Sodas And Carbonated Beverages

Many people find they get heartburn after drinking sodas and carbonated beverages.

Research suggests that these drinks may relax the esophageal sphincter and increase the acidity of stomach acid two risk factors for heartburn .

In fact, soft drink consumption is considered a major contributor to heartburn that occurs at night, which is known as nocturnal heartburn .

Some studies have found a link between drinking soft drinks and worsened symptoms in people with GERD.

For example, an older study found that people who consumed carbonated beverages had a 69% higher risk of developing reflux symptoms like heartburn .

If you experience heartburn after drinking soda or other carbonated beverages, its best to limit your intake or cut out carbonated drinks completely.

Summary

Sodas and other carbonated beverages may cause heartburn by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter. If sodas or other carbonated beverages give you heartburn, consider cutting back or avoiding them completely.

Why Do Oats Bloat Me

Some people may experience a bloated feeling in their belly when they eat oats. There are several possible reasons why this may occur. Firstly, you may have a sensitivity to gluten.

Although oats themselves are gluten-free they are often grown and processed around wheat, barley, or rye, thus contaminating them with gluten.

If you’re gluten intolerant, make sure to buy oats that are labeled gluten-free. A second reason you may feel bloated after eating oats is their high soluble fiber content.

Fiber is an important part of any diet as it helps regulate cholesterol and glucose levels in the body. However, the fiber present in oats can also cause bloating, gas, and even stomach cramps.

This is especially true for people who suddenly introduce a lot of fiber into their bodies. Increase your fiber intake in a gentle and gradual way to limit your chances of bloating or other gastrointestinal irritations.

Is Oatmeal Acidic Or Alkaline

Oatmeal sits within the acidic range of food products which is also a basic answer as to why it may cause you heartburn.

Acid-forming foods can upset the digestive tract by loosening the muscles intended to keep the acids in the stomach and instead allowing them to travel the wrong way into the esophagus and mouth.

Alkaline foods, by contrast, help to regulate the pH levels in the body and generally have a soothing effect on digestive function.

The extent to which the oatmeal you consume is acidic or alkaline will also depend upon what you accompany it with.

Does Eating Pretzels Cause Gas

Some people claim that pretzels can cause gas. In fact, there are a lot of claims that foods other than beans cause gas.

A common belief among some people is that if they eat fiber foods, such as beans or cauliflower, they will experience gas a few hours later.

Some people also believe that sugar foods, such as candy or carrots, will similarly cause gas.

The belief is that the body does not digest these foods properly. They end up fermenting or rotting in the intestines, leading to gas.

Can Snacks Be Healthy

Generally, snacks have a bad reputation for being unhealthy and bad for you. Luckily, they dont have to be if you stick to a few rules. Firstly, its best to choose foods to snack on that dont contain too much fat.

This nutrient tends to cause digestive system issues and acid reflux symptoms, such as heartburn. It may also lead to weight gain, worsening stomach problems, so its important to control how much fat you consume.

Another thing to look out for is how much sugar the snacks you choose contain. This carbohydrate causes spikes in your blood sugar levels, leading to the development of diabetes and other cardiovascular issues.

Sugar can also lead to weight gain since eating sugary snacks makes you crave them even more. Because of that, its best to consume snacks like cookies and cakes very rarely, especially if your acid reflux symptoms are severe.

First The Good News: Heartburn Is Usually Easier To Treat Than Lpr

First, lets start with the good news. If bananas give you heartburn and regurgitation, you likely have typical refluxthe type of reflux characterized by only 2 symptoms: heartburn and regurgitation.

There is also a second type of reflux called laryngopharyngeal reflux. LPR is characterized by basically all symptoms other than heartburn and regurgitation. It is complicated because we still do not know exactly what causes LPR. Well talk more about this later.

Back to typical reflux. Typical reflux is usually easier to treat because its straight forward. We already know what the problem is. The problem is heartburn/regurgitationcaused by the muscle that connects the esophagus to the stomach relaxing too much and too often:

So as you can see, because heartburn and regurgitation is caused by a TLESR, heartburn technically has little to do with how acidic your food is, as there have been many reported cases of people getting reflux from simply drinking water!

Instead, Id like to propose to you that the cause of your heartburn may be due to indigestion.

Why indigestion, you ask? Well, its because, for years now, studies have reported an overlap between heartburn, reflux, and indigestion. The symptoms for typical reflux are heartburn, regurgitation, bloating, and belching.

Well, guess what? The symptoms for indigestion or dyspepsia, ARE ALSO heartburn, regurgitation, bloating, and belching:

So what could be the cause of your indigestion?

Better Bar Food #: Fresh Oysters

According to Lorraine Chu6, a New York-based registered dietician and founder of Cacaocachu, fresh oysters, a staple on many bars happy hour menus, can be a heartburn-friendly pick. Oysters are packed with the mineral zinc, which helps produce hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid helps to break down and digest protein, says Chu. Surprisingly, having too little stomach acid can also sometimes lead to heartburn.9

You may want to skip the squeeze of lemon and cocktail sauce, Chu adds, since those toppings are or can be acidic. And as tempting as it may be, don’t order the oysters fried.

Can I Eat Bananas If I Have Heartburn And Lpr

Reduce your Acid Reflux / Heartburn in just 3 Minutes!

Lets go back to LPR. I mentioned earlier that laryngopharyngeal reflux, is the second type of reflux people deal with that does not involve heartburn or regurgitation. Rather, LPR symptoms involve basically everything else outside of heartburn and regurgitation. This can include chronic cough, asthma, a sore throat, hoarseness, vocal loss, and more.

Though less common, it is possible to experience both LPR symptoms AND heartburn or regurgitation at the same time. In this case, eating bananas may actually be a plus for you if they dont give you heartburn.

This is because bananas are a soft, closer-to-neutral pH food that is easy on the throat and easy for most people to swallow. So even if the bananas do reflux back up, they shouldnt do much damage.

A Mommy And Me Gluten Free Fall Lunch At Wildflours Bakery/cafe

On one of the many beautiful fall days that we were blessed to have this year, little one and I ventured out for an early little lunch at my favorite gluten free friendly restaurant. Wildflour Bakery/Cafe is a local hidden gem that offers a huge selection of gluten free breads and pastries along with a savory menu, all of which you can enjoy in house or on the go. Since we were out to have some extra special Mommy and Me time, a lunch out was definitely in order so we picked the perfect table in the empty dining room and nestled in to enjoy a wonderfully gluten free lunch.

Soon enough our Grilled Cheese and Pink Smoothie had arrived. Little one dove into her very own cup of smoothie and couldnt get enough of it. I had to insist on a few breaks to get in some of the grilled cheese but the winners by far in her book were the smoothie and cheese puffs. The grilled cheese for mommy was just as delicious as I remembered. Its made on their housemade gluten free bread which beats any of the store bought varieties, you can just taste of all of the love thats cooked into their food.

What Salty Snacks Can You Eat On Acid Reflux

Traditional salty snacks like chips and French fries arent particularly good for people struggling with acid reflux or GERD. They are high in fat and extremely processed, which is not only bad for your digestive system, but may also lead to the development of many health conditions.

But there are many other snack choices that can help you satisfy your craving for salty snacks. Some of the best snacks you can have on acid reflux or GERD are:

  • Crackers with nut butter
  • Veggie smoothies

Even though these snacks are low in sugars and fats, they should still be consumed in small quantities and rarely. Its also important not to overdo it since calories can stack up and lead to weight gain, which comes with its own downsides.

Wrap Up On Pretzels And Their Effect On The Body

Generally, pretzels are alkaline and OK for acid reflux. Its always better to make your own pretzels because some brands are not good in their quality and are also not suggested during acid reflux.

If you eat too many pretzels, check your sugar consumption because excessive sugar may create digestive issues.

However, I always suggest consulting with your health care staff if you think changing your diet plan that will be better for your health.

What Common Foods Are Good And Bad For Your Belly

Foods containing rapidly fermentable carbohydrates called FODMAPs can feed bacteria in the gut and may be responsible for gut inflammation, gas, bloating, and other uncomfortable tummy troubles in some people. Cutting back on foods that contain FODMAPs may help improve your digestion and eliminate GI problems. An anti-inflammatory diet is high in fiber-rich foods, which promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut , says Maxine Smith, RD, of the Cleveland Clinic. A FODMAP diet, which is low in fermentable carbohydrates, is low in fiber and may be beneficial for some people with gastrointestinal problems. In general, a low FODMAP diet isnt recommended for people unless they have a condition like irritable bowel syndrome that hasnt responded to other treatments or dietary changes.

Is Heartburn The Same Thing As Acid Reflux

Are they the same thing? Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus irritating the tissue. Heartburn, or acid indigestion, is a symptom of acid reflux, so named because the esophagus lies just behind the heart, and that is where the burning sensation is felt.

Best Foods For Acid Reflux

A diet balanced with vegetables, protein and fruits is best, Dr. Khaitan says. Examples of the best foods for acid reflux include:

  • Chicken breast Be sure to remove the fatty skin. Skip fried and instead choose baked, broiled or grilled.
  • Lettuce, celery and sweet peppers These mild green veggies are easy on the stomach and wont cause painful gas.
  • Brown rice This complex carbohydrate is mild and filling just dont serve it fried.
  • Melons Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are all low-acid fruits that are among the best foods for acid reflux.
  • Oatmeal Filling, hearty and healthy, this comforting breakfast standard also works for lunch.
  • Fennel This low-acid crunchy vegetable has a mild licorice flavor and a natural soothing effect.
  • Ginger Steep caffeine-free ginger tea or chew on low-sugar dried ginger for a natural tummy tamer.

Don’t Miss: What To Eat To Help Diarrhea

When And How To Eat

When you eat can have as much of an impact as what you eat. The most important meal to time properly is dinner. Try to eat dinner at least two to three hours before bed, skip any late-night snacking, and remain upright until you go to bed. Gravity will help you digest your food faster and reduce the chance that your meal and stomach acid will be pressing up against your lower esophagus while you’re sleeping.

It’s not essential to time your earlier meals or to eat on a schedule, but it is important to eat small meals rather than larger ones. Large meals produce more stomach acid, take longer to digest, and put extra pressure on your lower esophagus, all of which make heartburn more likely.

Rather than eating three large meals, you may feel better if you eat five small meals and spread them out so they’re digested before you eat again.

Why Does Bread Cause Heartburn

If You Have Acid Reflux, This is What You Should Know

Bread, especially white bread made of refined grains, is loaded with carbohydrates and is low in essential nutrients.

Carbs are harder for your stomach to digest, which causes excess stomach acid production the leading cause of heartburn.

Also, the lack of important vitamins and minerals means theres nothing to protect your digestive system from inflammation.

Along with a hard-to-digest compound called gluten, this makes bread more likely to cause heartburn than other foods.

Don’t know what to drink? We made a list of more than 20 most and least acidic juices and 20+ alcoholic drinks ranked by acidity levels.

What Are The Healthiest Pretzels To Eat

A pretzel is a type of baked snack food consisting of very thin dough twisted to form an elongated, stick-shaped snack.

There are different variations of this snack depending on where you buy them from and their ingredients.

What makes a pretzel healthy to eat is the ingredients and whether or not it was cooked in an oven, fried, microwaved, or baked.

Better Bar Food #: Crudits

If you want to have some kind of a dip at a bar, Emily Wunder3, a New Jersey-based dietician and creator of Healthier Taste, suggests ordering a crudités plate if its available. If not, ask for raw veggies to pair with whatever dip is on the menu, which should be less irritating4 than cooked vegetables in high-fat sauces. Just remember to avoid tomatoes and onions, two typical heartburn triggers5.

Is Oatmeal Bad For Acid Reflux

Oatmeal’s level of acidity means it can cause acid reflux in some people. Acid reflux is the term given to the heartburn, acidic taste, and discomfort you feel when acids that were meant to remain in the stomach make their way back up the wrong way and into the esophagus and throat.

The uncomfortable burning sensation you feel in your chest that accompanies acid reflux is often worsened by lying down or bending over.

If oatmeal causes you acid reflux, some strategies to try and avoid this are to make your oatmeal less acidic with the addition of alkalizing foods, to eat moderate portions and never overeat, and of course to avoid it altogether.

Know The 8 Worst Foods For Acid Reflux Or Heartburn

Experts say you can uncover your specific triggers by paying close attention to how your body reacts to what youre eating. But you may well find one of the following eight foods pops up as a problem.

1. Fried, fatty foods. Talk about a triple whammy. First, foods that are high in fat and drenched in oil cause the lower esophageal sphincter the ring of muscle connecting the esophagus and stomach to relax, allowing acid to leak out and up into the esophagus. Also, they are digested slowly and sit in your stomach longer, giving gastric acid more time to work its way up into your esophagus, increasing your risk of heartburn. And high-fat food can cause weight gain. That extra poundage increases pressure on your abdomen, making it easier for fluid to travel upward, into the esophagus. Tip: Opt instead for lean cuts of meat, chicken and fish, cooked on the grill or in the oven.

2. Citrus fruits. Their vitamin C may be the draw, but these fruits high acid content makes them risky for reflux. Lemons and limes are the biggest culprits, but oranges, grapefruit, grapes and blueberries make the list, too. Tip: Offset their acidity by buffering them with more alkaline foods, such as low-fat yogurt.

5. Peppermint. A cup of refreshing, mint-infused tea can calm a turbulent tummy. But peppermint, in any form, can also cause gastric reflux and heartburn. Tip: Savor a cup of soothing chamomile tea or suck on licorice-flavored hard candy to soothe your stomach.

Congratulations Youre Pregnant How Did You Survive Your First Trimester While Being Gluten Free

I can still remember the day we found out that we were expecting our little girl. Of course we had been trying so I suppose seeing a positive shouldnt have been too shocking but for some reason a positive pregnancy test will always make your heart skip a beat and give you instant butterflies in your stomach. I, like many others, couldnt wait until the skipping a period sign so I took my first test on the earliest possible day, Bad move, since it came back negative and left me very disappointed. So, Dan and I agreed to wait a few more days and try again, little did we know what that day would bring.

It was early on a Sunday morning and we had one more non-digital, line reading test. I left the test on the bathroom counter while I went about my early morning routine, almost forgetting to check back in the right amount of time. We decided to take a look together and I think our jaws both dropped at the sight of a faint second line. In fact, my husband was so surprised he ran to the Rite Aid down the street and bought some digital tests for a more definitive answer. Sure enough, a few short minutes of a flashing hourglass and the word pregnant illuminated the screen. We were pregnant!!!
