math AI. These topics fall under the core concepts and will be covered in the first 60 hours of the course. These core topic include basic mathematical concepts. It should also be noted that apart from the core topics, there are certain concepts which are taught in both the branches of Maths offered by IB. However, the way these concepts are approached depending on whether you have opted for Math AA or Math AI. In other words, the common topics will be approached via a theoretical lens if a student is studying it as an AA topic. The same topic will be taught with an ‘implementation’ mindset if it is being studied in an AI class.

Below is a Venn diagram that helps you visualize the course structure. If you are uncertain about your bachelor’s degree, then we recommend you taking Math AA SL initially and then switching to either a level higher or drop down a level . Regardless of what you decide to do, you will not have to cover up a lot of study material if you switch within the first 60 hours of the course. Choosing the Standard Level in either of the offered modules will have you dedicate 150 hours towards the subject whereas opting for Higher Level requires you to spend 240 hours on the subject. If the students opt for Standard level for either of the modules, they would have to take two written exams whereas taking the higher level of Math AA or Math AI requires students to take three written papers.
