Additional Requirements For Mathematics Hl

Mathematics, in the IB Diploma course, is one subject with the greatest difference in difficulty and analysis between SL and HL students. Hence, Mathematics HL is intended for students “with a good background in mathematics who are competent in a range of analytical and technical skills,” and who anticipate that mathematics will be “a major component of their university studies, either as a subject in its own right or within courses such as physics, economics, engineering and technology.” Therefore, HL students study the Core topics in much greater depth than SL students and for a minimum of 190 instructional hours, studying at least one of the following optional topics , for a minimum of 40 additional instructional hours:

Theory Of Knowledge Extended Essay And Cas

Scoring that perfect 45 is definitely a challenge: IB reports that less than 1% of candidates actually get a full score. But, understanding how IB works as a curriculum and its purpose can help you get as close as possible, and it starts with understanding the core of IB.

As mentioned earlier, Theory of Knowledge , Creativity, Action, and Service and the extended essay all play a major role in passing and earning the diploma. It is essential to earn the minimum required points from the core to get the diploma, as having a great score but failing to earn the three core points will fail you entirely.

The scoring table for the core looks like this :

Doing well on your core to earn the extra three points means understanding TOK and the extended essay. CAS usually is organized by your school via school excursions and activities. Theory of knowledge can be a little tricky to new IB students, but learning to enjoy the class and find application of its contents in life is a game-changer.

As for the extended essay, youll need to learn how to choose the subject, find a supervisor and outline your essay. These can be difficult tasks, but they become much more easily manageable if you start early enough in your two-year study. Starting early gives you more time to improve each draft, but also frees up time for other work, like exams and internal assessments.

The International Baccalaureate® programmes are designed to help students develop their critical thinking skills, nurture their curiosity and develop their ability to solve complex problems.

There are four programmes in total:

  • Primary Years – age range 3-12

  • Middle Years – age range 11-16

  • Diploma – age range 16-19*

  • Career-related – also for students 16-19 but who are looking at further/higher education, apprenticeships or employment

*As part of the Diploma programme, students have to take at least one subject from the Studies in Language and Literature category. Modern Languages falls under the Language Acquisition section within that.

On this page, well be focusing on the Language B course, designed for students who have some previous experience of their target language: French, in this case.

Youll need to show that youve learnt the language and can use it in a range of contexts whilst also demonstrating an understanding of French culture. After results are released, visit the IBs Request for Results Service page to have transcripts sent to schools. A fee of $17 is charged for each request, even if you havent sent results previously.

What Is The Ib Grading Scale

Mean, Median, Mode [IB Math AI SL/HL]

IB has a grading scale to assess their students, with a total score of 45. To obtain the diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 24 points as well as pass the minimum requirements for the core of the program. Students take six subjects in IB, with each class worth seven points of the total grade. So, the total points you can earn from your classes is 42, with the leftover three points coming from the core mentioned earlier.

IB grades students based on a combination of school-based internal submissions such as research papers and numerous external examinations, with the number of exams per subject differing depending on whether or not the student opted for an HL or SL version of the class. If you dont submit your IA, youll instantly become ineligible to receive the diploma, but receiving a failing score on your IA doesnt completely ruin your shot at the diploma.

Each subject is graded on a scale of one to seven, with seven being the highest grade possible. Each examination is made up of at least two papers per subject, but usually contains more. For the sake of a better explanation, lets talk about exams using IB Biology as an example. The IB Biology exam is broken down into the following parts:

Each paper has a different percentage of weighting, but note these values can and usually will change every year. For IB Biology, the breakdown looks like this:

Calculating your final grade after these exams would use a formula like this:

    + * 20%

Generally speaking, the Analysis and Approaches course provides a very classical approach to mathematics. If you are eager to dive into the world of abstract theories and are keen on learning about the various types of proofs and methods we use to reach generalizations about the world around us then AA is the course for you.

In comparison, the Applications and Interpretation course provides a very different perspective on some of the same problems and concepts that are explored in the AA syllabus. If you enjoy maths but would like to see the practical applications of mathematics in the world of finance and the natural sciences amongst others then AI is a better fit for you. If modeling brings you thrills in maths, then AI is for you.

Still not sure? Katherine Johnson once said, like what you do, and then youll do your best. She loved maths enough that she took on segregated American and won, becoming one of the first black female mathematicians to work for NASA who developed the Apollo mission.

AA or AI: if you like the syllabus, chances are youre going to enjoy doing the work needed for that ultimate 7!

To Participate As A Course/certificate Student:

A student may participate in the IB Programme at the certificate level. Though we encourage all students to complete the IB Diploma, not all do. Students not completing the IB Diploma are called “courses candidates”. Courses Candidates must take 3 or more IB subjects, pay the IB exam fees for the courses in which they are enrolled, and take the IB exams in those subject areas.

Ib Year 1 Vs Ib Year 2

IB year 1 is the time when everything is new, and the students are getting accustomed to what IB is all about. Year 2 is a lot of focusing on finishing your Extended Essay, Internal Assessments, etc. Year 2 of IB is relatively more challenging as you have multiple submissions along with the final exams and the CAS reflections. A majority of students pick up their socks in the first year itself and finish what they can to have a less hectic second year.

Because of the overwhelming nature of IBs year 2, it is good practice to manage your time efficiently. There is almost no scope of procrastinating your course work in Year 2. Any student guilty of doing so will face a lot of difficulty in graduating with an IB Diploma.

Ib Spanish Standard Level Versus Higher Level

Every year after learning Spanish for 4-5 years when students are preparing for the GCSE exams the same questions always arise, should I take a language like Spanish as one of my HL subjects? Many students say things like I heard that HL Biology is so hard maybe is better that I take HL Spanish since I am quite good at languages? but I am unsure how hard it is.

So what are the main differences between HL and SL and how much extra effort will I need to put if I take HL? The simple answer would be: ONLY the reading paper makes the big difference.

For a more detailed answer here is the explanation step by step:

    – The score is separated in the following way:

    30 % Reading

    20 % Writing Assignment

So lets go from bottom to top:

  • The writing assignment in fact you do it at home, which means you can prepare it well and with the help of a tutor you can get an excellent grade, so this doesnt make a difference between HL and SL.

  • Speaking is internally assessed and it gets moderated. Speaking is always on the same topics like health + one more. If you prepare well enough the typical questions that your teacher will ask you and you know some fancy grammar structures and Spanish phrases HL or SL wont make a big difference in the difficulty.

How To Get A Perfect 45

While its important to remember only a small fraction of IB students achieve a 45, aiming for it will lead in getting a high score regardless. Success lies in passing and excelling in the core, but also properly practicing for examinations. IB has a vast amount of past examinations, which make excellent resources to prepare and study for the format of the exam and its contents .

Aside from practicing past papers, subject selection is also just as important. Choosing your higher-level and standard-level classes so that you enjoy them is important only taking rigorous classes and overloading on the hardest HL subjects isnt recommended. That isnt to say dont take difficult HL classes , but instead split your workload evenly and find classes that you can genuinely find interest studying in! This will make exam prep, IAs, and even the extended essay all enjoyable processes, hence making getting a high score easier!

While your score doesnt affect college admissions chances, showing proof of course rigor and hard work in IB is more important in your college applications. For more information on what your college chances might look like, check out CollegeVines Admissions Calculator, which considers your courses, GPA, and test scores to calculate your unique chances at top schools!

Q: What Are The Ib Exams Like

A: There are rigorous requirements for the IB exams including the administration of the tests. The calendar of when an assessment may be administered is dictated by the IB and applies to all IB schools around the world.

Depending upon the subject a student takes, they may sit for upwards of 18 papers over the three week testing period. All morning exams begin at 8:00 AM and afternoon exams begin at 2:00 PM. The length of the exam varies from 45 minutes for some SL exams to 3 hours for some HL exams. Please refer to the IB Exam Schedule for more information about times.

To help alleviate some confusion and stress about the IB exams, a simulated History Paper 1 and Paper 2 exam will be administered to all students in late March. The students will experience the full formal exam setting including working with the coversheet, exam booklets and invigilator instructions in the actual exam space.

HL vs SL: Which to Choose?

It can be difficult to choose between Higher Level and Standard Level for your IB subjects. Hereâs our view on how to make your mind up.

Letâs start by assuming youâve already picked your six IB subjects. That was tough, right? So now you should be ready to go?

Well, no, you still have to choose which will be your Higher Level and Standard Level subjects! This is hugely important, as it will impact not just how much you study, but also what material you cover, and maybe even your ultimate score. So, what do you do?

As the names suggest, HLs are more advanced â they cover more material, take more teaching hours to cover, and go into more depth and complexity. Usually, students take 3 HLs and 3 SLs, although some students do choose to take 4 HLs and 2 SLs. Generally speaking there is no necessity to take the extra HL, and doing so can result in an overall lower grade as you have less time to devote to your six subjects. If, however, you are deeply excited about all four subjects and confident that you can handle the additional workload, it is not as impossible as people sometimes make it sound!

So which subjects should you choose as HL and which as SL? Here are five things to consider when deciding on your final package.

Overall, take the time to look into your options thoroughly, but donât overthink it too much, and feel free to reach out to us directly if you have any specific questions. Good luck!
