Can Uterine Fibroids Affect Pregnancy

Fibroid Belly: Why Is My Belly Enlarged?

Most women with fibroids have issue-free pregnancies, but they can cause some complications. Some Fibroids can bulge into the uterine cavity, potentially affecting fetal growth. Some others can cause severe pain due to degeneration .

Fibroids are also linked to a 6 x greater risk of needing to deliver via cesarean section and a risk of heavier bleeding after delivery.

Will I Get My Flat Stomach Back After Ufe

Patients often ask about having a flat stomach after their UFE. After UFE, fibroid-related weight gain starts to come off. For women with large fibroids and/or multiple fibroids, this can mean a significant body change.

As you move out from under a fibroid issue, youll recover your drive and energy. Youll be free of constant, debilitating discomfort. And adding exercise to your daily routine will be something enjoyable instead of fearful.

Weight loss after embolization is just easier. Its hard to notice positive body changes when your abdominal area is bloated and distended. And the life limits imposed by fibroids may mean youve been sticking close to home, as opposed to out there and active. Inactivity can certainly pile on the pounds.

While embolization addresses weight loss from fibroids by shrinking them, additional weight loss will be influenced by diet and exercise habits. The important factor is patience and dedication. Every patient is different. Generally speaking, maximum shrinkage after UFE takes about six months. But the freedom youll have from heavy periods, pelvic pressure, fibroid pain happens immediately after UFE. And youll be able to re-engage with an active lifestyle quickly, much faster than if you had surgery.

Your Periods Are Out Of Control

There are a lot of things that can cause changes to your menstrual cycle, and fibroids are a super-common culprit. If you have what we call a submucosal fibroid, a fibroid within the uterine cavity, youll bleed much more than typical, says Shirazian. That means your period would be longer, heavier, or you might bleed in between periods.

Were not talking an extra day or a little spotting herethe bleeding would be significantly greater than or different from your norm.

Can Uterine Fibroids Dissolve

Fibroids are living tissue, requiring oxygen and nutrients to survive and grow, supplied by blood vessels in an around the uterus. Usually, Oestrogen hormone causes the fibroid to grow while Progesterone hormone causes Fibroids to shrink, but only to some extent. .

When fibroids become too large, the blood vessels supplying the fibroid are no longer able to provide enough sustenance to meet the needs of the fibroid.

When this happens, the cells of the fibroid begin to die in a process called degeneration.

There is also a risk that once the blood supply returns to the fibroid, it will begin to grow and eventually reach the point of degeneration again.

A Common Problem Few Women Want To Talk About: Fibroids Cause More Than Just Pain

Why Fibroids Cause Leg and Back Pain

These growths often are small and dont cause symptoms they may wax and wane over time. But it is not unusual for them to occur in clusters and to enlarge the uterus to the size of an advanced stage pregnancy. Large fibroids can cause symptoms such as heavy bleeding, the need to urinate frequently, constipation, bloating and pain.

The condition is a major cause of lost work days and is estimated to cost the United States billions of dollars annually in medical and surgical treatment and lost work time. In some instances, fibroids can affect a womans ability to become pregnant and to carry a pregnancy to term. Fibroids can also have a negative effect on a womans quality of life, according to one study, which linked the condition to lower self-esteem, body-issue anxieties and fears about relationships and sexuality.

When you look at the burden of disease not only its impact on quality of life but also on womens ability to work and take care of their kids its really quite stunning, said Evan Myers, a professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University School of Medicine.

Yet many women who have fibroid symptoms delay reporting them. In a recent Harris Interactive survey of more than 800 fibroid patients, women reported waiting 31/2 years, on average, before seeking help a third said they had waited more than five years.

It took a lot of recovery time, and it was only a temporary fix, she said.

Can I Reduce My Risk Of Fibroids And Weight Gain

The best place to start is by maintaining your routine of clean eating and daily exercise. Eliminate red, processed meat, salty foods, and certain carbohydrates that lead to weight gain. Birth control pills and insulin-like growth factors can also lead to fibroid growth.

    • Eat more fruits, especially citrus, and vegetables
    • Avoid consuming too much alcohol
    • Drink more dairy
    • Increase your Vitamin D intake
    • Lower your stress levels
    • Get more exercise

If diet and exercise arent enough to decrease the stomach bulge and improve your weight after a fibroid diagnosis, you may want to consider a revolutionary procedure known as Uterine Fibroid Embolization . UFE is unique because it treats fibroids without having to go through a painful surgery and lengthy recovery time. UFE uses image-guided radiology and tiny particles to safely cut off the blood supply to fibroids, causing fibroids to shrink and die. As a result, your fibroids and weight gain will be a thing of the past.

    Weight Gain And Bloating

Simply put, the more a fibroid grows, the heavier it will become. Consequently, weight gain and discomfort will follow as some fibroids can weigh up to as much as 20-40 pounds. This swelling and bloating can even make a woman look pregnant.

    Reasons For Stomach Bulging

Bulging of the stomach when the women are not pregnant may be a cause of concern. Bulging of the stomach without any expected reason may indicate something more serious than expected. Various reasons are elucidated for stomach bulging. Some are chronic while others are acute. Following are the various reasons for bulging stomach:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome is the chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. This disease causes a plethora of symptoms. The condition leads to indigestion, constipation and bloating. The swollen belly is considered as the initial symptom of irritable bowel syndrome1.

Excess Food. Stomach appears swollen when the person takes excess food. The puffiness on the face is also visible. Generally, the women are more prone to this condition due to the slow intestinal transit1.

Unhealthy Diet. Apart from overeating, unhealthy eating may also be the reason for a bulging stomach. The most common foods that create problems include potatoes, processed food, salty foods, and carbonated drinks. These foods cause fluid retention, promotes gas formation or may cause constipation. The stomach may appear bulged due to these reasons1.

Uterine Fibroids. Uterine fibroids are the benign tumor growth occurring in the uterus. The stomach gets bulged due to the presence of these fibroids and the extent of bulging depends upon the size of fibroid2.

    You’re Feeling Pain During Sex

This isnt a fibroid symptom that ob-gyns are going to hang their hats on, but it can occur along with other fibroid symptoms. You could have a fibroid that protrudes or bulges down into the vagina, says Acholonu, which could cause pain during penetration, or, because a fibroid is generally attached to the uterus, it could be jostled during intercourse and hit another part of the anatomy, which can result in pain.

Painful sex can result from several other down-there issues, ranging from cervical cancer to vaginal dryness. Pain is nothing to shrug off, but talk to your gyno before sounding any alarms.

    Adenomyosis And Stomach Problems

Whether you have an enlarged uterus or you are just experiencing adenomyosis and stomach problems, you may know the discomfort of having to run to the restroom every five minutes. Adenomyosis can cause a myriad of digestive issues such as:

    • Constipation, mild to severe
    • Nausea caused by intense, sharp pain or constipation
    • Frequent urination

All of these symptoms can impact your daily life by interrupting your schedule. When the uterus becomes enlarged, adenomyosis affects bowels by putting excess pressure on your surrounding organs like the bladder, intestines, and rectum. Depending on where the endometrial tissue is growing, will determine which organ it may affect more.

Adenomyosis and digestive issues are quite common and women often feel like their body is out of control. Symptoms like these can be frustrating and stressful, especially if youre out in public. Until you can get treatment, make sure to be prepared with an extra change of clothing, locate convenient bathroom locations, and track your symptoms. Additionally, you can adjust your water intake before youre leaving the house or eat a healthy diet to help temporarily manage your symptoms. When youre ready to get help for adenomyosis and stomach problems or other bladder issues, the Fibroid Fighters Foundation will be here.

    Tummy Trouble with Uterine Fibroids

It is possible to experience a handful of stomach trouble when you have uterine fibroids. This, however, might not be too big of a concern for most women unless it hampers their daily activities. Small growths in the uterus usually do not present symptoms, but larger fibroids can cause you to have excessive gas, diarrhea, and bloating.

    Size and Location Matter

The bigger the fibroids in the uterus, the more likely they are to cause symptoms in the abdominal area. The non-cancerous tumors may cause the uterus to grow larger and press on the bowels. When this happens, the patient could experience excessive gas and bloating.

The location of the non-cancerous tumors is also a factor in assessing a patients condition and predicting what possible symptoms to expect. As the fibroids grow at the back of the uterus and press onto the rectum, for instance, they block the passage of stool and thus cause constipation. Hard stools are trapped and loose stool goes beyond the point where the fibroids press against the rectum.
