1.What Colofac Tablets 135 mg are and what they are used for

When You Must Not Take It

Do not take Colofac if you have an allergy to:

• any medicine containing mebeverine hydrochloride
• any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet

Some symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin rash, itching, shortness of breath or swelling of the face, lips or tongue, which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing.

Do not take it after the expiry date printed on the pack or if the packaging is damaged or shows signs of tampering. If it has expired or is damaged return it to your pharmacist for disposal.

When Should This Medicine Not Be Used

Colofac tablets are safe for most adults. You should not, however, take Colofac IBS relief if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Before taking these tablets, speak to your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist if:

• You have developed new symptoms or your symptoms have become worse

• You have liver or kidney problems

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Mebeverine

Mebeverine has very few reported side effects . A few people have reported allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, throat or tongue, difficulty breathing or skin rashes such as an itchy nettle-type rash. Stop taking mebeverine and see a doctor straight away if you think you’ve had an allergic reaction to it.

Key Info To Know Before Taking Mebeverine

Mebeverine should not be taken by people with inactivity in the gut , this causes severe constipation.

It is fine to drive while taking mebeverine.

It is ok to drink alcohol while taking mebeverine.

Mebeverine is not known to affect other medicines. It can be taken safely with other medicines including painkillers, indigestion remedies and laxatives.

If you’ve never been diagnosed with IBS by a doctor, or you have developed new symptoms or your symptoms have got worse, you should see your doctor before using mebeverine products that are available to buy from pharmacies. It is usually recommended that you only take mebeverine when needed rather than all the time. You should start taking it when your symptoms flare up and stop once they’re under control. This may take a 10-14 days.

If your symptoms don’t get better within two weeks of taking mebeverine, or get worse at any time, you should see your doctor.

Can Mebeverine Cause Problems

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. Any side-effects from mebeverine are usually mild and rarely cause a problem. You will find a full list in the manufacturer’s information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

A few people have developed an allergic-type reaction which has included an itchy rash or swelling around the face. Although these symptoms occur rarely, you should let your doctor know if you develop this type of reaction. Alternatively, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital.

How Should I Take Colofac Ibs Tablets

Colofac IBS tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water.

Tablets should not be chewed, as they are coated and designed to break down in the gut in a controlled manner. Chewing the tablet will interfere with the effects of the medication.

You should try to take your tablets approximately 20 minutes before a meal. This is because some people report that their symptoms feel the strongest after having eaten.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, then you should consult your doctor for further advice and investigation of any other underlying problems.

What Does Mebeverine Do

Mebeverine helps to relax the muscles in the walls of the intestines and gut.

This helps to control spasms and cramping from IBS and other stomach or intestinal conditions, providing relief from painful or distressing symptoms.

How Effective Are Colofac Ibs Tablets

Colofac IBS tablets are an effective treatment to bring relief to the symptoms of IBS, such as bowel cramps, bloating, trapped wind, and diarrhoea or constipation.

As well as taking Colofac tablets, patients can help to alleviate their symptoms of IBS by making certain lifestyle changes. For example, modifying their diets to avoid certain foods that are known to aggravate IBS. This could be dairy products for some, but it will, of course, differ from patient to patient.

It is also considered that regular exercise can help to relieve some of the symptoms of IBS, such as a brisk walk or cycling.

Relaxation and lowering stress levels through activities such as meditation are also thought to help alleviate some of the symptoms of IBS.

Looking After Your Medicine

• Keep your tablets in the pack until it is time to take them.
• If you take the tablets out of the box or the blister pack they may not keep well.
• Keep the medicine in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C.

Follow the instructions in the carton on how to take care of your medicine properly.

Store it in a cool dry place away from moisture, heat or sunlight for example, do not store it:

• in the bathroom or near a sink, or
• in the car or on window sills.

Keep it where young children cannot reach it.

A locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half metres above the ground is a good place to store medicines.

What You Should Know Before Taking Colofac For Ibs

Doctors prescribe Colofac to treat various symptoms of IBS. It can be used by people who have various bowel disorders, nervous diarrhoea, constipation and more. It works by controlling muscle spasms, particularly those of the colon. With more control over muscle movements, people who suffer from bowel disorders can be free from many of their symptoms.

The active ingredient in Colofac is an antispasmodic, and it can create some undesirable side effects. Most commonly, people have reported feeling dizzy, losing their appetite, having trouble sleeping and feeling constipated. This medication can also cause rashes and itchy skin.

A tiny percentage of people may experience allergic reactions. They may break out in hives or have some trouble breathing if you feel you are suffering from an allergic reaction the medication, you should stop taking it right away and seek medical attention immediately.

Colofac can interfere with some conditions and medications, causing complications. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffer from kidney disease, you should not be taking this medication. How Do You Use Colofac

Colofac is generally given in pill or tablet form. Before you begin treatment with this medication, it is important to speak to a consultant for guidance on how you can use the substance safely. You should also read the patient leaflet that comes with this medication, as it will provide you with more information about Colofac and any of the side effects that may come with it. Ensure that you take Colofac tablets exactly as you are told to do so on the label.

If you have been given the tablet or capsule version of this medication, then you can take one capsule twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening. It is a good idea to spread the capsules out as much as possible so you can balance your exposure to the medication throughout the day and allow it to have the maximum impact on your symptoms.

When you take your Colofac tablet, make sure that you do not chew, swallow or break the capsules or pills provided to you. Breaking the pills spoils the coating, which can have an impact on how the medication is gradually released into your body. If you forget to take a dose of Colofac according to the instructions provided by your consultant, take the next dose when you remember, unless it is too close to the following dose.

Do not take two doses of Colofac at the same time to make up for a tablet that you have forgotten: simply continue with your next dose when it is due. Make sure that you seek help if you have taken an excessive amount of Colofac by accident.

If You Forget To Take Colofac

COLOFAC should be taken at the same time each day. If you miss your dose at the usual time, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your medicine as you would normally.

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to.

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you missed.

• This may increase the chance of getting an unwanted side effect.
• If you are not sure what to do, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have trouble remembering when to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist for advice.

Side Effects & Precautions

Before using this product, always read the patient information leaflet to make sure that it is the appropriate medication for you. This product is intended to relieve symptoms of IBS it is not designed to be used to treat constipation or diarrhoea.

You should not take Colofac IBS if you are allergic to any of the ingredients it contains, or if you are younger than 18 years of age. You should see a doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication if any of the following apply:

• have not suffered from IBS before or have developed new symptoms or your symptoms have become worse
• have liver or kidney problems
• You are 40 years of age or over and your symptoms have changed or it has been some time since you last had IBS
• You have blood in your stools
• You are feeling sick or are sick
• You are looking pale and feeling tired
• You have constipation
• You have recently travelled abroad
• You are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
• You have difficulty or pain when passing water

Do not use the Colofac IBS capsules after the expiry date and keep them out of reach of children. If the problem still persists after using this product or if any pain or irritation occurs then consult a doctor.

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any peculiar side effects or signs of an allergic reaction.

Can You Overdose On Mebeverine

As with any medicine, you can overdose on Mebeverine, leading to unwanted and harmful side effects. Due to this, its essential that you follow the course of treatment laid out by your doctor or pharmacist, taking the usual dose when intended.

If you miss a Mebeverine dose or forget to take a tablet for any reason, you should simply move ahead and take the next dose as planned. Its dangerous to double-up on a dose in an effort to make up for the missed dose. Forget the missed dose and aim to avoid missing future doses.

If you take too many Mebeverine tablets by accident, contact your GP or 111 for further advice. Be assured, though, that taking an extra Mebeverine tablet in an accidental one-off incident is unlikely to harm you in any serious way.

• have a rare inherited condition that means you cannot digest galactose
