A Note About Observational Studies
When looking at the research on coffee, it is important to understand the different types of research studies. In this case, these are observational studies vs. randomized clinical trials .;
RCTs are considered the best type of research, as they control for all factors and seek to find the exact reasons why and how something may be helping or causing harm. In a randomized clinical trial , participants are randomly put into a very specific and controlled environment in which to test a medication or lifestyle intervention.
Observational studies or reviews of literature look at self-reported correlations in the population. For example, many people with IBS report that drinking coffee triggers diarrhea. However, an observational study does not investigate the mechanism of action, or exactly how and why, coffee triggers an IBS flare-up.;
Similarly, observational studies may find that those who regularly consume coffee also have a lower risk of developing a certain kind of disease. But this doesnt necessarily mean that coffee directly reduces disease risk it simply points to an association.;
These observational studies should not be discounted. They can help guide researchers to discover what they may want to do a clinical trial on. These studies also assist other IBS sufferers by letting them know that cutting coffee may help decrease symptoms, even if we do not know why yet. Still, its always important to take these findings with a grain of salt.;

Coffee : Giving It Up To See If Gut Health Improves Any Experiences
I have been a coffee drinker for the past 16 years. I tried to quit a couple times in that time, but always went back. I had tried to quit due to what seemed like adrenal issues and trouble sleeping. It resolved and I went back to the coffee drinking. I enjoy coffee very much and it’s something I look forward to every morning. I have been wondering these past couple years if coffee has anything to do with my worsening food intolerances and other GI issues. It’s the only thing I have kept doing consistently.
I am planning to ween off of the coffee with yerba mate in the mornings instead.
Also curious if I have low digestive enzymes and if drinking coffee is the cause or making it worse. I will update often. Thanks for reading.

What Causes A Leaky Gut
The exact cause of increased intestinal permeability is unknown but as our environment has become more processed and hygienic there has been an increase in autoimmune disease. Inside the human body is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms composed of viruses, bacteria, and fungi, all of which collectively constitute whats called the human gut microbiome. Balance and biodiversity in the gut microbiome create health. Imbalance and reduced diversity in this ecosystem create disease.
The gut microbiome protects us from dangerous bacteria, regulates our metabolism, aids in digestion, creates vitamins, manages hormone levels, disposes of toxins, feeds, and protects the lining of the gut and our immunity. Our relationship with our microbiome ecosystem is symbiotic. We provide a home for these microorganisms and give them food. In return, these organisms serve us in many ways
Our gut microbes help produce short-chain fatty acids to maintain the strength and integrity of our gut lining. The short-chain fatty acids are involved in regulating your immune system, healing, combating inflammation and may help protect you against cancer and many other diseases. There is a strong correlation between a weak intestinal lining and autoimmune diseases.

Experiment With Different Brews To Find The One You Like Best
Amounts up to 400 mg of caffeine per day appear to be safe for most adults .5 But a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that high coffee consumption was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, though unrelated to genetic factors in metabolizing caffeine.6
Ultimately, its to each their own. A cup or two of coffee in the morning is likely an indulgence you can afford without any negative health effects. But everyone is different.
If you find coffee difficult to tolerate if it makes your heart race, makes you jittery, or interrupts your sleep consider switching to herbal tea, vegetable juice, or another nourishing beverage.
Is Caffeine Bad For You
Natural forms of caffeine, such as tea and coffee, can improve your gut health and give you an extra boost of energy. But consuming too much caffeine can also lead to uncomfortable symptoms. And in severe cases, medical complications.
Caffeine intake is cautioned for children and adolescents, pregnant women, and individuals diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions.
Consuming caffeine in moderation is your best bet. Coffee, tea, and dark chocolate represent healthy sources of caffeine. On the other hand, energy drinks are often filled with high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and added chemicals that can have harmful side effects.
Most likely, adding caffeine to your diet wont make or break your gut health. But lifestyle modifications like eating a plant-based diet, exercising regularly, and getting a good nights rest can go a long way towards promoting a healthy gut.

Is Sucralose Safe To Put In Coffee
For those concerned about gut health, its worth paying attention to studies that have found a link between inflammation, a reduction in healthy gut bacteria, and sucralose.
Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of Get Off Your Sugar: Burn the Fat, Crush Your Cravings, and Go From Stress Eating to Strength Eating , says thats because sucralose isnt fully broken down during the digestion process. It arrives in your large intestine fully intact; your gut bacteria feast on it and die. It also accumulates in your fat cells, he writes in the book.
Gioffre says one study found that sucralose can reduce healthy gut bacteria by up to 50 percent and that can lead to a nasty case of leaky gut syndrome. And while sugar itself hasnt been found to have that specific effect, Dr. Gioffre doesnt recommend replacing sucralose with sugar even natural sugar or any other artificial sweetener.
Sugar and artificial sweeteners are the most toxic offenders of the gut because they destroy the terrain, he told SheFinds. Sugar breaks down to lactic acid, which is highly inflammatory and corrosive to your stomach and entire microbiome.
When Adding Back Potential Allergens Or Common Food Intolerances:
- Avoid Dairy, commercial cows milk, wheat and gluten contain foods, corn, Soy, legumes, nuts, eggs, legumes, nuts, eggs.
A class of vegetables that may trigger an immune response in some individuals: White potatoes, Tomatoes, Eggplant, and peppers.
Reintroduce one new food at a time for three to four days.
Allowing 5-7 days before reintroducing a different food. This allows enough time to notice if any symptoms occur. As you reintroduce foods, continue to keep a journal that includes:
- Record food and beverage consumed.
- Time of day
- and how you feel for up to 2 days after adding that food.
- Include type and severity of symptom.
Step one: Choose one new food to reintroduce. Plan to consume this food a few times a day on the testing day and then avoid it for 5-7 days.
Step two. Eat a small amount of the food you are reintroducing. Wait 15 minutes to see if you have a reaction.
Step three: If you experience any symptoms, end the reintroductions, and avoid this food. If you have no symptoms eat a slightly larger portion of the same food and monitor how you feel over 2-3 hours.
Step four: If you experience any symptoms over this period, end the test and avoid this food. If no symptoms occur, eat a normal portion of the same food and then avoid it for 5-6 days without reintroducing any other foods.
Step five: If you experience no symptoms for 5-6 days you may reincorporate the tested food into your diet.
Follow the same steps for each food.

It Acidifies Your Body
The high acid in coffee will contribute to heart burn and reflux and have a negative cascading effect on metabolism, hormone balance, mineral absorption, bladder health, blood pressure and inflammation.
So if coffee is out, what should you drink instead? Replace it with something that comforts or energizes you, so you dont miss it as much.
Tea is hot, comforting and caffeinated. The caffeine in tea can help move bowels. It also has many healing properties to speed your healing process and address pathogens. It has more antioxidants than coffee.
You can lower your coffee consumption slowly. Reduce by half and replace it with tea. Keep reducing and replacing slowly until you are drinking only tea.
Keep You From Absorbing Minerals
Coffee lowers levels of calming minerals such as calcium and magnesium. It does this by blocking your bodys ability to absorb magnesium from foods or in supplement form.
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency are anxiety, agitation, muscle spasms, tremors, twitches and irregular heart beat. Symptoms that are aggravated by caffeine consumption.
Also, the diuretic effect of coffee causes the loss of 10 mg of calcium per cup of coffee.

How To Enjoy L

Leaky gut could be the cause of some health problems, or a sign of something larger, says Dr. Fasano. The science is still up in the air. For example, digestive conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and Crohns disease share many of the same symptoms as leaky gut, and all are linked with chronic inflammation, but its not known how, or if, they are connected.
The challenge is that its difficult to measure the strength of a persons gut barrier, so you cant know for certain when leaky gut is really present, or what influence it may have elsewhere in the body, says Dr. Fasano.

Thyroid autoimmune disease.
The two major thyroid diseases, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, are most likely caused by autoimmune disease. As of now, there is the most evidence surrounding Hashimotos thyroiditis, which is the leading cause of hypothyroidism . While we dont know whether coffee is related to the onset and progression of this disease, we do know that coffee interrupts treatment with levothyroxine: taking this medication with coffee leads to decreased absorption AND longer time to reach peak blood levels. Yikes!
Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Multiple sclerosis .
MS is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that causes progressive neurological deterioration. Interestingly, diets high in coffee are inversely associated with MS development, so coffee consumption may; be protective!

My Broken Ankle Analogy
Broken ankle- rest and elevation before physical rehabilitation.
Leaky gut- eat a cleaner, softer, nourishing diet to lessen inflammation and promote healing.
Normally, daily exercise is essential for optimal health, and it is encouraged. However, if you have suffered from an injury, such as a fractured ankle, the immediate treatment would be different. You may need to rest, elevate, not put any pressure on it. The priority is to ensure healing first.
With leaky gut, our diet is more restricted because we are removing any potentially harmful agents and allowing healing to take place first before re-introducing back some of the good foods . This is time to heal and relearn what foods are well tolerated.
The best diet for you is the one that makes you feel the best. Keeping a daily food journal/notebook and documenting the food consumed, time of day and how you feel is important. Keep in mind that digestion can take 1-2 days. See more under removal phase diet heading.
