Picking out a yogurt is overwhelming. So Im here to help. I scoured four different grocery stores and took pictures of what was actually on the shelves so I could review relevant brands. First, Ill let in you in on what Im looking for when I pick up a yogurt. Then Ill give you my reviews for 15 commonly found yogurts.

Is Frozen Yogurt As Nutritious As Regular Yogurt

Frozen yogurt, for example, contains more calories from sugar and less calcium and magnesium than the same amount of yogurt. As you can see, plain yogurt has a higher nutritional value than frozen yogurt and also has fewer calories. The extra calories in frozen yogurt are due to the flavors and sweeteners added to the frozen treat.

It depends.

Live bacterial cultures are added to milk to start the fermentation process that turns milk in to yogurt.

These fermentation bacteria are called starter cultures and Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are the most commonly used to make yogurt.

Based on that fact, you would think all yogurt is probiotic.

I can see companies saying made with but forgetting the but we killed them all part.

Unfortunately, most regular yogurt brands are pasteurized after fermentation. The heat kills off the beneficial bacteria so there no longer probiotic.

Yogurt can contain live and active cultures as long as its not been heat treated or bacteria has been added after fermentation.

How Long Do Probiotics Last

Most probiotic supplements indicate a shelf life on their label of about one year. According to regulations, this means that the number of probiotics present in the supplement at the time of manufacturing must remain the same until they reach that expiry date.

Unfortunately, probiotics are very sensitive to environmental conditions, and elements like heat and light can kill them in both supplements and food. This means that if the product has been handled improperly during transportation, or if you stored it incorrectly, the probiotics may no longer be living.

Expired probiotics will not harm you, however you will not experience their benefits if they are expired.

The difficulty is that labelling regulations require manufacturers to put the total number of probiotics on their container, but this weight could include both the living and dead microorganisms.

You might purchase a product that claims it contains 10 billion live bacterial cultures, but there is no good way of knowing whether or not those bacteria are alive or dead. For this reason, researchers at Harvard Health Publishing recommend skipping the supplement altogether and getting your daily dose of probiotics from fermented foods like yogurt.

Best Probiotic Yogurts In Canada

Not all yogurts are considered probiotic. In order to simply be yogurt, the product must contain the strains S. thermophilus or L. bulgaricus. These strains, however, are not considered probiotics by Health Canada.

In order to be a probiotic yogurt, at least 1 billion live colony-forming units of probiotic strains pre-approved by Health Canada must be added during manufacturing. As mentioned above, read labels carefully and look for yogurts that add other strains of probiotics into their products.

Tools and Ingredients Required:

  • ½ gallon raw, grass-fed milk from cows, sheep or goat*
  • Mesophilic yogurt cultures

*Can substitute pasteurized milk if desired

Note: This is a two-day process

  • First, test the temperature of slow cooker. Add ½ gallon tap water to your slow cooker, and turn on low for 2 ½ hours. Use your food thermometer to check temperature. If the water is above 115 degrees F, its too high, and it will essentially kill the raw milks healthy bacteria. If youre not using raw milk, above 115 degrees F is OK. If the heat of the water is between 110115 degrees F, you are free to proceed.
  • Unplug the slow cooker and allow to cool to room temperature. Dump out the water and dry. Add the dairy milk of choice, cover with the lid and turn on low. Set a timer for 2 ½ hours. Turn off slow cooker, and unplug it. Do not remove the lid to peek! Allow milk to remain in the slow cooker, lid in place, for 3 hours.
  • Remove 2 cups of the milk to a stainless bowl, and add the starter culture according to the instructions. Mix thoroughly and pour back into the crock, and replace the lid. Immediately wrap the unplugged crock in towels , and let set for 1824 hours undisturbed. This is the culturing period.
  • After 1824 hours, remove from the slow cooker by filling clean, dry jars. Seal and refrigerate for at least 68 hours. While cooling, the yogurt will continue to thicken. Yogurt made from raw dairy will not be as thick as conventionally made yogurt available in the store.

    What Is Probiotic Yogurt

    MacNeil explains that all yogurt in Canada is made with the bacteria Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, however these bacteria are not recognized as probiotics by Health Canada.

    Some yogurt manufacturers will add pre-approved probiotic strains, she explains. To be called a probiotic food, yogurt must contain at least one billion live colony-forming units of a recognized probiotic species per serving.

    In order to benefit from probiotics, you need to consume at least 100 million colony-forming units each day.

    There are a few other details you should look for on a yogurt label when considering which brand to purchase. MacNeill suggests looking for a yogurt with a short ingredients list, citing that less is often more.

    For example, Nancys Organic plain yogurt contains just three ingredients: Organic pasteurized whole milk, organic pasteurized nonfat milk, and live yogurt cultures.

    Overall, she says that yogurt should be a good source of protein without providing excess added sugars or artificial sweeteners. If you are looking to increase your protein intake, she recommends Greek yogurt, since it is strained twice and is therefore higher in protein.

    The only downside to Greek yogurt, however, is that the straining process removes some of the calcium. If youre trying to increase your calcium intake, MacNeill recommends looking for a yogurt that provides at least 15% of the daily value of calcium.

    The National Yogurt Association’s Live & Active Cultures seal was devised to help consumers identify yogurt products containing at least 100 million live microbes per gram at the time of manufacture.

    The LAC seal can also be displayed on frozen yogurt products containing a minimum of 10 million live cultures per gram.

    However, the seal doesn’t discriminate between starter cultures and probiotics. Therefore, yogurts containing only L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus can also display the seal.

    The LAC seal is voluntary and expensive. That’s why many smaller manufacturers don’t display it, even if their product contains a sufficient amount of live active cultures.

    If there’s no LAC seal or quantity of CFU’s on the label check it lists the specific strains.
