Fruit And Protein Require Different Digestive Juices

According to Crysler, our bodies break down food using two different types of digestive juices: acidic and alkaline. Protein requires acidic juices while fruit requires alkaline, she says. So when you mix them together, your stomach has to produce both and they essentially knock each other out. When this happens, she says, the food you just ate can become stuck in the GI tract, which can lead to some, er, unpleasant side effects.

Food combining , isnt backed up by scientific evidence, but it does have a long history in ancient practices like Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Crysler says a big part of TCM takes into account the timing and combination of the foods you eat, and one part of that is keeping fruit consumption separate from the rest of your meal. According to Chinese medicine, fruit should be eaten 20 minutes before or after anything else, Crysler says.

If you experience any digestive problems on the reg, Feller says its worth steering clear of carrageenan to see if the symptoms go away. Do Certain Foods Cause Bloating

Absolutely, says Czerwony and shes willing to name names. So, here are 15 foods that can give you that swollen feeling, plus ways to maybe avoid the pain.

Beans

Its hardly a surprise to see beans atop the list of bloat-causing foods. After all, the legendary powers of this legume have even captured the attention of lyricists: Beans, beans, the musical fruit

Science is behind that tune, explains Czerwony. Many types of fiber-rich beans are packed with carbohydrates and more specifically sugars called oligosaccharides. These sugars dont digest gently.

Ultimately, that process leads to fermentation and plenty of gas, which has been known to occasionally escape in a trumpet-like blast.

Tips to try: Soaking nutrition-rich beans in water ahead of mealtime can take some of the fight out of the oligosaccharides and make them easier to digest. Also, some beans tend to be less demanding on your system.

Lentils

Lentils are also legumes, so its basically the same story as beans .

Tips to try: Soaking lentils can work wonders. Also, heart-healthy lentils come in a rainbow of hues. Lighter-colored lentils tend to have less fiber than their darker counterparts, which makes them easier to digest.

Dairy

Did you know that 3 out of 4 people eventually lose the ability to digest lactose, the main carbohydrate in dairy? Lactose intolerance can cause bloating and other pretty significant digestive problems.

Carbonated beverages

Wheat/rye/barley

Cruciferous vegetables

Onions

Garlic

But does dough deserve another chance? It is Christmas after all

Dietitian Lucy Jones is out to bust common bread-related myths. Well let her explain why bread isnt actually responsible for bloating and how cutting it out of our diets could actually be damaging our health.

Truth: Myths about yeast and bloating perhaps stem from the fact that yeast causes things to rise, and therefore may consequently conjure up the mental image of bloating.

However, as found by the British Nutrition Foundation, there is actually no published evidence to support that yeast is a cause of bloating the yeast in bread is actually deactivated during baking, meaning that no live yeast will be present in the end product

Truth: Occasionally, when people who have low fibre intakes suddenly start consuming more fibre, they may experience symptoms associated with bloating. In the majority of cases however, the gut will adapt to the increased fibre intake and any symptoms should cease.

Avoiding bread for this reason, can actually work in reverse, resulting in constipation which can in turn lead to bloating.

What Exactly Is Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance is an impaired ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Lactose intolerance is NOT an allergy. A milk allergy is an immune response to protein in cows milk and results in skin rash, symptoms of inflammation of the esophagus or intestine or, occasionally with life-threatening anaphylaxis or shock. A food allergy happens when your immune system overreacts to a specific food protein, causing an allergic reaction. Unlike food allergies, food intolerances do not involve the immune system, but happen when an individual is missing the enzyme lactase . Milk allergies are generally diagnosed in the first year of life, while lactose intolerance occurs more often in adulthood.

How I Got Rid Of My Bloat

It was only up until the beginning of this year that I suffered from awful stomach issues almost every single day. I remember it starting around my third year of college and sadly turned out to be the norm. I became so used to feeling bloated, gassy and uncomfortable most days of the week, and got stomach aches at random times throughout the day.

I went to school for nutrition, but ironically had the most difficult time figuring out what was going on with my own body. It was frustrating.

It wasnt hard for me to stay physically active during college. I played competitive sports since I was young and working out continues to be a great stress reliever and start to my day. At the time of these stomach issues, I wasnt necessarily able to reach the goals I had with fitness because of how my body was reacting to the foods I was eating. In lieu of finding a diet that worked for me and to become more familiar with the many diets people followed for my future career as a dietitian, I experimented with my fair share of diets: high-protein, high-carb, low-fat, vegetarian, low calorie, macro counting it seemed like I tried them all and nothing proved to work exceptionally well.

Most mornings were great, but as the day went on it would progressively get worse and generally by the end of each day I would be at the peak of feeling bloated and uncomfortable.

Too Much Dairy Could Increase Risk Of Certain Cancers

Does Lactose Intolerance Cause Constipation

Aside from the immediate side effects, there’s mixed research on the long-term health consequences of consuming dairy.

Some studies have found high dairy intake is linked to higher risk of certain types of cancers like prostate or breast cancer. However, other studies on the same subject have found no significant increase in risk. Many of these studies are epidemiological, meaning they look at trends in consumption and illness in the population over time, and therefore can only determine correlations, not causation.

Other research has found dairy could also lead to a lower risk of other types of cancer, such as colon cancer.

What Happens In Lactose Intolerance

Normally, when we eat something containing lactose, an enzyme in the small intestine called lactase breaks it down into simpler sugar forms called glucose and galactose. These simple sugars are then absorbed into the bloodstream and turned into energy.

In lactose intolerance, the body doesn’t make enough lactase to break down lactose. Instead, undigested lactose sits in the gut and gets broken down by bacteria, causing gas, bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Lactose intolerance is fairly common. Kids and teens are less likely to have it, but many people eventually become lactose intolerant in adulthood. Some health care providers view lactose intolerance as a normal human condition and not a disease or serious health problem.

Besides age, people can become lactose intolerant due to:

  • Ethnic background. People of Asian, African, Native American, and Hispanic backgrounds are more likely to develop lactose intolerance at a young age.
  • Other problems with the digestive tract. People who have inflammation of their upper small intestine, such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease, have less of the lactase enzyme.
  • Medicines. Some antibiotics can trigger temporary lactose intolerance because they affect how the intestine makes lactase.
  • Infection. After a bout of infectious diarrhea, some people can develop a temporary lactose intolerance that usually improves after a few days or weeks.
