Zofran is an antiemetic and the brand name for the drug Ondansetron, which is a form of medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting mostly caused by the treatment for cancer or surgery. It is also used in the treatment of gastroenteritis.

It can be administered orally, intravenously, or injected into the muscle. It may side effects that include headache, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, and constipation. People at high risk of heart issues should be aware that Ondansetron can cause QT prolongation, affecting the heart rhythm. That is why before taking this medication, the doctor or medical practitioner should be aware of all the medication the patient is undergoing.

Getting The Most From Your Treatment

  • Ondansetron should start to work within an hour or so. If you are taking tablets or liquid medicine and you are sick within one hour of taking a dose, you should take the same dose again. This does not apply, however, if you are using suppositories or if you have been given an injection, as being sick will not prevent these from being absorbed by your body.
  • Even if you do not feel like eating or drinking, try to sip water regularly to prevent you from becoming lacking in fluids . Also, rather than trying to eat three main meals a day, try eating small, simple but nourishing snacks, every few hours.

Serotonin syndrome is a drug-induced condition that occurs when serotonin levels in the brain get too high, causing the brain to become overstimulated. Symptoms are usually mild and last for only a few days, but the most severe cases can be life-threatening. In most cases, serotonin syndrome is brought on by taking more than one drug that affects serotonin levels. However, ondansetron and similar drugs5-HT3 receptor antagonists including granisetron and dolasetroncan cause serotonin syndrome when taken alone. The exact incidence is not known, but get medical help at any sign of serotonin syndrome such as:

How Should This Medicine Be Used

Ondansetron comes as a tablet, a rapidly disintegrating tablet, film, and an oral solution to take by mouth. The first dose of ondansetron is usually taken 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy, 1 to 2 hours before the start of radiation therapy, or 1 hour before surgery. Additional doses are sometimes taken one to three times a day during chemotherapy or radiation therapy and for 1 to 2 days after the end of treatment. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take ondansetron exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Do not chew the film.

If you are taking the rapidly disintegrating tablet, remove the tablet from the package just before you take your dose. To open the package, do not try to push the tablet through the foil backing of the blister. Instead, use dry hands to peel back the foil backing. Gently remove the tablet and immediately place the tablet on the top of your tongue. The tablet will dissolve in a few seconds and can be swallowed with saliva.

Treating A Stomach Bug

Dehydration may become a serious concern for people who have the stomach virus. Watch for the symptoms of dehydration. You should seek medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.

Make sure you get plenty of fluids. Adults can drink fluids such as Gatorade with electrolytes, and children can also drink fluid replacement solutions such as Pedialyte. These drinks coupled with water will help restore the bodys hydration balance. For best results, drink a few sips every half hour to an hour.

Dont drink sugary drinks like Kool-Aid or sodas, as these liquids dont replace lost electrolytes. Taking in ice chips or drinking plain water is another good option for staying hydrated.

Once you feel ready to eat again, give your stomach a break by slowly introducing bland foods into your diet. These may include:

  • cereals
  • symptoms of dehydration, including fatigue and extreme thirst
  • symptoms of botulism
  • symptoms of food poisoning after visiting a developing country

If you have a mild case of food poisoning, it may respond well to rest and fever-reducing medications. If you have a severe case, you may need to be admitted to the hospital for intravenous fluid hydration. If you have severe bacterial food poisoning, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.

Your doctor will review your symptoms and run tests to determine the best course of action.

How To Choose A Product:

  • Determine what is most important to you: cost , formulation , time to have an effect , quality of the product , etc
  • Some products labeled gluten-free actually have gluten in them, because they still meet the FDA definition which allows for up to 20 parts per million.
  • Look at the source of the flavors and dyes to ensure safety during pregnancy
  • Constipation treatment options are limited when you cant swallow, eliminating many options. Since my suggestions are for information only and not in any particular order, start with whichever one you can tolerate. If that doesnt work, then try another option.
  • Many women save the enema as a last resort, and then report its the only effective treatment. Additionally, look for products that are free of dyes and other fillers, if that is important to you.
  • How Should I Give It

Is constipation during pregnancy normal. If so, what can I do about it?

Ondansetron may be given by mouth as a liquid, pill, or tablet or in a vein . It may be given in one of these ways:

    • as needed
    • at regular times
    • continuously through an IV

Your child should be awake and alert when taking any medicine by mouth. Follow the checked instructions below:

___ If using the liquid form, draw up the correct amount in the medicine dropper or oral syringe. Give a small squirt of the medicine inside the cheek. To avoid choking, let your child swallow each squirt before giving more.

___ For babies, you may want to mix the medicine with a small amount of formula or breast milk and give it with a bottle nipple before feeding. Do not add the medicine to a whole bottle because if your baby does not finish it, you will not know how much of the medicine was taken.

___ For older children who cannot swallow pills, a special tablet called Zofran ODT is available. Place it under the tongue and it will dissolve.

    How To Prevent Medication

Not everyone will become constipated when using these medications. However, you should be aware of the possible side effects and what you can do to prevent constipation.

In general, you want to make sure you are well hydrated with water, not coffee or carbonated beverages, says Dr. Curtin. You also want to have a healthy amount of fiber in your diet and try to limit processed foods. It is worth asking your doctor if there are alternative agents. Calcium channel blockers, used for high blood pressure, such as diltiazem, for example, are notorious for causing constipation. If there is another class of medication that can treat the underlying health problem, you should at least be given the option.

Fortunately, there are some relatively simple nonpharmacologic approaches to preventing constipation.

    Eat As Normally As Possible

It used to be advised to âstarveâ for a while if you had food poisoning. However, now it is advised to eat small, light meals if you can. Be guided by your appetite. You may not feel like food and most adults can do without food for a few days. Eat as soon as you are able â but donât stop drinking. If you do feel like eating, avoid fatty, spicy or heavy food at first. Plain foods such as wholemeal bread and rice are good foods to try eating first.

Are There Any Risk Factors For This Medication

Ondansetron should not be used in pets that are allergic to it. It should be used cautiously in pets with gastrointestinal blockage, certain abnormal heart rhythms, or liver disease. Ondansetron should be used with caution in pregnant or lactating pets as safety has not been clearly established.

Some breeds of dogs are more sensitive than others to medications. This is typically due to a specific genetic mutation that makes them less able to tolerate high doses of certain medications. Therefore, ondansetron should be used cautiously in these cases.

Why Can You Eat That Long After Zofran

Ondansetron works in the stomach in a way that restricts the signals to the brain that cause vomiting and nausea. When consumed, the tablets will begin working within half an hour to 2 hours. It takes a little longer than other forms of the same drug to enter into the bloodstream and deliver its effectiveness, and is therefore advised to be taken at least 30 minutes to an hour before any food consumption.

The orally disintegrating tablets, Zofran ODT, are known to be quickly absorbed into the blood and therefore work faster than the tablet. That is why a person needs to wait for a reduced time of 15 minutes before consuming any food. The oral soluble film works in almost the same manner, thereby enabling faster uptake of the medication into the bloodstream, making it equally efficient.

It is a well-known fact that this type of medication works the fastest on empty stomach- which is ideally an hour before food or even 2 hours after food. When consuming any form of Ondansetron, the minimum time taken to allow the medication to have its effect should be the period before which one should not eat any food. This will allow the medication to work effectively and efficiently.

    Warnings For Other Groups

Zofran : Risks Taking Zofran During Pregnancy, Zofran ...

For pregnant women: There havent been enough studies done in humans to be certain how ondansetron might affect a fetus when the mother takes it. Research in animals has not shown a risk to the fetus. However, animal studies do not always predict the way humans would respond.

Talk to your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed.

For women who are breastfeeding: Ondansetron may pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, a higher amount of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

For children: This medication has not been studied in children younger than 4 years. It should not be used in children of this age range.

All possible dosages and drug forms may not be included here. Your dosage, drug form, and how often you take the drug will depend on:

    • your age
    • how severe your condition is
    • other medical conditions you have
    • how you react to the first dose
