A Note From Cleveland Clinic

Emergency IBS Treatment for Flare-Ups to RELIEVE BLOATING, Abdominal PAIN and PELVIC FLOOR Problems

Although pelvic floor dysfunction is a common condition, it can be embarrassing to discuss your pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms especially your bowel movements. The good news is that many pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms are easy to treat.

If you think you might have pelvic floor dysfunction, make sure you see your provider early, especially if you have pain when going to the bathroom. Remember, the more open and honest you are with your provider, the better your treatment will be.

Where Can It Occur

It may occur on the front wall of the vagina, back wall of the vagina, the uterus or top of the vagina.

  • Prolapse of the front wall of the vagina -This is the most common and involves the bladder and /or urethra bulging into the vagina
  • Prolapse of the back wall of the vagina This is when the lower part of the large bowel bulges into the back wall of the vagina and/or part of the small intestine bulges into the upper part of the back wall of the vagina
  • Uterine prolapse This occurs when the uterus drops or herniates into the vagina. This is the second most common form
  • Vaginal vault prolapse Following a hysterectomy, the top of the vagina may collapse downwards, towards or out of the vagina

How Does Pelvic Organ Prolapse Affect The Body

With a pelvic organ prolapse, one or more of a woman’s pelvic organs drop or push into her vaginal canal. Sometimes the organ protrudes out of the vagina as well. A prolapse is caused by a failure of weakened or damaged pelvic muscles, ligaments and connective tissue. The organs and structures that can be affected include the vagina, uterus, cervix, bladder, urethra, rectum and small intestine. Depending on the severity of the prolapse and the organ affected, the effects on the body can be minor and cause few or no symptoms or they can be severe enough to cause pain, urinary or bowel incontinence and other complications.

When To Go To The Hospital

Most of the time hemorrhoids can be managed by your primary care physician. A few situations exist that may require that instead you to go to the hospital emergency department.

If you have considerable pain, bleeding, or a prolapsed hemorrhoid and are unable to get in touch with your doctor, then you should be evaluated in the emergency department.

If you have a large amount of bleeding from your rectum, become weak, or experience lightheadedness you should be evaluated in the emergency department.

Simethicone and Charcoal The use of gas-reducing agents, such as simethicone and charcoal, to relieve bloating is widespread, but the evidence to support their efficacy is limited. When used alone, simethicone has been inefficacious, and the effects of activated charcoal have been inconsistent.118,119 There is a suggestion that gas-related discomfort is reduced with a combination of simethicone and loperamide.120,121 Likewise, the combination of simethicone, activated charcoal, and magnesium oxide significantly reduced bloating in patients with functional dyspepsia.122 The evidence to support the use of any of these agents alone in reducing bloating is insufficient, but there may be some benefit in combination.

Kiwifruit Extract There is emerging evidence that kiwifruit is effective in the treatment of constipation and bloating. Although the mechanisms remain unknown, kiwifruit appears to promote both laxation and gastric motility.123 Kiwifruit extract has had promising results for the treatment of constipation in randomized, placebo-controlled trials. A statistically significant reduction in bloating was noted in a study of patients with occasional constipation.124

Is It Ibs Or Popby Sherrie Palm

Every year countless women are given a diagnosis of IBS many of them after inconclusive test results. Despite the fact that half of all women over fifty as well as countless younger women from childbearing age and up suffer from POP , tests and exams to accurately diagnose this health issue are seldom recommended. We all want a name to put to the symptoms we are experiencing we all want clarification that those symptoms are not in our heads. Many of us do our best to utilize the diets, medications, and behavior modifications our physicians recommend, trying to find some relief for the discomfort we have to deal with daily. Pelvic organ prolapse is an extremely common female health condition that has many overlapping symptoms with IBS. What will it take to bring POP out of the closet?

A rectocele is 1 of 5 types of POP a bulge type pocket occurs in the rectum and pushes into the rear vaginal wall. Fecal matter gets stuck in this bulge, resulting in relentless, long term constipation. No amount of fiber eating is going to help much to level this type of constipation. Women will find it extremely difficult to have a bowel movement often after much pushing and straining a small amount of stool will come out but it will not be a complete bowel movement. You are left with a continual sensation of fullness and the urge to have a bowel movement is there nearly all the time.

Is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Different For Men And Women

There are different pelvic conditions that are unique to men and women.

Pelvic floor dysfunction in men:

Every year, millions of men around the world experience pelvic floor dysfunction. Because the pelvic floor muscles work as part of the waste and reproductive systems during urination and sex, pelvic floor dysfunction can co-exist with many other conditions affecting men, including:

  • Male urinary dysfunction: This condition can involve leaking urine after peeing, running to the bathroom and other bladder and bowel issues.
  • Erectile Dysfunction : ED is when men cant get or maintain an erection during sex. Sometimes pelvic muscle tension or pain is the cause, but ED is a complex condition so this may not be the case.
  • Prostatitis: Pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms closely resemble prostatitis, which is an infection or inflammation of the prostate . Prostatitis can have many causes including bacteria, sexually transmitted infections or trauma to the nervous system.

Pelvic floor dysfunction in women:

Pelvic floor dysfunction can interfere with a womans reproductive health by affecting the uterus and vagina. Women who get pelvic floor dysfunction may also have other symptoms like pain during sex.

Warning Signs Of Ovarian Cysts You Should Not Ignore

Ovarian cysts are solid or fluid-filled sacs that form within your ovaries. Many women develop ovarian cysts at some point in their lives. These cysts typically form during ovulation, which is the time during your monthly cycle when one of your ovaries releases an egg.

Ovarian cysts sometimes cause pain and other symptoms, but sometimes they dont cause any symptoms at all. Often cysts form and then go away on their own in a few weeks or in one to three months.

Although most ovarian cysts are benign meaning they are not cancerous in rare cases cysts are a sign of ovarian cancer. For this reason, its always wise to tell your doctor about any symptoms that might suggest the presence of ovarian cysts.

Dr. Susan Crockett and her team of health care providers at Virtuosa GYN recommend calling our office for a checkup if you experience any of the following 10 warning signs of ovarian cysts.

Things That Can Make Your Prolapse Worse

Many women experience some degree of Pelvic Organ Prolapse in their lives, whether mild or severe.

In most cases, the prolapse is mild and doesnt require surgery and can be treated with pelvic floor strengthening exercises. However, the prolapse can get worse if you are not careful and you may end up need more than just Kegels .

Heres a list of 15 things that can make your prolapse worse:

Over time, your entire body becomes weaker and your muscles and bones degenerate. This is not unique to the pelvic floor, but it is a factor that can make your prolapse worse.

Studies have shown that 37% of women who suffer from pelvic floor related disorders are between the ages of 60 and 79. Nearly 50% of these women are over 80.

Smoking doesnt only lead to lung cancer and gum disease. It can also initiate Pelvic Organ Prolapse or cause it to worsen significantly.

This happens largely because of smokers cough which puts way more pressure on the pelvic floor than a regular cough. Smokers cough is the bodys way of removing the chemicals and toxins in cigarettes from the body. When one smokes heavily, the tiny hair-like structure in the lungs that are responsible for removing these toxins become weaker. The bodys response is to cough more violently and increase phlegm production.

Being overweight doesnt just put you at risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Remember that thing called Gravity? Well, it does play a role in your prolapse. Heres how:

Diseases Causing Increased Gas

Most people with gas-related symptoms have increased sensitivity to gas or have one of the causes of increased gas production mentioned above. However, occasionally these symptoms can be caused by diseases of the bowel. Sometimes, the illness can be short-lived. For example, acute gastroenteritis , often caused by infection with a virus, can result in a short-term condition associated with increased gas.

Occasionally, gas-related symptoms can be features of long-term diseases. All of them can cause at least one gas-related symptom .

Examples include:

Coeliac diseaseCoeliac disease is caused by intolerance to a protein called gluten which is found in certain foods containing wheat, barley and rye. It principally affects the part of the gut called the small intestine. It can occur at any age. Symptoms are relieved by avoiding gluten-containing foods. See the separate leaflet called Coeliac Disease.

DiverticulitisDiverticulitis occurs when small pouches in the wall of the large bowel become infected. See the separate leaflet called Diverticula .

Short bowel syndromeShort bowel syndrome can be a complication of bowel surgery. If more than half the small bowel is removed during surgery this can cause difficulties in food absorption.

GiardiasisThis is caused by infection with a germ calledà giardia. One of the symptoms is belching up foul-smelling gas.

What Are The Symptoms Of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Some women notice nothing at all, but others report these symptoms with pelvic organ prolapse:

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area

  • A feeling that something is falling out of the vagina
  • Urinary problems such as leaking of urine or a chronic urge to urinate
