Can Foods That Boost Gut Health Help With Eczema
Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, miso, sauerkraut, and aged cheeses like cheddar and parmesan are naturally rich in probiotics that are good for your gut health.

If Youre Having A Baby: Precautions To Take
If youre pregnant and your baby is at higher risk of developing eczema for example, if you or your partner has the filaggrin gene mutation you may want to consider taking probiotics during pregnancy as a precaution, as it may help.
Once your baby is born, consider giving them probiotics for the first few months of life and introducing a wide range of foods from three months, alongside their milk, rather than waiting till the standard NHS recommended period of six months.

Baseline Description Of Patients
We followed the CONSORT recommendations for reporting randomized clinical trials. Sixty patients were enrolled in the study and randomized, and 40 completed the trial. Of those, 24 patients received probiotics and 16 patients received placebo . Recruitment was stopped when the required sample size was reached.

What Does The Research Say
There are a number of studies that back up claims that probiotics can help allergy sufferers.
OptiBac conducted a randomised clinical trial with 47 hayfever sufferers. Some participants were given a probiotic combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM & Bifidobacterium lactis BI-04 for 4 months whilst another took a placebo. The probiotic group saw a reduction in respiratory symptoms and their inflammatory response decreased too.4
A review in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology looked at 23 studies of probiotics and allergies which, all together, involved nearly 2000 people. Here most participants who took probiotics saw improvement of some sort, including milder symptoms and better quality of life. This was in comparison to a control group who took a placebo, and saw no such improvements.5
Finally, as if all this werent enough, research conducted by the University of Florida in 2017 found similar positive results. This research involved 173 sufferers of mild, seasonal allergies and was conducted at the height of hayfever season. Again, some participants took a placebo whilst others were given the probiotics.
Here each participant had to regularly fill out a questionnaire about their symptoms, and more scientific tests were done on top of this. It was found that participants who took the probiotics had fewer nasal symptoms, plus the treatment didnt cause side effects such as drowsiness which is so often the case with antihistamines.6

Can Probiotics Be Used Directly On The Skin
Theres quite a bit of research into how the skins immune system talks to bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus the main bacterium that colonise skin in people with eczema, causing flares, infections and hospital stays. Scientists are testing whether other bacteria have a protective effect, fighting off Staph aureus. These other bacteria include Staph epidermidis and Proprionibacterium acnes, which like areas of the skin such as the face and back.
The skin is also home to fungi and viruses. Fungi prefer moist areas, such as sweaty feet and under the arms. Some fungal species are quite common, like Malassezia purpura, which can secondarily infect eczema, but they probably dont play such an important role.
In another area of research, colleagues in the United States identified bacteria in people who had eczema alongside unhealthy levels of Staph aureus. For each person, they isolated the strains of bacteria that would inhibit the growth of Staph aureus, colonised these strains in large numbers, and then put them into cream, which they applied to the persons skin. That seemed to help get rid of the Staph aureus. But because each batch of bacteria was returned to the original person it came from, this was a very personalized treatment approach that could not be scaled up to manufacturing level.

Can Probiotic Supplements Help With Eczema
If your gut health is linked to the health of your skin, could probiotic supplements help with eczema by boosting your gut microbiome?
One study found that infants who took probiotics called Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium animalis every day for 6 months were less than half as likely to develop eczema during that time as those who didnt take the supplements.
A review of seven other studies found that children whose mothers took Lactobacilli probiotics during pregnancy had a lower chance of developing eczema between the ages of 2 and 7.
