I Had No Idea This Food Caused Bloating And I Was Eating It Every Day

When I tried cutting sugar out of my diet and all I could think about non-stop was getting my hands on some lusciously sweet, sugar-coated sugar, I realized it wasnt just what I lovingly referred to as a sugar tooth. It felt more like a gripping addiction, which made it that much more important to get control of. It took me about three weeks to ditch sugar, and afterward, I honestly didnt crave it as much.

Once I felt like I had a handle on my sugar obsession, I began re-introducing a little back into my diet. Nothing crazy like soda or frosted doughnuts. Vanilla soy milk in my overnight oats, a little piece of dark chocolate after lunch, and a slice of home-baked chocolate chip banana bread after dinner didnt seem like much, but then I started having terrible, labor-like gas pains and bloating like Id never experienced.

I went to the doctor, convinced I had some rare form of food poisoning or a 12-foot-long worm living inside my intestines. I went through a slew of blood tests, stool tests, and other tests Id rather not talk about. They couldnt figure out what was wrong. I thought it was weird that they never once asked me about my diet, so I took matters into my own hands. Since I was vegan and eating pretty healthy, I thought about possible culprits. Maybe its gluten? Or maybe its soy? So I eliminated those, but that didnt do a thing. I even tried taking probiotics , but after two months, nothing changed.

How To Diagnose A Fodmap Intolerance

The best way to diagnose a FODMAP intolerance is to simply cut all high-FODMAP foods out of your diet for a while and see what happens to your digestion.

If you see a significant improvement, there is a good chance you are intolerant to at least some FODMAP foods.

After about 6 weeks of elimination, you can start adding potential problem foods back into your diet one by one. Add a single food for 3-4 days and see how your digestion reacts. If everything is still ok, then you can probably tolerate onions.

Just be aware that FODMAP foods are accumulative. Its possible you can be ok with small amounts of some FODMAP foods but have problems if you eat several of them together or in larger amounts.

It definitely takes a while to figure out what you can and cannot tolerate, but its so worth it!

If you arent sure how to do an elimination diet, it is generally recommended that you do it in collaboration with a dietitian to ensure that you get all the nutrition you need.

    What Causes Bloating In Females

Does your stomach feel bloated around the time of your period? Oestrogen has a big role in deciding how women retain water.

Levels of this hormone fluctuate during a womans monthly cycle, with the body typically retaining more water when oestrogen is higher in the week or so leading up to the start of a period.

As a result, a common symptom of premenstrual syndrome is bloating.

Pain during urination is on the list of typical UTI symptoms, but other types of pain often arent mentioned because theyre less common. An uncomplicated urinary tract infection may cause mild to moderate suprapubic pain, a type of pain that most patients experience as a feeling of pressure or discomfort just above the public bone.

You may also experience a more generalized pelvic pain or cramping in your abdomen. Short-lived pelvic pain may occur during your infection. It can also turn into chronic pain after the infection clears up.

When your infection travels from the bladder to your kidneys, you can develop flank pain, or pain thats felt in your side. Flank pain arises as the infection causes swelling in the kidneys. When that happens, youll experience a steady, aching pain.

Gastroparesis Affects 12 To 15% Of People Living With Diabetes

    What is gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis is a condition when the stomach takes a long time to empty its contents into the small intestine. It is also referred to as delayed gastric emptying, gastric stasis, slow stomach, lazy stomach, and diabetic enteropathy. It usually occurs in people who have been living with diabetes for at least 10 years, and typically presents together with complications of the eye, kidney and others linked to the nervous system.

Normally, when food is swallowed, the muscles in the stomach wall help break the food down into smaller pieces, pushing it into the small intestine to continue digestion. This action is controlled by the vagus nerve, part of the so-called autonomic nervous system, which automatically regulates many bodily functions such as breathing and heart rhythm. If the vagus nerve is damaged or stops working, the muscles in the stomach and intestines do not function normally, and the movement of food stops or slows down. If the food stays in the stomach too long, the food ferments and causes an overgrowth of gas-producing bacteria.

o while your gut is trying to process the meal youve just eaten, stress hormones mean your body is trying to divert blood away from the gut and into the muscles as part of the fight or flight response.

The result? Bloating, indigestion, pain, nausea and maybe even IBS.

How Much Sugar Should You Be Eating

Too much sugar intake is typical in the Western diet. High sugar consumption has been linked to many chronic diseases, including obesity, Type II Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, fatty liver disease and more.

The American Heart Association recommends a maximum amount of added sugar for males around 9 teaspoons or 37.5 grams per day and for females around 6 teaspoons or 25 grams per day.

More Advice To Beat The Bloat:

    1. Eat fermented food once a day: Foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, kefir and kombucha are naturally high in probiotics. Like the probiotic supplement, fermented foods introduce good microorganisms that can contribute to maintaining a balanced, healthy gut.

    2. Drink up: When youre dehydrated, your electrolyte levels can become unbalanced. This means you could be holding on to unwanted water weight without even realizing it. Drinking more water does not mean more water is retained. Drinking more water means your body can flush out any excess more easily.

    3. Move more: You can be eating the right foods, but if youre spending all day sitting, the stagnation can cause unwanted gas buildup. Make a point to get up and move every hour.

Breakfast: 1 cup green tea with an egg scramble with leftover grilled salmon and asparagus

Snack:Gut health smoothie: 1/2 cup plain kefir, 1/3 cup papaya and 1/4 avocado

Lunch: Spinach , 2 teaspoons olive oil and top with 1 tablespoon of chopped pecans and 4-6 ounces lemon herb chicken

Dinner: Large romaine lettuce salad with carrots, tomatoes and red bell peppers top with simple lemon dressing roasted fennel, sweet potato fries and 4-6 ounces parchment baked salmon

Drink flat water with lemon throughout the day!

    How Is Gastroparesis Treated

Gastroparesis is a chronic condition. This means that treatment usually doesnt cure the disease, but can help manage your symptoms. People who have diabetes should try to manage their blood glucose levels to reduce the problems of gastroparesis.

Some people may benefit from medications, including:

    • Reglan: You take this drug before you eat, and it causes your stomach muscles to contract to help move food out of your stomach. Reglan also helps cut down on vomiting and nausea. Side effects include diarrhea and, rarely, a serious neurological disorder.
    • Erythromycin: This is an antibiotic that also causes stomach contractions and helps move food out. Side effects include diarrhea and development of resistant bacteria from taking the antibiotic for a long time.
    • Antiemetics: These are drugs that help manage nausea.

    Surgery for gastroparesis

People with gastroparesis who still have nausea and vomiting even after taking medications may benefit from surgery. One type of surgery for gastroparesis is gastric electrical stimulation, which is a treatment that sends mild electric shocks to your stomach muscles. In this procedure, your provider inserts a small device called a gastric stimulator into your abdomen. The stimulator has two leads that are attached to your stomach and provide mild electric shocks, which help manage vomiting. Your provider can adjust the strength of the electric shocks. The device runs on a battery that lasts up to 10 years.
