Natural heartburn Relief – To Drink Milk or Not to Drink Milk?

Just because you get heartburn when you drink milk kefir does not mean you should stop drinking it. In fact, it probably means that your body needs good bacteria in milk kefir all the more.

What you will need to do is ease into drinking milk kefir slowly. Start off with 1-2 Tbsp of milk kefir a day and slowly work yourself up as you begin to tolerate it better.

If you are having a lot of heartburn, take a break for 2-3 days until your heartburn has subsided, then try again.

The heartburn could also be related to dairy intolerance, but I would only suspect this if you don’t otherwise consume much dairy.

Why Milk Kefir Causes Heartburn

When the consumption of milk kefir causes heartburn, it is most likely a result of introducing good bacteria to an environment where bad bacteria have taken over.

The good bacteria and the bad bacteria cannot live in harmony, and so they begin to wage war within your digestive system. The probiotics from the milk kefir seek to evict the bad bacteria from your gut, which can result in a number of unpleasant symptoms, including heartburn and other Gastrointestinal problems.

This period of adjustment in your digestive system is called gut flora repopulation or gut flora repair, and it can take anywhere from days to months depending on the current state of your digestive system. It can also cause something known as die off in which your body reacts to trying to rid itself of bad bacteria.

Common Symptoms During Gut Flora Repopulation:

  • GI complaints such as heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, etc.
  • Headaches and muscle aches

Because kefir is so much stronger than yogurt, it can cause a much stronger reaction if your stomach is not used to the strains of good bacteria that live in milk kefir.

Eating Certain Foods That Help Prevent Heartburn

High-fiber foods like whole grains and vegetables can help relieve heartburn by making you feel full and preventing you from overeating. Alkaline foods like melons, bananas, cauliflower, fennel, and nuts can offset gastric acid and reduce symptoms of burning chest pain. Watery foods like cucumber, celery, watermelon, herbal teas, and broths can dilute stomach acid and reduce the burning pain associated with heartburn.

But This Summer I Learned That Salad Unfortunately Just May Be My Bodys Enemy

I usually buy lunch every day and, up until a few months ago, my go-to choice was usually one of those build-your-own salad places, where Id load up on kale, avocado, and other raw veggies, topped with an olive oil dressing.

But in the beginning of 2017, I began to notice a strange pattern of bloating.

It started when I was sitting at my desk at work and I realized that my pants did not fit. It felt like I had just finished a Thanksgiving meal: I was fatigued, felt extremely full, and had a full-on muffin top. The kicker? I had only eaten a healthy, protein-rich breakfast and a salad that day. Luckily, I was wearing a long shirt which allowed me to discretely unbutton my pants.

The next day, the same thing happened. This time, I was wearing a loose top and only felt comfortable after I unbuttoned and unzipped my pants.

Some days I would feel like myself, but most of the time it looked like my abdomen had ballooned to almost twice its normal size. Even though I rarely over-ate and worked out regularly, I was never happy with how I looked or felt.

How Yogurt Might Help Heartburn

Can milk soothe heartburn?

When eaten in moderation, yogurt prevents and alleviates heartburn and GERD symptoms in some people. Yogurt is a probiotic food, containing bacteria that are thought to help keep the digestive system healthy. Although more research is needed, some studies indicate that yogurt and probiotic bacteria are beneficial. A small Japanese study published in âPharmaceuticalsâ in June 2014 found that people with persistent heartburn despite use of acid-suppressing drugs experienced GERD symptoms improvement after eating yogurt with probiotic bacteria daily for 3 months. An April 2011 âEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigationâ study noted faster stomach emptying and less reflux associated with use of a probiotic supplement in infants. Itâs unclear, however, if this effect occurs with yogurt consumption.

Is Oat Milk Acidic Or Alkaline

The pH of oat milk is around 5 to 6, so it is acidic. But does it increase the acidity of the stomach as well?

Yes, oat milk encourages acid formation in the body.

Despite all of the health benefits oat milk can provide, you will feel heartburn if you consume it regularly and in more quantity. One cup of oat milk a day is the limit if you want to harness only the health benefits from this milk.

The oat milk pH level varies depending on whether you make it at home or purchase it commercially.

Homemade has higher pH levels than commercially produced. The reason is that companies add artificial sweeteners and preservatives that increase the acidity levels.

If you have heartburn two or more times a week and changes to your diet or eating pattern haven’t helped, consult a doctor. A gastroenterologist can perform tests to measure the acidity in your stomach and see if frequent acid reflux has damaged your esophagus.

GERD is often treatable through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. But persistent symptoms of reflux need thorough evaluation by a gastroenterologist who can find the underlying cause and discuss available treatment options.

Acidic Drinks Or Foods

Acidic foods and drinks can worsen your GERD symptoms or contribute to an acid reflux episode. In addition to some foods discussed above, like coffee, this includes foods such as:

  • Citrus juice, such as orange juice and lemon or lime juice
  • Garlic, onions, and other alliums
  • Mint and mint-flavored foods and drinks

Eat acidic foods only in moderation, if at all, and pay careful attention to how you feel after doing so.

Identifying common triggers, according to information from Harvard Medical School. To do this, pay particular attention to how you feel after eating foods that are spicy, high in fat, or include garlic or tomatoes. Beverages such as milk, coffee, peppermint, chocolate, carbonated drinks can also cause reflux.

If you do eat problematic foods, pop a piece of non peppermint gum after, advises Harvard Medical School. This increases salivation to neutralize acid and alleviates esophageal discomfort.

Eating lat at night can also cause heart burn, says Gastroenterologist Dr. David Poppers, MD, PhD and associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center. He recommends waiting roughly two hours to sleep after eating. And when you do get some rest, sleep in an elevated position. This helps prevent acid from traveling up the esophagus, he says.

If you get heartburn more than twice a week, tell your doctor, Dr. Hyatt says. Frequent heartburn can increase your risk for esophageal cancer, but your doctor can monitor your symptoms and give you preventative treatment if necessary.

Can Milk Kefir Cause Heartburn

If you have begun to drink milk kefir for its many health benefits, it can be disheartening to experience negative symptoms as a result. Why would something that’s supposed to be so good for you have such nasty side effects?

The answer most likely has to do with how good your gut health was before you began drinking kefir, and how much healing you still have left to do.

First, to understand how milk kefir affects the body we need to understand what milk kefir is and what it does within our digestive system.

Natural Remedies For Acid Reflux

Milk is one of many natural remedies that people try to help treat their acid reflux, but there are other natural remedies that appear to be more effective. These include:

  • Herbs such as ginger, chamomile, aloe juice, and licorice can serve as digestive aids.
  • Baking soda, which when combined with water can help neutralize acid in the stomach.
  • Apple cider vinegar. Like baking soda, taking a spoonful of apple cider vinegar with some water is thought to serve as a digestive aid.
  • Eat a banana . Bananas are high in potassium, making them a fairly alkaline food. This means it is the perfect food to counter the stomach acid that is irritating your esophagus.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking reduces saliva production, thereby increasing the production of stomach acid.
  • Dont lay down after you eat and wear loose-fitting clothing. Anything that pushes on the belly or negates gravity from keeping your food down can cause or exacerbate your heartburn.

It’s Important to note that herbal remedies do not undergo testing for safety and effectiveness by the federal government, are not FDA approved, and often do not have to meet the same standards for manufacturing and packaging that prescription drugs do. You should never take an herbal remedy in place of traditional medication without first disclosing this information to your healthcare provider.

How Do You Stop Heartburn From Eating Tomatoes

Tomatoes are an extremely flexible ingredient that may be used to enhance the flavor of many of your go-to dishes. Those of us who have a decreased tolerance for acidic meals as we become older may find that lowering the amount of acid that is included in our favorite dishes might make mealtime a bit more manageable for us.

  • Steer clear of canned tomatoes. Because a greater acid level is often a desirable attribute for the canning and preservation process, tomatoes that have been canned or preserved in jars have a tendency to have a higher acidity level than fresh, ripe tomatoes.
  • Only choose tomatoes that have reached full maturity
  • the more firmly the tomato is set, the more acidic it will be. For the same reason, you should purchase tomatoes that are now in season. Tomatoes with names like Sun Gold or Sweet 100 are examples of some of the sweeter types.
  • During the course of the cooking process, throw in a potato. After peeling and halving a potato, you should put it to the sauce and then take it out after 20 to 30 minutes. Because the potato has taken in part of the acid, when it is removed from the water it will have a flavor similar to vinegar or pickles.
  • To reduce the acidity of the tomato sauce youre using, mix in a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda.
