Can Coconut Oil Cause Diarrhea

Must read

It Can Be Dangerous To Use As A Personal Lubricant

Can You Get Diarrhea From Coconut Oil? What are the side effects of coconut oil?

Using coconut oil as lube is tempting for a lot of reasons, but can be dangerous if you aren’t careful. While it’s great that coconut oil is anti-bacterial, that also means it may have the potential to upset vaginal pH balance. According to Planned Parenthood, the research is inconclusive on whether coconut oil itself is a sexual health risk, but that additives and sugars can lead to yeast infections.

Moreover, it’s very important not to use oil-based lube if you’re going to use a condom. This is perhaps the greatest danger of using coconut oil as a lubricant, becuase it can damage condoms and lead to breakage.

Topical Application Of Coconut Oil For Dogs

Coconut oil can add moisture to your dogs skin and prevent flaking. It also helps freshen up a dogs coat if used with a light touch. To use it topically, simply rub a very small amount onto your hands and then gently pat the coat, run your fingers through the fur, and massage a little down onto the skin. Since coconut oil can be given orally, you dont have to worry if dogs lick themselves after its been applied to their coats.

May Lead To Liver Issues

The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are transported to the liver, where they are converted into energy. Some experts theorize that the speed at which these MCFAs are brought to the liver can cause a problem. This may put stress on the liver and even harm the organ over time. If you have any liver disease or diabetes, it is recommended to avoid coconut oil or any other food containing MCFAs.

Another study linked using repeatedly heated coconut oil to toxic effects on the liver . More studies are warranted to prove these effects.

The Chemistry Of Coconut Oil

Coconuts grow on coconut palm trees and once harvested the coconut is broken open, the coconut “meat” or copra is dried, and then pressed hydraulically at 100 to 130 degrees F to extract the oil. Per tablespoon the resulting oil has 117 calories, 0 grams of protein, 13.6 grams of fat and 0 grams of carbohydrate . It provides negligible vitamins or minerals. For further reference see the USDA National Nutrient Database.

Coconut oil is largely made up of saturated fat. Saturated fats are so called because they have all their Carbon to Hydrogen bond areas occupied by strong single bonds. Every bond site is “saturated” with as strong a bond as it needs – its dance card is full, in layman’s terms. The fact that the fat molecule already has Hydrogen atoms in very stable arrangements also means the oil is not very reactive with oxygen, making saturated fats relatively stable for long term storage. In general, saturated fats have been thought to be not the ideal dietary fat source. Polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids found in chia seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and other seeds have generally been preferred because they were supposed not to cause complications with vascular system health in the way that saturated fats supposedly did.

What Is Coconut Oil

As its name suggests, coconut oil is extracted from mature coconuts. More specifically from the meat of the harvested coconut. There are many uses of this oil. The food and beauty industries also make a lot of products from it.

Coconut oil consists of about 90% saturated fats. That alone would not give rise to its popularity. However, most of these fats are Medium Chain Triglyceride . Although saturated fats are generally unhealthy, MCTs are considered good fats. For example, they are excellent sources of energy.

Components of coconuts MCTs include lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid. All three acids are known to have antibacterial or antifungal activity. In addition, we also find a number of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in coconut oil.

Is It Safe To Eat A Spoonful Of Coconut Oil

The saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are what make it a high calorie food. The risk of coronary heart disease is increased if your diet contains a high amount of saturated fatty acids. Researchers, however, have found that coconut oil can be beneficial in terms of weight loss, as well as reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.

How Much Mct Oil Should I Give My Dog

There is no clear answer to this. The key is to start with a very small amount and gradually increase the dose. For starters, 1/8 teaspoon will be good. MCT oil can cause diarrhea in large amounts, so you should pay attention to this.

If you want to apply it topically, my advice is the same. Start with a very small dose, 1-2 times a week. Slowly increase the dose and frequency.

And most importantly, consult your veterinarian. He will also be able to tell you a lot of useful advice on the subject.

Cbd Oil Is Good For Gastrointestinal Issues

Why Does Too Much Coconut Oil Cause Gastrointestinal Issues? | #AskMikeTheCaveman Part 215

IBS or Irritable Bowl Syndrome affects about 10%-15% of the population and is a condition where the large intestine becomes irritated very easily, leading to abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, etc. Foods & beverages like coffee, alcohol, high amounts of fiber and fructose are known to trigger symptoms along with many others–and even those without IBS can get diarrhea from too much of such.

Anti-inflammatory & Pain Reduction

One of the ways CBD can help is with it’s anti-inflammatory effects, which should help sooth and lessen pain/discomfort. According to Harvard Health CBD can inhibit both inflammatory and neuropathic pain, both of which can come from IBS.

A 2008 study from European Review for Medical and Pharmocological Sciences explains how CBD can decrease the intestinal motility induced by inflammation–thus providing treatment for disorders of gastrointestinal motility, such as diarrhea. This likely comes from it’s ability to reduce inflammation in the intestines through the control of neuroimmune axix, as described in a 2011 study published in PLoS One.

Stress

Additionally, stress and anxiety can actually trigger flareups in people who suffer from IBS as well as diarrhea in those who are perfectly healthy.

This is another area where CBD can help, due to it’s ability to help balance the nervous system, calm the body and so on.

Coconut Oil: Benefits Uses And Side Effects

Coconut oil has its benefits – and risks – depending on who you talk to, as it grows to a multi-billion industry.

Behold the coconut, one of Mother Nature’s sweetest tropical fruits

Scientists and foodologists aren’t entirely sure where coconuts came from, and when, but their best guess is that coconuts are a variety of prehistoric plant that originated in the South Pacific – most likely in New Guinea.

Reportedly, sailors aboard Vasco de Gama’s fleet dubbed the fruit with the name “coco” – sailor lingo for a hobgoblin-like, grimacing face. When “cocos” were brought back and introduced in England, the locals added the term “nut” to coco, giving it the name still widely in use today.

The inside meat of a coconut is considered by nutritionists to be abundant with protein, while the milk inside the coconut is light, refreshing with a low sugar level. Besides being a South Pacific food staple, coconuts have other uses as well. For example, natives have used coconuts as an insect repellent

Perhaps the most useful ingredient inside a coconut is the oil, which health-food advocates say contributes to higher energy levels and a stronger metabolism. In fact, coconut oil’s benefits have become a hot topic in health and nutrition circles, as more and more people turn to coconut oil to better their wellness habits.

Are they on to something? Here’s a deep dive on coconut oil, and what it brings to the table for you.

What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut Oils Effect On Cholesterol

But theres no evidence that consuming coconut oil can lower the risk of heart disease, according to an article in the April 2016 Nutrition Reviews. The study, titled Coconut Oil Consumption and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Humans, reviewed findings from 21 studies, most of which examined the effects of coconut oil or coconut products on cholesterol levels. Eight were clinical trials, in which volunteers consumed different types of fats, including coconut oil, butter, and unsaturated vegetable oils for short periods of time. Compared with the unsaturated oils, coconut oil raised total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol levels, although not as much as butter did.

These findings jibe with results from a study by Dr. Sun and colleagues in the Nov. 23, 2016, issue of The BMJ, which examined the links between different types of saturated fatty acids and heart disease. Compared with other saturated fats , lauric acid didnt appear to raise heart risk quite as much. But thats likely because American diets typically dont include very much lauric acid, so its harder to detect any effect, Dr. Sun notes.

It Can Give You A Bad Allergic Reaction

Even if you haven’t noticed an allergic reaction when eating coconut, it’s possible that your skin will react negatively to using coconut oil.

“While coconut is not a very common food allergy, it is actually a more common skin irritant,” registered dietician and Mealshare pro, Chelsea Clarke, tells Bustle. “Because coconut oil is cropping up in many skincare products, people should be aware that a mild allergy to coconut can cause a rash. In the case of food allergies, ingestion of an allergen can cause mild or life-threatening reactions, from hives to anaphylaxis.” It’s important, then, to be careful using coconut as a skin product if you have adverse reactions when eating it, and vise-versa.

In addition, coconut oil also has a moisturizing effect. Therefore, you can also apply it to the dry, itchy skin of your dog.

Why It Causes Diarrhea As Well

Besides the personal stories you may find all over the internet from people who have taken CBD oil and got diarrhea, there have been some studies documenting such unwanted side effects.

One clinical study from 2015 took a look at the effects of CBD on various forms of epilepsy from 137 children. The results were good, but 17% of the patients did experience diarrhea.

An even larger study with 261 patients, all of whom suffered from severe epilepsy, found great results from giving the patients CBD–but again, diarrhea was an unfortunate side effect–this time affecting 10% of the patients.

It Might Not Be The CBD Itself

CBD oil’s relationship with diarrhea is a very understudied subject. While the side effect could possibly be due to CBD itself, this seems unlikely and many people think otherwise.

One reason people could be experiencing diarrhea after supplementation could be from the carrier oil, if there is one.

Coconut oil, hemp oil, MCT oil etc.–there is often a carrier oil mixed in with the CBD and this could easily be the cause. Oils are very high in fat and some people have difficulty digesting high amounts of such, which leads to unabsorbed fat and increased water secretion in the small intestine and colon, equaling likely diarrhea.

Why Does Coconut Milk Bother My Stomach

The sugar in coconut milk contains fructose which can cause fructose malabsorption, a condition that affects 40% of western populations. If you find that you develop flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, vomiting and fatigue when using coconut milk, then you may need to avoid this new food craze.

Coconut Oil Dogs And Inflammation

Newer research shows that coconut oil is inflammatory and can cause leaky gut. In fact, the ASPCA advises owners not to give their dogs coconut oil because it can irritate the gut lining. contain oils that may cause stomach upset, loose stools or diarrhea.

Research also says coconut oil can also increase both the amount and the toxicity of LPS. This is why researchers say its a potentially dangerous addition to your dogs diet .

Here are some of the research and the problems it says coconut oil can cause in your dog:

Coconut Oil IsHigh In FatCoconut oil is high in fat. Studies show that a high fat diet feeds species of bacteria that cause inflammation in the gut . And it causes the species of bacteria that contain toxic LPS to grow.

Coconut Oil Is Rich In Saturated FatsCoconut oil is 80% saturated fat. Research shows saturated fatty acids cause inflammation in the gut, leading to leaky gut.

Lauric AcidA 2018 study in Nutrients showed that lauric acid increases inflammation more than any other saturated fatty acid. Palmitic acid had the same effect.

Lauric acid is also antibacterial. While thats viewed as a benefit, researchers say lauric acid can kill the gram-negative bacteria that have LPS in their membranes. The LPS can then travel through enterocytes with the dietary fats and circulate through the body.

Even without leaky gut.

LPS Uses Saturated FatsLPS has tails called Lipid-A. These tails can either be made from saturated fats or from polyunsaturated fats.

It Is Associated With High Cholesterol

Can Coconut Oil Cure Bv

Coconut oil may be plant-based, tasty, and trendy. It also may be bad for your heart if you use it exclusively, or long-term.

“Coconut oil is high in saturated fat,” Rachel Fine, registered dietician and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition, tells Bustle. “Saturated fat has been shown to raise LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol levels correlate with risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular events.” Even the American Heart Association found that in randomized studies there wasn’t a difference in LDL cholesterol rates between coconut oil and other oils high in saturated fat such as butter, beef fat, or palm oil. So even if it may seem like it would be safer to use in large amounts, it’s something worth considering.

Size Of Coconut Oil Market

In 2016, the size of the global coconut oil market stood at $4.6 billion, although sales declined in 2017, as coconut prices rose, and as demand slowed moderately.

The countries where coconut oil is consumed the most include the U.S., Indonesia, and the Philippines, with the latter two countries, along with Mexico and Vietnam, are the largest producers of coconut oil, as of 2017.

Haley Hernandez, Health Reporter

HOUSTON Coconut water is a rich source of nutrients, minerals and antioxidants which help to cure dehydration and constipation. Think of it as nature’s sports drink without loads of calories.

However, some of its benefits may also be its pitfall.

You might get too much potassium which can cause some stomach upset and GI upset, diarrhea, and then also you can get added sugar in coconut water, said Dr. Richard Harris, from Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Katy.

Coconut water can impact blood sugar levels and weight gain.

This would be especially troubling if you have diabetes, and the potassium is not good for patients with kidney problems.

People on certain medications that can elevate potassium, some people who have naturally higher levels of potassium, some people who have stomach issues may be a little bit more sensitive to high potassium, Harris explained.

Keep in mind that too much of anything, even coconut water, can cause health problems
