What Drugs Interact With Ondansetron And Promethazine

Can promethazine codeine freeze PayPal

Ondansetron

Ondansetron and apomorphine should not be used together due to sudden lowering in blood pressure and loss of consciousness.

Phenytoin, carbamazepine, and rifampin can increase ondansetron elimination and decrease blood levels, possibly lowering the effects of ondansetron.

Dronedarone can increase blood levels of ondansetron by reducing its breakdown in the liver. This may increase side effects of ondansetron. This combination may also increase the risk of abnormal heartbeats.

Promethazine

Promethazine may increase, prolong, or intensify the sedative action of other central-nervous-system depressants, such as:

These agents should be avoided or administered in reduced dosage to patients receiving promethazine. When given concomitantly with promethazine, the dose of barbiturates should be reduced by at least one-half, and the dose of narcotics should be reduced by one-quarter to one-half. Dosage must be individualized. Excessive amounts of promethazine relative to a narcotic may lead to restlessness and motor hyperactivity in the patient with pain these symptoms usually disappear with adequate control of the pain.

Epinephrine

Because of the potential for promethazine to reverse epinephrineâs vasopressor effect, epinephrine should NOT be used to treat hypotension associated with promethazine overdose.

    What Are Ondansetron And Promethazine

Ondansetron is an anti-nausea medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancerchemotherapy. It is also used to prevent vomiting and nausea after surgery. Chemotherapy drugs increase secretion of serotonin, which stimulates serotonin receptors in the brain, causing nausea and vomiting. Ondansetron works by selectively blocking serotonin receptors, reducing the effect of increased serotonin due to chemotherapy.

Promethazine is a phenothiazine in the same drug class as chlorpromazine and trifluoperazine . Unlike other phenothiazines, promethazine is not used as an anti-psychotic. It is used as an antihistamine, sedative, and antiemetic . The body releases histamine during several types of allergic reactions. When histamine binds to its receptors on cells, it stimulates changes within the cells that lead to sneezing, itching, and increased mucus production. Antihistamines such as promethazine compete with histamine for one of the receptors for histamine on cells. However, when the antihistamines bind to the receptors they do not stimulate the cells. Instead, they prevent histamine from binding and stimulating the cells. Promethazine also blocks the action of acetylcholine , and this may explain its benefit in reducing the nausea of motion sickness. It is used as a sedative because it causes drowsiness as a side effect.

Rarely, blood cell disorders can occur low white cell counts can lead to infections.

    Additionally, phenothiazines can cause:

Ondansetron Relieved Diarrhea In Ibs Patients

Irritable bowel syndrome affects more than one in 10 people, and a small subset have diarrhea associated with it. Living with the fear of unexpected, painful diarrhea can be debilitating.

There is a fine line between stopping the diarrhea in irritable bowel syndrome and causing constipation. Recent advances in our understanding of how the gut and intestines are stimulated have produced ideas of how to control it.

Researchers tested whether a medication called ondansetron , which blocks some nerve transmissions in the gut, would work to control the diarrhea associated with some forms of IBS.

They found that ondansetron helped to relieve the frequency, urgency and loose stools of people with IBS and diarrhea.

“Ask your doctor how to treat diarrhea associated with IBS.”

This team of researchers was led by Robin Spiller from Nottingham Digestive Diseases Biomedical Research Unit at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, UK.

Serotonin, also called 5-HT3, signals nerves in the gut to increase the movement of contents through the intestines. Ondansetron, which blocks the 5-HT3 receptor, has been effective in treating nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. A side effect of treatment with this medication is constipation.

Spiller and team designed a study to test whether ondansetron would work to control the diarrhea associated with some types of IBS. Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea is referred to as IBS-D.

This research was published in the December issue of Gut.

    Which Medicine Is Usually Prescribed

The choice of medicine depends on various factors, including:

    • What is causing your feeling of sickness .
    • Whether you have any other medical conditions.
    • Whether you are pregnant.
    • Possible side-effects of the medicines.

It is not possible to list all the conditions that can cause nausea and which treatments are usually prescribed. However, some examples include:

    • Migraine: both metoclopramide and domperidone work well for nausea caused by a migraine. See the separate leaflet called Migraine Medication, Treatment and Prevention for more detail.
    • Chemotherapy: it is not unusual to take a combination of different medicines to control nausea and vomiting if you have chemotherapy. Some chemotherapy medicines are more likely than others to cause nausea and vomiting. If you have chemotherapy that has a low risk of nausea, your doctor will usually prescribe metoclopramide or domperidone. If you have chemotherapy that has a high risk of nausea, three medicines that work in a different way to each other may be prescribed – for example, ondansetron, dexamethasone and aprepitant. See the separate leaflet called Chemotherapy for more detail.
