Common Questions About Gaviscon

Gaviscon is a type of medicine called a reflux suppressant.

Reflux is when stomach acid travels up your food pipe and gives you a burning feeling in your chest.

Reflux suppressants like Gaviscon contain alginic acid which is made from seaweed. Alginic acid makes a protective foam layer that floats on top of the contents of your stomach. This stops stomach acid escaping into your food pipe.

Gaviscon also contains an antacid that neutralises stomach acid and reduces pain and discomfort.

You should start to feel better soon after taking a dose of Gaviscon. The effect of 1 dose should last for around 4 hours.

If you buy Gaviscon, rather than having it prescribed by a doctor, and you do not feel better after taking it for 7 days, tell your doctor. They may want to do tests or try a different medicine.

Gaviscon does not usually cause problems when you take it for a long time. Tell your doctor if you need to take it regularly for more than a week.

Yes, Acidex and Peptac are similar to Gaviscon.

These medicines are reflux suppressants. They work in the same way as Gaviscon, by reducing acid in your stomach and preventing excess acid escaping into your food pipe. They generally work as well as Gaviscon and have similar side effects. However, they may be given in different doses to Gaviscon.

There are a number of different medicines for indigestion and heartburn.

Doctors can only prescribe some kinds of Gaviscon, not the full range available from pharmacies and supermarkets.

Alcohol Affects Women Differently

Women, in general, have a higher risk for problems than men. When a woman drinks, the alcohol in her bloodstream typically reaches a higher level than a mans even if both are drinking the same amount. This is because womens bodies generally have less water than mens bodies. Because alcohol mixes with body water, a given amount of alcohol is more concentrated in a womans body than in a mans. As a result, women are more susceptible to alcohol-related damage to organs such as the liver.

Why Treat Heartburn And Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

Heartburn and acid reflux are traditionally considered innocuous because they are common in pregnancy and are usually self-limiting. However, a recent study suggests that GERD is associated with an increase in the severity of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy , which can have serious negative effects on a womans quality of life. In a prospective cohort study conducted by the Motherisk Program, 194 pregnant women with NVP and heartburn or acid reflux were compared with 188 pregnant women with NVP who did not have heartburn or acid reflux. The 2 groups were assessed for severity of NVP with the pregnancy-unique quantification of emesis and nausea score, which is a validated scoring tool based on frequency and duration of nausea, vomiting, and retching in the past 24 hours, with a high score indicating more severe NVP. Quality of life was measured by the well-being score, with 0 being the worst and 10 being the best. Forty-eight percent of women in the control group had severe NVP according to the PUQE, compared with 75% in the group with heartburn and acid reflux. The mean well-being score in the control group was significantly higher than that in the group with heartburn and acid reflux .

Gastroesophageal Reflux And Ulcer Drugs

Though Elder said it may be OK to have one drink if you have heartburn, larger amounts of alcohol can relax the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus, increasing acid reflux. This could produce a burning sensation in the upper chest and a sour taste in the back of the mouth, she explained.

Although Elder said there’s not really any direct reaction between alcohol and proton pump inhibitors, which are the drugs commonly used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease , drinking can make heartburn worse.

The holidays can be challenging for people with GERD because there’s often so much tempting food and alcohol. “It’s hard to tell whether it’s eating or drinking that is causing reflux symptoms to flare up,” Elder said.

Alcohol can irritate and erode the lining of the stomach and esophagus, and also increase the amount of stomach acid produced, thus worsening acid reflux as well as ulcer symptoms.

Elder advised people with stomach ulcers to avoid alcohol because it can slow an ulcer’s ability to heal.

How Do Tums Work And What Are They Used For

As you probably know, Tums is an antacid. Its main use is to settle symptoms of indigestion, also known as heartburn.

The active ingredient is calcium carbonate which helps neutralize stomach acid.

There are many different types of antacids available on the market and they all work in slightly different ways. Tums would sit on the weak side of the spectrum in terms of how well it neutralizes stomach acid.

In fact, in the UK at least, calcium carbonate based antacids are not routinely used for this purpose.

So, with the basics out the way, lets focus on all things tums and alcohol-related.

  • Determine what is most important to you: cost , formulation , time to have an effect , quality of the product , etc
  • Some products labeled gluten-free actually have gluten in them, because they still meet the FDA definition which allows for up to 20 parts per million.
  • Look at the source of the flavors and dyes to ensure safety during pregnancy
  • Constipation treatment options are limited when you cant swallow, eliminating many options. Since my suggestions are for information only and not in any particular order, start with whichever one you can tolerate. If that doesnt work, then try another option.

Heartburn After Drinking On An Empty Stomach

Alcoholic gastritis is a common cause of heartburn when drinking on an empty stomach.

Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, this is especially true when drinking on an empty stomach.

This irritation might increase the risk of developing ulcers and cause inflammation of the stomach lining, called gastritis.

Typical symptoms of alcoholic gastritis are abdominal and chest pain, which feels like heartburn.

Even if you are not prone to having heartburn, it is recommended to steer clear of drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, as it still damages the stomach lining.
