  • Curcumin

Fighting inflammation is key to healing a leaky gut. A powerful antioxidant is appropriate like curcumin, the active ingredient from one of the worlds most famous spices, Turmeric. Curcumin supports the elimination of free radicals from the body and prevents tissue injury within the gastrointestinal tract. . Turmeric can also be added to just about anything like meat marinades, stews, sauces, and even smoothies. Non-Dairy Turmeric Lattes are now a popular drink too.

  • Ginger

Sometimes considered as effective as aspirin and ibuprofen in fighting inflammation, ginger promotes digestion as well as motility within the gut. Ginger has been used for ages to relieve symptoms related to heartburn, nausea, migraines, menstruation, and morning or motion sickness. However, ginger also has an antimicrobial ability which resists bacteria commonly involved in leaky-gut or gastrointestinal infection.

  • L-Glutamine

Surprisingly not considered essential, L-glutamine is the most concentrated amino acid in blood plasma. Its crucial role in digestive tract maintenance and immune response regulation makes it easy to recognize L-glutamines ability to repair the gut lining while also functioning as an antioxidant. L-Glutamine is so effective at repairing tissue that it has also been used to enhance and improve nervous system function.

Strategy #4: Kill Overgrowth Of Bacteria Fungi Or Viruses

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

The concept applies to infections and the gut. Infections can cause gut dysfunction. Gut dysfunction also creates an immune environment that invites infection. In either case, when an infection is present, it must be dealt with appropriately. A lingering infection delays & blocks healing from occurring.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s tough to rebuild something that is still smoldering. A hidden infection can be a cause of the smoldering.

Here are a number of infections worth discussion when it comes to mucosal health in the gut.

Epstein-Barr Virus :

EBV infection can linger & reactivate chronically years after acute infection or exposure.

EBV is in the same family of viruses as Herpes Simplex Virus , Herpes zoster , Cytomegalovirus & others. All of these viruses share an “envelope” or “lipid capsule” as part of their viral structure.Lipid-coated viruses such as EBV are implicated in chronic disease, fatigue, & inflammation throughout the body – including the gut mucosa.

EBV lives in your lymphocytes which are highly present in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue . It turns lymphocytes into a “zombie” like state where they stick around in the body much longer than intended.

In my practice, I use Ultimate Monolaurin by Inspired Nutrition.

Helicobacter pylori :

H. pylori is prevalent in the Western world. High antibiotic use the US population may increase its incidence compared to other parts of the world.

What Causes Leaky Gut Syndrome

Dysbiosis: Does Your Dog Have Leaky Gut?

So what causes leaky gut? In seeing hundreds of patients each year, I have come to the conclusion there are five main contributors to poor gut health.

1. Chronic Stress

The first contributor to poor gut health starts with ill-managed and chronic stress, which manifests in increased or severely suppressed cortisol.  Increased catecholamines from stress also play a role in breaking down mucosal lining, which can be found all along your digestive tract from your esophagus to your intestine .

2. Medication

The second contributors that will disrupt your gut health are pharmaceuticals and common medications like antibiotics, antacids, and corticosteroids. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are not targeted meaning that when you take these medications, they dont just work on the intended target; they will also impact the good . Antibiotics, one of the most commonly prescribed medications today, for instance, are known to destroy the beneficial bacteria in your gut and can cause a variety of other health issues. Even common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen and ibuprofen dont come without risks, which is why its best to always consult with your doctor for guidance on medication and look to a healthy lifestyle and natural remedies as your first line of defense.

3. Infection

4. Hormonal Imbalance

5. Poor Diet

So You Might Also Want To Consider Temporarily Cutting

  • All nightshades. Potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers etc. These guys come packed with their own form of bug repellent, alkaloids. Suffice to say, not everyone responds well to them and they can cause inflammation and digestive issues93.
  • Eggs. These can spike a high allergy response in a lot of people, and the lysozyme in egg white especially may be troublesome94.
  • Nuts. Like eggs, these may not react well with your body95.
  • Seeds. Seeds are meant to survive dormant for long periods of time and through varying conditions so, due to being constructed of natures tough-to-crack materials, even the sprouted ones can cause issues for some people.
  • All vegetable starches. If youre still struggling 30 days into the diet, well then sadly, even that innocent looking sweet potato has to go96.
  • All fruits. That low sugar berry shake you started loving on the leaky gut dietwell, that is out!
  • All dairy. If you were eating raw unpasteurized yogurt for the probiotics or sheep cheese, stop. Its out as well97.

Of course the best news is that these eliminations arent necessarily permanent.

In idea #36 below, well look specifically at how to reintroduce these borderline foods in later to see if they still cause issues or whether some can be permanently added back into your diet.

IDEA #24

The Leaky Gut Diet And Treatment Plan Including Top Gut Foods

By Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition thats thought to affect millions of people, many of whom dont even know it. The good news is following a leaky gut diet can help overcome this condition.

From the sound of it, you might think leaky gut syndrome only impacts digestive health, but in reality it can lead to many other health conditions. For example, according to recent research, the cause of your food allergies, fatigue, joint pain, thyroid disease and autoimmune conditions may be a leaky gut.

What is the fastest way to treat leaky gut? Following a healing leaky gut syndrome diet is one of the best strategies for getting your body back on track.

In this article, I outline specifically how a leaky gut diet works, so you can break through some of the stubborn health problems youve been struggling with.

What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome is a proposed condition caused by increased intestinal permeability.

The digestive system consists of many organs that collectively break down food, absorb nutrients and water, and remove waste products. Your intestinal lining acts as a barrier between your gut and bloodstream to prevent potentially harmful substances from entering your body .

Nutrient and water absorption mostly occurs in your intestines. Your intestines have tight junctions, or small gaps, that allow nutrients and water to pass into your bloodstream.

How easily substances pass across the intestinal walls is known as intestinal permeability.

Certain health conditions cause these tight junctions to loosen, potentially allowing harmful substances like bacteria, toxins, and undigested food particles to enter your bloodstream.

Alternative health practitioners claim that leaky gut triggers widespread inflammation and stimulates an immune reaction, causing various health problems that are collectively known as leaky gut syndrome .

They believe leaky gut leads to various conditions, including autoimmune diseases, migraines, autism, food sensitivities, skin conditions, brain fog, and chronic fatigue.

Yet, there is little evidence to prove that leaky gut syndrome exists. As a result, mainstream physicians do not recognize it as a medical diagnosis.

How To Repair Leaky Gut Syndrome And Heal Naturally

How to Heal your Leaky Gut Naturally

If you suspect youre suffering from leaky gut syndrome, there are many things you can do to reverse the problem and heal naturally . The points I covered above regarding the causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome suggest ways in which we can remediate the problem.

1. Stop Consuming Inflammatory Foods

One of the biggest culprits of Leaky Gut Syndrome are inflammatory foods. Unfortunately, these are the foods most people grew up to love. Packaged foods, frozen meals, sugary treats, fast food, you name it.

Foods that cause inflammation actually damage epithelial tissue, which is your gut tissue . This damage can lead to intestinal permeability, as it creates small holes in the gut lining.

GMO corn and foods in general Fried foods Wheat Refined sugar and carbohydrates Red meat Highly processed vegetable oils Additives and preservatives found in processed foods Alcohol

As you get rid of the foods above, start incorporating foods that will heal the gut like fermented foods , green juices and smoothies, almost all fruit and vegetables , coconut, spices like turmeric and ginger, and healing teas like peppermint.

2. Reduce Your Stress Load

High stress levels cause chronic inflammation by weakening your immune system . If your immune system isnt functioning well, it wont have as much defence against foreign bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. Therefore, they have a higher chance of inhabiting your body and creating inflammation .

3. Boost Gut Bacteria

Is Leaky Gut Syndrome Real

There is some debate in the medical community if leaky gut syndrome should be considered its own disorder.  And, as of now, leaky gut syndrome is not considered an official diagnosis.

Nevertheless, there is ample evidence that the human gut can become leaky. And when it does so, it does let dangerous molecules into your body, contributing to the development of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and allergies.

So, whether researchers and doctors decide to offer leaky gut syndrome official disease status or not, having a leaky gut can make you sick. And this means that, for all practical purposes, the answer to the question, Is leaky gut syndrome real? is yes.

Four Essential Rules To Follow For Probiotics

Rule #1:Probiotics need to make it through the stomach acid alive.
Rule #2: Spore probiotics live in the soil. These soil-based organisms are gut microbes that use dirt as the vector into our body.

Initially, take them for 30-60 days straight before moving to the “three on, seven off” schedule. Start low & work up to the dosage at first as with most probiotics, prebiotics or antimicrobial extracts.

Rule #3: Dietary starches and fibers do not feed spore probiotics

Since most of us do not play in the dirt regularly or eat soil-dusted food like our ancestors, I recommend supplementation with spore probiotics to assure we’re receiving the gut and immune benefits of soil based organisms.I use Â Megasporebiotic, Restorflora, HU58, and to a lesser degree, Truflora to support spore diversity – Microbiome Labs is the industry leader for spore probiotics & have created a fantastic, clinically-studied suite of products for the gut.

Rule #4: You cannot supplement with some healthy bacteria in the gut as the gut is naturally an anaerobic environment. Anaerobic bacteria cannot survive the oxygen-rich environment of a capsule powder.

Use PREbiotics to promote the growth of these strains. I discuss prebiotics in the next section.

Wherever Possible Try To Do As The Drug

What is a Leaky Gut?
  • Cut down drug intake and rely on more natural remedies. For example, breathing exercises and meditation can work well to replace mild pain relievers.
  • Prevent the causes happening in the first place. This is the big one! So for example, NSAIDs are often taken during hangovers. Solution: dont get drunk. Another example headaches often flair up on days where you dont have enough sleep, drink too little water and/or OD on caffeine. Solution: ah well, you get the point.
  • Take probiotics. Many drugs by design will strip your digestive system of bacteria, both good and bad, eg antibiotics59. So during and after use, consider trying a probiotic supplement, which can add more good bacteria to your gut. In particular, ask your doctor about S Boulardii, which is a probiotic yeast that can help our gut60, even when we are taking antibiotics.

Speaking from personal experience, I found that even seemingly necessary drugs were no longer necessary if I addressed the deep root causes.

For example, when working on a new doctor-supervised asthma protocol several years ago, I found it possible to cut down my corticosteroids intake by 80% within 30 days by addressing leaky gut itself.

The funny thing is by following many of the ideas on this page you will naturally find your use of these drugs reduces, ie the vicious cycle stops. Gut happy!

The Leaky Gut Conundrum

Leaky gut can be one of the most challenging problems for those with gluten sensitivity.  Primarily because the extensive damage caused by years of gluten exposure leaves this vital system in disarray.  Gluten

  • Disrupts the gut barrier
  • Causes digestive distress
  • Leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies and Mal-absorption

On top of that, the other properties of gluten and grain in general can also cause GI damage and inflammation.  Examples include:

  • Heavy GMO pesticides used in grain production
  • Heavy level of mycotoxins found in grain.  Heavy levels of mold found in grain.
  • Large quantity of oxylates that block mineral absorption
  • Chemicals called ATIs that hinder digestive enzyme release from the pancreas.

All of these factors contribute to delayed healing and persistent problems with food allergies, infections, and digestion. This big cycle is one of the most frustrating catch 22s  in healing.

To heal we need a healthy gut to receive nourishment, but because the gut is broken, we cannot get at the nourishment necessary to heal.

Foods To Eat When You Have A Leaky Gut

Now that you know what not to eat, you might be thinking, “What’s left?” “Focus on clean ingredients with easy-to-digest foods that are low in fructose and sugar and devoid of any substances, including sugar alcohols and pesticides, that are hard on the gut,” Pedre told mbg. Unlike a lot of the other ideas in this article, I genuinely believe this should be a permanent lifestyle change.

For example, whilst alcohol is something your gut can most likely take in moderation when youre back to good health, I really dont think gluten is for most of us.

Of course, everyone is different and you will find out pretty soon if you reintroduce it into your diet after 30-90 days.

I will note that currently I do consume some gluten. But it is usually as trace/small amounts. For example, occasionally I might eat some oats for breakfast that are not certified gluten free.

P.S. if you find it hard to ditch these types of foods completely, fear not. As there are some fantastic recipes to make a lot of these foods gut-friendly.

Avoid Crap Coffee Refined Sugar Alcohol Processed Foods

LEAKY GUT SYNDROME | How to HEAL Leaky Gut NATURALLY?

First things first, you have to remove the troublesome foods that are known to damage our intestines.

High caffeine, processed foods, sugars and alcohol are all linked to a leaky gut. These items support the growth of yeast, bacteria, candida and other pathogens in the gut.

These pathogens release toxins called exotoxin that damage the gut wall and enlarge the tight junctions that make your gut literally start leaking.

Is Leaky Gut Real

Your gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract, includes over 4,000 square feet of intestinal epithelial lining that controls what gets into your bloodstream.

If unhealthy, this lining may be leaky with holes or cracks that allow bacteria, toxins, antigens, and partially digested food to penetrate the tissues beneath it.

That can trigger inflammation and changes in the gut flora , which could lead to problems within your digestive tract and beyond.

Although leaky gut is not recognized by mainstream medical professionals as a condition, its generally recognized as a symptom.

According to a

currently available specifically for leaky gut. The treatment recommendations youre likely to receive from your doctor will be focused on the underlying condition theyve diagnosed, which might include leaky gut as a symptom. For example:

Poor Diet And Inflammatory Foods

Sugar, alcohol, and some processed foods generally increase inflammation and intestinal damage, or may feed existing dysbiosis, which can lead to increased gut damage and leaky gut. And though these foods are often inflammatory, any food that you have a food sensitivity or food allergy to can continue to encourage leaky gut.

Gluten and gliadin, the proteins in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and kamut have been shown to increase zonulin in celiac and non-celiac people alike [43

Additional Tips For Treating Gout Naturally

Studies show that many of the dietary items we consume lead to gout as well as other health problems. Changing your diet and lifestyle may be the easy solution to beating gout. One of the first things to do is eliminate certain foods and beverages from your diet to beat gout.

1. Eliminate or reduce sugar intake

As many studies are now illustrating, gout is common in people with excessive sugar intake, especially high fructose corn syrup Its wise to read the labels of all your food and drinks. If you find HFCS then eliminate that from your diet. In addition, look for sugar added under the guise of other common names for sugar; look for cose at the end of words and these are probably types of sugar you dont want to be consuming.

2. Eliminate grains

Grains in the body are converted to sugars so again you want to limit or avoid grains altogether. They are also very inflammatory to your body.

3. Limit alcohol consumption

Again, alcohol becomes sugar once ingested so eliminate this completely unless you have a healthy body already. Any substance that will be converted to one or another type of sugar by the body should be avoided at all costs. In order to get your uric acid levels down you must consistently avoid sugar in your diet.

4. Eliminate soda and diet soda

5. Consume cherries and strawberries daily

6. Exercise

The Most Effective Ways To Help A Client With Leaky Gut Syndrome

What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome and How Does it Impact our Health?

Everyone and their mother seem to be talking about “Leaky Gut Syndrome” lately. As a wellness professional, you may even have clients coming to you with symptoms asking, “Do you think it might be leaky gut!?”.

Leaky Gut Syndrome refers to an increase in intestinal permeability or intestinal hyperpermeability in extreme cases.

A healthy gut lining allows only specific components of food to pass through into the bloodstream. This is how nutrients enter the bloodstream and promote health.

However, poor diet, stress, and some medications can damage the gut lining over time. The result is a more permeable gut lining, which allows larger particles to enter the bloodstream while failing to properly absorb key nutrients.

Undigested food particles, gut bacteria, proteins, and toxic waste shouldnt be able to enter the bloodstream. But when the gut lining becomes compromised they do, causing negative consequences.

While Leaky Gut was once thought to affect only those with serious medical conditions such as Celiac Disease, we now know that even slight increases in intestinal permeability can cause chronic health issues.

Common signs and symptoms of Leaky Gut include autoimmune disease, food sensitivities, digestive issues, inflammatory skin conditions, compromised immunity, joint pain, brain fog and low energy.

Today I’ll be discussing the most effective ways to help a client with leaky gut syndrome including

Strategy #5: Direct Gut Lining Support

Think of the gut as a 3-layered tube.

Gut microbes comprise the inner area of the tube. Here, they interact with the non-sterile slurry delivered from the stomach. The slurry can contain pathogens & harmful proteins. The middle layer is the mucosa – this is the connective cushion that contains immune cells and “food” for gut microbes & fuel for immune cells and our gut lining. The next inner layer of the tube is the cells of intestinal lining . The absorptive folds known as “villi” provide surface area for absorption. Between the cells of the folds are microscopic junctions. These tight junctions comprise the physical “gates” that control what gets into the blood & what stays out. “Leaky gut” refers to the unintended opening of these gates. The intestinal lining is the last layer of defense between the outside environment & the inside world of the bloodstream. It also coordinates cross-talk between the mucosa, the immune system, & bacteria .

Mucosal Lining Support

I use L-Glutamine Powder by Pure Encapsulations and often use more affordable L-Glutamine by Progressive Labs in a bulk size.

Zinc Carnosine

Zinc carnosine deserves a strong mention for direct lining support. It is one of the more underrated supplements & one of my favorites.
