What Other Factors Can Lead To Vitamin D Deficiency
- Age: The skins ability to make vitamin D lessens with age.
- Mobility: People who are homebound or are rarely outside are not able to use sun exposure as a source of vitamin D.
- Skin color: Dark-colored skin is less able to make vitamin D than fair-colored skin.

Many people living with irritable bowel syndrome are vitamin D deficient, according to a study published in the BMJ Open Gastroenterology1. It has since been found that 82% of IBS sufferers are also low in vitamin D 2 so naturally we come to question if there is a link between vitamin D and IBS symptoms. The University of Sheffield has been spearheading this important area of research.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic and debilitating functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, affecting over 10% of people in the UK, costing the NHS in excess £11 million per year.
Vitamin D, affectionately known as the Sunshine Vitamin is an essential fat-soluble vitamin for the absorption of calcium5 and which the body generates when exposed to sunshine, or from eating a diet rich in oily fish, egg yolks and red meat.

The colon transit time was measured with radiopaque markers, using multiple capsule techniques . Moreover, LBT and GBT were used for measuring oro-cecal transit time. A rise in hydrogen of â¥ 20 ppm by 90 min was considered the cut-off value used to exclude SIBO for both tests. Time to the second peak and rise of 5-10 ppm of hydrogen, or a level of positivity for methane â¥ 10 ppm on a breath test, were considered useful in estimating oro-cecal transit time . Wireless motility analysis was also used to quantify oro-cecal transit time , in order to define the presence of a delayed small intestinal transit time. Normal small-bowel transit should be 6 hours or less . Finally, STC and/or delayed oro-cecal transit time were definitively endorsed when radiopaque markers and/or breath tests with wireless motility analysis identified a specific intestinal motility disorder.
