Limit All Cow Milk Based Dairy
So there are 2 reasons to consider avoiding this bad boy of gastrointestinal health.
For starters, cows milk comes packed with lactose. This is the milk sugar that the majority of us struggle to digest23. It is a high FODMAP ingredient too. So if youre on a low FODMAP diet, it is out as well.
Secondly and less importantly normal cows milk also comes with another potentially troublesome sidekicka protein called A1 Casein24. It often does not play well with our guts, especially in the early healing phases.
In response to both issues above you can consider lactose free milk, but then you have the casein problem, or you can consider A2 Casein milk, but then you still have the lactose problem.
All a bit confusing I know. So my approach in the first 30 days of a gut healing diet is simply no cows milk dairy, eg milk, milk chocolate, ice cream, cheese etc.
Some Cooking Notes For This Recipe
- Make sure to run your fermenting jar through the dishwasher before using it a hot wash will help remove any bacteria that could interfere with the fermentation.
- For starter culture, you can use a vegetable or dairy based one. I tend to personally opt for the former. Each sachet will likely have a couple of grams of culture. And come with instructions on how to prep it, before adding it to the jar.
- Your kraut can be stored for more than the 2 week period mentioned in the graphic. In fact, unopened, you could keep it for 6-9 months easily.
- But once you open your kraut, keep it in the fridge, and for max 2 months.
P.S. If you ever get sick of eating fermented vegetables then consider a probiotic supplement and of course, just be thankful you dont have to resort to a fecal transplant to restore your gut flora!
Identify The Foods You Should Avoid:
While you take the time to consume the right kind of food, it is equally important to avoid eating certain foods to improve your gut health. Some foods come with higher possibilities of causing inflammation in the body. Such foods can also negatively affect healthy bacteria while promoting the growth of unhealthy gut bacteria responsible for many chronic health conditions. In order to ensure that this does not happen, it is vital to avoid consuming excess junk food, foods containing artificial sweeteners, refined oils, sugary beverages, processed food, and alcohol. All these foods can harm healthy gut bacteria and compromise the guts protective lining. It is also vital to stay away from wheat-based products like wheat flour, cereals, pasta, and bread, which can also trigger symptoms of an unhealthy gut. Also avoid eating foods such as oats, triticale, seitan, bulgur, rye, and barley frequently. Eating a lot of grain foods that contain gluten is very problematic as well.
In addition to that, it is best also to stay away from processed foods, processed meat, baked foods, and snacks. Processed meat foods include hot dogs, bacon, deli meats, and cold cuts. Baked goods include pizza, pastries, pies, cookies, muffins, and cakes. Snack foods to stay away from consist of the following pretzels, popcorn, muesli bars, and crackers. Sauces like salad dressings, teriyaki, soy, and hoisin sauce ideally have to be avoided as well.

Bone Broth Can Keep Joints Healthy
Collagen is essential for healthy ligaments, tendons and joints. What many pet parents dont realize is that the bone degradation seen in arthritis typically begins very early when a poor diet begins breaking down essential tissues supporting joints. Bone broth is an excellent source of collagen, which contains joint protecting glycosaminoglycans like glucosamine. Its also full of chondroitin and hyaluronic acid, which are often supplemented in dogs with late stages of arthritis and poor joint health.

Is Bone Broth Healthy
Is bone broth healthy? Bone broth continues to enjoy the spotlight. In the past few years, it has become really popular, especially among health-conscious individuals.
Thats because like many foods, science has deconstructed the health-promoting properties its believed to have.
No one has done any real research on bone broth specifically when it comes to particular health issues. However, there is good evidence on the various nutrients found in the bone broth which suggests drinking it might be a good idea.
What To Look For When Buying Or Making Bone Broth
You want to either make your own bone broth or buy a high-quality frozen bone broth. You can find bone broth in the freezer section of grocery stores or there are a number of companies that will deliver frozen bone broth to you. You want to avoid shelf-stable bone broths as they may be higher in histamines and sodium, which people with leaky gut may also be sensitive to. Look for high-quality bone broth, that has been grass-fed or pasture-raised and organic bones as well to limit any contaminants or added hormones that may continue to disrupt your gut health.

What About Microbiome Testing For Leaky Gut
Although it is not specifically looking at intestinal permeability, it is taking a birds eye view at the state of your gut health and can possibly pinpoint underlying causes of leaky gut as well as hidden food intolerances that are potentially sustaining leaky gut.
Like the above tests, this can be expensive.
But if you want to get an interesting look at the state of your gut health, then consider a microbiome service like Viome they ship the testing kit to you, so the whole test can be done in the privacy of your own home.
Viome is my favorite microbiome company, since they are able to not only pinpoint imbalances, but also give you plain English advice on which foods to eat and which to avoid based on your unique gut bacterial balance.
Best Of All You Can Eat Quality Foods If You Practice The Art Of Purchasing Which Means Sticking To
- Farmers markets. Particularly if you go towards the end of the day. Hint: everything is negotiable by this point! And slightly bruised and deformed produce is your friend.
- Box deliveries. I dont always have time to go to farmers markets, so I make use of an online food delivery service as well to get a weekly box of organic vegetables. So easy. All I do is simply pick them up from a neighborhood collection point every Wednesday. Bonus: every week the box contains a surprise of what is in season and tastes great.
- Bulk purchases and freeze. You can find great deals on everything from bison to wild Pacific salmon throughout the year. They key is to keep an eye out for them and have the freezer space ready to go when theyre available. Whilst for vegetables bought in bulk, learning how to pickle/ferment them is a great idea.
- Quality online food stores. Since they usually dont have the cost of a retail operation, they can pass on the savings to you. Plus, with national delivery available from many of them, they are a super convenient solution for those of us that dont live in big cities. This is my favorite option, so we made a directory of the best online food suppliers in the USA here.

When To See A Doctor
It is always important to visit your doctor anytime you notice a change in your digestive system after consuming fatty and gluten-based foods. Most people ignore such mild symptoms, as they mostly disappear within hours or a couple of days. However, it is essential to immediately contact your doctor, even when experiencing mild symptoms, especially when those symptoms keep recurring. However, as we have already mentioned, symptoms can also become very severe. Therefore, when you start experiencing signs like bloody stools or abdominal pains that last for several days, then you should visit your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will conduct the necessary examinations to confirm your condition before starting the appropriate treatment.

Where To Get Bones
Instead of throwing leftover bones and carcasses from meals in the garbage, save them to make broth.
You can collect the bones in a bag and store them in your freezer until you are ready to cook them.
However, if youre not someone who typically buys and eats whole chickens and bone-in meat, you may wonder where you can find animal bones to make broth.
You can ask for them at your local butcher or farmers market. The meat department at most grocery stores will often have them too.
The best part is theyre very inexpensive to purchase. Your butcher may even give them to you for free.
Do your best to find pastured chicken or grass-fed beef bones, since these animals will be the healthiest and provide maximum health benefits to you.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Bone Broth
I Decided to Drink Bone Broth Every Day for Two Weeks.
Id been following a Paleo diet for a couple of months and hearing a lot about the benefits of bone broth as its considered to be an integral part of a solid Paleo diet. I had used it in a few recipes but I hadnt tried consistently drinking it daily. I decided to drink it daily for two weeks just to see if I noticed a difference.
I bought a few different brands and planned to drink one or two cups in the afternoon around 4 pm. The reason for this timing was that Ive been trying out intermittent fasting, basically doing a 16/8 pattern. My eating hours are from about 2 pm-10 pm .
I figured that having 1-2 cups of bone broth right when my eating window opened might help to tame my hunger pangs and prevent overeating. This is something Ive been working on as Ive found I just want to eat everything in sight by the time my eating window opens.

Which Type Of Bone Broth Is Better For Dogs: Chicken Turkey Or Beef
Although there are some nutritional and energetic differences among chicken, turkey and beef bone broth, all are good choices unless there are allergies or food sensitivities.
Turkey, Chicken and Beef Bone Broth Have Different Levels of Amino Acids
A study comparing 18 amino acids present in chicken, turkey and beef broth determined that:
- turkey bone broth has the highest concentration of arginine and glutamine
- beef bone broth contains the highest amount of lysine
- chicken bone broth contains the highest levels of proline and glycine.
Beef, Chicken and Turkey as Neutral or Warm Foods
Food qualities as described in Traditional Chinese Medicine can be a consideration when deciding which animal bones to use in broth. Certain conditions and doggy constitutions do better with warm, neutral or cooling meats.
For example, beef, pork and salmon are considered neutral proteins and good for most dogs, whereas chicken and turkey can be warming and might be a better choice for dogs who have cold noses, seek heat or have cool conditions like arthritis that is worsened by cold weather.
Dogs with warm conditions, who seek cool spots or have inflammation and allergies might do better with bone broths made from cooling meats like rabbit, whitefish and duck.
Disadvantages Of Bone Broth
One disadvantage to consider is that bone broth is not suitable for vegetarians. It is possible to make a vegetarian broth that increases the production of collagen in your body by using beets, kale, spinach, and seaweed. Find a recipe here: .
There are concerns that anytime you cook and concentrate nutrients from an animal or fish there may be toxins that are pulled out along with the beneficial nutrients. That is why it is so important to choose bones that are grass-fed, organic, and from a farm with low toxic exposure.
Also keep in mind that it is suggested you heat your bone broth over heat instead of in a microwave, as we dont know how a microwave could affect the amino acids.
