How Do You Know If you Have Leaky Gut? Ask Your Doctor For These Tests

There are tests for leaky gut, which can be useful if you want hard evidence that you need to address your gut health. In other words, having proof that something is going on in your body might help to motivate you to make changes in your lifestyle or stick to a protocol.

For a more detailed rundown of how you can know if you have leaky gut, read our blog How do you know if you have leaky gut? Some quick answers

At Healthpath we use a PEG test to look at leaky gut. Together with your symptom survey, our Registered Nutritional Therapists and Functional Medicine Practitioners use the results to build you a personal diet, lifestyle and supplement protocol to get you great gut health.

For all you need to know about leaky gut testing, read Testing for leaky gut syndrome: the complete guide .

For most people, we recommend a deep-dive into the workings of your gut: a Gut Health Test. Some of our Gut Health Tests look at your zonulin level, which is one marker of leaky gut.

However, theres really no comparison to a stand-alone leaky gut test and a Gut Health Test, which is a fully comprehensive analysis of the goings-on of your gut. It looks at:

  • Your microbiomes health: stool consistency, pH levels, microbe diversity, enterotype, and dysbiosis index.
  • Bacteria, yeasts , moulds, parasites, worms, H. pylori and pathogenic bacteria.
  • Advanced biomarkers: digestive function, immune system and inflammation.

Bonus elements on more advanced tests include:

Food Allergies / Intolerances

As we know food sensitivities may arise when undigested food particles or toxins in general cross the gut barrier and into your bloodstream.

So what were saying is that to develop a food intolerance, having an overly permeable gut lining may just be a prerequisite11.

Basically heres what happens: whole food particles arent meant to cross the gut barrier into your bloodstream. When they do, the body doesnt recognize them so, the immune system flares up in an attempt to defend your body against what it perceives as foreign invaders.

Well, we all know what it means when the immune system flares up inflammation, inflammation, inflammation! And thats accompanied by a large side of symptoms.

Unfortunately, it might continue doing this every time you eat certain foods, especially gluten and dairy12 .

And thats the thing foods you may have previously tolerated, can all of the sudden become intolerable, as the body is now fighting against them every time they show up.

Although you can do the elimination diet, like me, to see what foods cause you grief, there are certain foods that might only cause you subtle pain.

Thats where a food intolerance test comes into play. Without this test it can be quite difficult to identify exactly which foods are causing a reaction and, you may very well keep eating them without even knowing theyre harming you!

This can lead to ongoing, low level systemic inflammation. i.e. your leaky gut will never completely heal.

Take A Probiotic Supplement Daily

Unless youre going around eating sauerkraut all day like some crazed German Popeye, your gut will be crying out for probiotics, aka good bacteria.

In fact, long term youll find probiotics are the #1 thing to get more of in order to help maintain good gut health46,47.

The reason probiotics work so well is something I dive deep into in my article on probiotics and leaky gut syndrome.

But one of the most interesting roles it can play is its ability to fight leaky gut by enhancing the production of tight junction proteins as mentioned in Frontiers In Immunologys 2017 research paper on leaky gut.

In addition, the good bacteria can help to fight off bad bacteria and yeast overgrowth, so that your gut flora can start regaining a healthy balance48.

And best of all, continued use of probiotics can help ensure the ratio of good to bad bacteria stays in the healthy range, which means bad bacteria and excessive yeast may not return and cause leaky gut again. A bonus benefit is that a healthy gut flora will also aid digestion49.

When all 3 benefits are taken together you can see why probiotics are at the heart of any leaky gut recovery protocol.

Some Cooking Notes For This Recipe

  • Make sure to run your fermenting jar through the dishwasher before using it a hot wash will help remove any bacteria that could interfere with the fermentation.
  • For starter culture, you can use a vegetable or dairy based one. I tend to personally opt for the former. Each sachet will likely have a couple of grams of culture. And come with instructions on how to prep it, before adding it to the jar.
  • Your kraut can be stored for more than the 2 week period mentioned in the graphic. In fact, unopened, you could keep it for 6-9 months easily.
  • But once you open your kraut, keep it in the fridge, and for max 2 months.

P.S. If you ever get sick of eating fermented vegetables then consider a probiotic supplement and of course, just be thankful you dont have to resort to a fecal transplant to restore your gut flora!

Is There A Test For Leaky Gut

How Do You Know If you Have Leaky Gut? Ask Your Doctor For ...

While diagnosis is incredibly difficult as mentioned, there is one specific test that some physicians will use in order to test intestinal permeability. The test is called the mannitol and lactulose test. Both of these are water-soluble molecules that the body cannot use. Mannitol is easily absorbed by people with healthy intestinal linings, whereas lactulose is a larger molecule, and thus is only slightly absorbed. A person is instructed to drink a solution containing both of these molecules, and then their urine is collected for six hours. The amount present in the urine reflects how much was absorbed by the body a healthy test will display high levels of mannitol, and low levels of lactulose. If high levels of both are found, it indicates increased intestinal permeability. If low levels of both are found, it indicates general poor absorption of all nutrients .

It is important to note that this test is an indicator of small intestine permeability, and cannot definitively diagnose leaky gut with full certainty. Most physicians steer clear of this test, as they do not believe it is very reliable. Additionally, since increased intestinal permeability is a symptom of many other diseases, it should not be used to necessarily diagnose leaky gut syndrome, as this could prevent a patient from receiving treatment for a more serious condition they may have. Seeking the advice of a gastroenterologist is recommended, as they specialize in digestive health and the GI tract.

If You Like Red Wine Greatso Do I

Like with white wine, the crucial thing here is to choose dry over sweet so we cut down our sugar intake.

My favorite choices of red are thus pinot noir and a nice big shiraz . But other dry red wines include merlot and zinfandel.

What I perhaps like most about red wine is that it has a lot of taste memory, meaning it is relatively hard to over indulge.

Is Leaky Gut Real

Your gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract, includes over 4,000 square feet of intestinal epithelial lining that controls what gets into your bloodstream.

If unhealthy, this lining may be leaky with holes or cracks that allow bacteria, toxins, antigens, and partially digested food to penetrate the tissues beneath it.

That can trigger inflammation and changes in the gut flora , which could lead to problems within your digestive tract and beyond.

Although leaky gut is not recognized by mainstream medical professionals as a condition, its generally recognized as a symptom.

The 3 Things To Look For In A Great Digestive Enzyme Supplement

How do I know if I have LEAKY GUT?
  • It must have a broad range of different enzymes. That way it will help you digest multiple food groups, ie protein, carbs, fats28. I would always look for a product with over 10 different enzymes.
  • It should ideally be plant based, so it can work throughout the wide pH range of your gut AND is strong enough to effectively break down your food.
  • It should be dosed strongly across ALL enzymes in the formula, but especially the kings of enzymes, being protease, lipase, amylase and cellulase31.
  • BONUS it should be gluten free, dairy free and soy free32 and most importantly, this should be independently verified by a 3rd party laboratory.

    Signs Of Leaky Gut Syndrome

Digestive issues can really put your life on hold. Theyre uncomfortable, potentially embarrassing, and can limit your activities.

Identify The Foods You Should Eat:

As mentioned, foods that are low in fiber can lead to this condition. This offers you the opportunity to fix a leaky gut naturally. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that you consume a lot of food high in fiber to heal the leaky gut. It is also advisable to eat many fruits and vegetables to boost or support your immune system. Foods that are rich in probiotics and prebiotics are also essential. But if you do not have access to such foods, you can replace them with probiotic supplements. You should also include a lot of fish, meat, eggs, and yogurt in your diet and eat a lot of healthy fats as well. This is because a form of short-chain fatty acid called n-butyrate plays an important role in feeding the cells that line the gut. This way, it helps to provide the weak cells in the gut linings with the necessary nutrients and helps them heal faster. Also, when you consume a lot of soluble fibers, fruits, and vegetables, you will help support the gut bacteria responsible for producing n-butyrate. Other sources of healthy fat include clarified butter and coconut oil- which contains medium-chain fatty acids essential for keeping a healthy gut.

How To Repair Leaky Gut Syndrome And Heal Naturally

If you suspect youre suffering from leaky gut syndrome, there are many things you can do to reverse the problem and heal naturally . The points I covered above regarding the causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome suggest ways in which we can remediate the problem.

    1. Stop Consuming Inflammatory Foods

One of the biggest culprits of Leaky Gut Syndrome are inflammatory foods. Unfortunately, these are the foods most people grew up to love. Packaged foods, frozen meals, sugary treats, fast food, you name it.

Foods that cause inflammation actually damage epithelial tissue, which is your gut tissue . This damage can lead to intestinal permeability, as it creates small holes in the gut lining.

Foods that inflame the gastrointestinal tract include: Dairy GMO corn and foods in general Fried foods Wheat Refined sugar and carbohydrates Red meat Highly processed vegetable oils Additives and preservatives found in processed foods Alcohol

As you get rid of the foods above, start incorporating foods that will heal the gut like fermented foods , green juices and smoothies, almost all fruit and vegetables , coconut, spices like turmeric and ginger, and healing teas like peppermint.

    2. Reduce Your Stress Load

While reducing stress is easier said than done, it is really important that we keep it to a minimum. Stress not only causes leaky gut, but it negatively affects our entire body.

    3. Boost Gut Bacteria

How Long Does It Take To Heal Your Gut

Based on first-hand experience and observation, I believe healing a leaky gut can take anywhere from 6 months to 2-10 years to heal from and resolve leaky gut health issues. It will depend on where youre at from a clinical standpoint when you start addressing it, your genetics, how old you are, what caused your leaky gut, how long youve had it, what else is going on with your health/lifestyle/diet/stress, and how consistent you can remain once youve cracked the code.

    • Keep in mind: there is no One Size Fits All approach when it comes to healing your gut! If youre on that journey, the path is not linear and it requires a customized, holistic, multi-dimensional approach that takes TIME! Everyones timeline is different.
