Monash University has lab tested several fruity spreads:
- Strawberry Jammade with no high fructose corn syrup: Low FODMAP at 2 Australian tablespoons or 40 g.
- Strawberry Jam made with high fructose corn syrup: Low FODMAP at ½ Australian tablespoon or 10 g.
- Raspberry Jam: Low FODMAP at 2 Australian tablespoons or 40 g. Moderate for FODMAPs at 45 g.
- : Low FODMAP at 2 Australian tablespoons or 40 g. Looks like orange marmalade, but Monash has not confirmed.
- Blueberry Jam: High FODMAP at 1 tablespoon .
- Mixed Berries Jam: Moderate for FODMAPs at 1 Australian tablespoon or 20 g High FODMAP at 2 Australian tablespoons or 40 g. Monash has not confirmed what the blend is.

Today were throwing it back to my grad school days. This recipe is inspired by one of several that I created back when I was juggling IBS , my nutrition thesis, two jobs, and a three-hour commute. Yay!
With a jam-packed schedule, I frequently turned to easy-to-make recipes that could be packed for 16-hour days away from home. Luckily, my then-boyfriend Al gifted me a food processor for my birthday and I quickly discovered the amazingness of oatmeal energy bites.
Some call them energy balls, I prefer to call them bites, but whatever you call them, there are hundreds of variations out there. Theyre super popular because theyre easy-to-make, many are no-bake, and can be customized based on your taste preferences and nutritional needs.
Todays version uses rolled oats, peanut butter, cocoa powder, maple syrup, chia seeds, and mini chocolate chips for a yummy chocolate-y peanut butter combination. With the help of a food processor, I can have a batch whipped up in a matter of seconds and, if Im in a hurry, the balls rolled up and in the freezer in about 10.

How To Make Low Fodmap Peanut Butter & Jelly Bars
Preheat the oven to 350°F . Coat a 9 by 13-inch cake pan with nonstick spray, then line with parchment paper overhanging two sides. Coat the parchment paper with nonstick spray and dust lightly with extra flour.
Whisk together the 2 ¾ cups flour, salt and baking powder in a small bowl to aerate and combine.
Beat in vanilla, then eggs and peanut butter and continue beating until mixture is well blended and smooth.
Beat in flour mixture on low speed, just until combined.
Spread about two-thirds of the dough into the prepared cake pan, creating an even layer .
Spread the jam evenly over the dough.
Drop small bits of the remaining dough evenly over the jam it is okay if the jam peeks through here and there, but try to make it as evenly covered as possible.
Sprinkle with chopped peanuts, if using.
Bake for about 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. A toothpick inserted in the center will come out with a few crumbs clinging .
Cool on a rack completely before cutting into 40 bars .
Your Low FODMAP PB& J Bars are ready to serve or store in single layers, separated by parchment, at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 4 days. They can also be frozen for up to a month. Double wrap in plastic wrap, then slip into a zip top bag.

Use The Ingredients Called For
While this recipe uses many typical ingredients, like butter, brown sugar and eggs, when baking you must pay attention to details to get the results as presented.
For instance, our baking recipes always call for unsalted butter. You might think that subbing in salted butter is an easy swap and that you could just reduce the salt in the recipe, but believe it or not salted butter and unsalted butter can contain different amounts of water and moisture. Also, salt, being a preservative, means that salted butter has a longer shelf life and might be older. Since we often use butter for a fresh dairy flavor, this would be contrary to that goal.

Is Almond Butter Low Fodmap
Monash University has lab tested almond butter and it has a lab tested low FODMAP amount of 1 Australian tablespoonat 20 g. The image shows a very smooth product and does not look like a natural style, but they will not confirm. Almond butter becomes Moderate for FODMAPs at 1 ½ Australian tablespoons or 32 g. .
FODMAP Friendly has lab tested what they call Almond Spread. It looks like a processed product but the look of the image and not natural almond butter. It gets a Pass at 10 g, which is a very small amount, and they specify that GOS and fructans are present.
What is curious is that this doesnt quite jibe with their entry for almonds, which get a Pass at ¼ cup or 30 g. For this amount, GOS, fructans and sorbitol are listed as present.

If you are still suffering from abdominal pain and other IBS symptoms despite being low FODMAP, then its time to double check your diet and look at your stress levels. The low FODMAP diet is a learning diet and it can take a few weeks to change your food habits to make sure you arent eating high FODMAP foods. Additionally, even though many people experience symptom relief in the first couple of weeks, it can take longer for your body to adjust. Before you give up and decide the diet doesnt work for you, there are a few things you need to check:
1. Ignoring recommended portion sizes for low FODMAP foods
2. Consuming sneaky FODMAPs in processed foods, supplements & medications
Manufacturers often add high FODMAP ingredients to processed foods to enhance their texture and taste. Some common examples are inulin, chicory root, agave syrup, HFCS, sorbitol , mannitol , maltitol , xylitol , and isomalt. The FODMAP content of most pharmaceutical tablets should not be high enough to cause any issues. However if you are having cough syrup, throat lozenges, or liquid suspensions that contain sugar alcohols then these could be making your symptoms worse. Also check your supplements and probiotics, as these can contain inulin, which is high FODMAP even in small amounts. Chewable supplements can also contain lactose, fructose, or sugar alcohols so read the ingredients carefully.

Butter And Dairy Products
As I stated above, many dairy products contain lactose including milk. Butter is made from milk, so why is it low in lactose?
During the process of making butter, cream is separated from fresh milk and beaten until thickened.4 Extra liquid is drained off and the remaining product is mostly fat .4 If you look on the nutrition facts table you can see that there is just fat and perhaps some salt, but no carbohydrates/sugar or protein. Since we know that lactose is a sugar, we can see from the nutrition facts table that there is no lactose left.
Similarly, if you see milk fat in an ingredients list, you can know that it wont add lactose to the product since it is just fat.
Cheese is also low in lactose, but some varieties contain more lactose than others. For example, 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella is low in lactose.5 Ricotta has more lactose but is still low at 2 tablespoons.5 It is called the Low FODMAP Diet and not the no FODMAP diet for a reason.
