Dannon Oikos Triple Zero

I cant tell you how many people have been misled by the name of this diet yogurt. The name makes people think its a free food. It still has calories. It still has sugar . And though it says it has zero artificial sweeteners, it has stevia, a nonnutritive sweetener. There is a lot of conflicting evidence out there regarding all nonnutritive sweeteners, including the non-artificial ones. At this time, I recommend avoiding them if possible.

In addition, this yogurt has added chicory root fiber for 6g fiber . Just bewarethis might have the same effect on your *ahem* bowel regimen as a FiberOne bar.

Choosing Yogurt With Lactobacillus Acidophilus

In general, most yogurts contain probiotics, but if you want yogurt with acidophilus, the National Yogurt Association’s website AboutYogurt.com, recommends looking for their “Live and Active Cultures” seal. Buying a yogurt with Lactobacillus and the NYA seal ensures that you will be eating refrigerated yogurt that contains at least 100 million cultures per gram at the time of manufacture or frozen yogurt that has 10 million cultures per gram.

With that in mind, when looking for a high-quality yogurt with acidophilus or live and active cultures, the first step is to check for the NYA seal or the words “live and active cultures” on the label. There are several brands that meet the NYA criteria, which means, you should be able to find one that you like.

Before you grab a spoon and dig in, you’ll want to check the sugar and protein content. When choosing a yogurt, Harvard Health Publishing recommends sticking with one that has less than 10 grams of sugar per serving.

Additionally, you’ll want to check the label for protein and go with one that has 5 grams or more of protein per serving. Many yogurt companies now offer Greek-style yogurt, which is a great choice if you want some extra protein.

    If you’re eating yogurt mainly for the probiotic benefits, make sure to look for The National Yogurt Association’s Live & Active Cultures seal on packaging: It means that when manufactured, the yogurt contained at least 100 million active starter cultures per gram. Most yogurt brands in the United States contain probiotics, but the organisms must be added after heat processing, so check the label to be sure. If it states “live and active cultures,” then the yogurt has probiotics.

    Other important factors to consider are the amount of protein and sugar included. When it comes to protein, aim for a minimum of six grams of protein in non-dairy yogurt alternatives and at least 10 grams in regular dairy yogurt. More or less is okay but yogurt can be a great source of protein so it’s helpful to pack it in when you can. Also be sure to read the nutrition facts panels for sugar content. Many of the flavored types can get out of hand when it comes to sugar cane, juices, and high-fructose corn syrup additions. There are many delicious yogurt options on the market with 15 grams of sugar or less.

    The ingredients are important to consider too. When buying dairy-based yogurt, organic, grass-fed yogurt is best. Artificial sweeteners are aplenty in the yogurt aisle so if they bother you or they’re something you try to avoid, make sure to read the labels. It’s best to look for simple ingredient lists typically consisting of the “milk” base, fruit, sugar, pectin and live active cultures.

First, Ill let in you in on what Im looking for when I pick up a yogurt. Then Ill give you my reviews for 15 commonly found yogurts.

    What Is Greek Yogurt

    Greek yogurt begins like regular yogurt by heating milk and fermenting it with bacteria. The fermentation process converts milk sugar into lactic acid.1;

    Traditionally, the yogurt is then strained in cloth bags. But nowadays most modern yogurt manufacturers strain their yogurt with centrifuges in order to achieve the thick Greek texture.

    Reducing moisture in this way also increases protein and fat content per weight.;

    Other yogurts like Icelandic skir, use a similar process, and are labeled strained yogurts.;

    Watch out for companies that use thickening agents to achieve a Greek yogurt texture. These will be labeled Greek style yogurt. 2 Theyre often cheaper, but are higher in carbs and lower in protein and fat.;

    Its worth noting that traditional Greek yogurt was made exclusively from sheep and goats milk. In addition to having more nutrients that contained only A2 milk proteins that may be healthier and easier to digest.
