Change Your Eating And Drinking Habits

You may be able to control your indigestion with changes to your eating habits.

It can help to eat small meals often, rather than larger meals 3 times a day, and to not eat within 3 hours of going to bed at night.

Cutting down on drinks containing caffeine, and foods that are rich, spicy or fatty, can also ease symptoms.

High Blood Pressure And Dizziness During Early Pregnancy

In most cases, high or normal blood pressure will drop in the early stages of pregnancy. This may also cause feelings of dizziness, since your blood vessels are dilated.

High blood pressure as a result of pregnancy is more difficult to determine. Almost all cases of hypertension within the first 20 weeks indicate underlying problems. It may develop during early pregnancy, but it may also be present beforehand.

Your doctor will take your blood pressure during your first visit to help establish a baseline for a normal blood pressure reading.

Consider Avoiding Certain Foods Drinks And Large Meals

How to Treat Heartburn during Pregnancy

Some foods and drinks may make reflux worse in some people. It is difficult to be certain to what extent specific foods contribute to the problem. Let common sense be your guide. If it seems that a food is causing symptoms, try avoiding it for a while to see if symptoms improve. Foods and drinks that have been suspected of making symptoms worse in some people include:

  • Peppermint.
  • Coffee.
  • Alcoholic drinks.

Also, avoid large meals if they bring on symptoms. Some women find that eating smaller meals more frequently is helpful.

Avoiding Indigestion And Heartburn

If your symptoms are mild, it’s possible that changes to your diet or lifestyle may help prevent indigestion and heartburn. You could try:

  • eating smaller meals, more often
  • avoiding eating just before bed
  • avoiding foods and drinks that you suspect give you heartburn
  • not drinking a lot of coffee at the end of the day
  • avoiding eating and drinking at the same time, which can make your stomach more full
  • sitting up straight while eating, and not lying down after a meal
  • chewing gum, which may cause you to produce more saliva to help neutralise the acid
  • stop smoking
  • raise the head of your bed by 10 to 15cm
  • sleep on your left side

If your indigestion is not helped by diet and lifestyle changes, or your symptoms are more severe, your doctor or midwife may suggest that you take a medicine for indigestion that is safe to use during pregnancy. Medicines can neutralise the acid in your stomach, reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach and stop the acid rising into your oesophagus.

What Causes Heartburn During Pregnancy

During normal digestion, food travels down the esophagus , through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter , and into the stomach.

The LES is part of the doorway between your esophagus and your stomach. It opens to allow food through and closes to stop stomach acids from coming back up.

When you have heartburn, or acid reflux, the LES relaxes enough to allow stomach acid to rise up into the esophagus. This can cause pain and burning in the chest area.

During pregnancy, hormone changes can allow the muscles in the esophagus, including the LES, to relax more frequently. The result is that more acids may seep back up, particularly when youre lying down or after youve eaten a large meal.

In addition, as your fetus grows during the second and third trimesters and your uterus expands to accommodate that growth, your stomach is under more pressure. This can also result in food and acid being pushed back up into your esophagus.

Heartburn is a common occurrence for most people at one time or another, but it doesnt necessarily mean youre pregnant. However, if you also experience other symptoms, such as a missed period or nausea, these could be signs that you need to take a pregnancy test.

Nonprescription heartburn relievers, such as Tums® or Maalox®, can help you feel better. But talk to your healthcare provider before taking antacids. They may contain high sodium levels, which can cause you to retain water. Some also have aluminum in them, which isnt safe to consume during pregnancy. Your provider can recommend an antacid thats safe during pregnancy.

Discuss H2 Blockers With Your Doctor

If an antacid isn’t working, it may be time to consider stronger medications.

Your first option will likely be an H2 blocker like Tagamet or Zantac. These drugs suppress stomach-acid production. All four H2 inhibitors on the market are now available without a prescription and considered to be safe during pregnancy. But talk to your doctor before taking them.

“They really work,” says Einarson. “You only have to take one or two a day.”

What Are Some Unusual Signs Of Early Pregnancy

Some of the symptoms of pregnancy that people are less familiar with are:

  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux
  • Diarrhea.

Something thats often overlooked, or not well known, is the way pregnancy hormones can play havoc with your digestive system.

The reason for this is the hormone progesterone.

Progesterone starts to rise after a woman ovulates.

If she doesnt get pregnant, it drops rapidly around 10 days after ovulation.

If she does get pregnant, it continues to rise.

This is because progesterones job is to support a pregnancy.

Progesterone is responsible for many of the symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome a woman experiences.

Its also responsible for many pregnancy symptoms.

Thats why it can be difficult to figure out whether youre pregnant or about to start your period.

Causes Of Heartburn During Pregnancy

If you had heartburn before becoming pregnant, you are more likely to have symptoms during pregnancy. Although the exact reasons are not clear, most experts believe that pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, play an important role. The hormones cause esophageal sphincter relaxation. This allows partially digested food and stomach acids to flow back, or reflux, into the esophagus. In addition, progesterone also slows the digestive process. This keeps food in the stomach for longer.

Also, in the third trimester of pregnancy, the baby squeezes the digestive organs and causes heartburn. But it has no effect on the baby. The upward pressure of the growing uterus can also play a role.

They say prevention is the best medicine, so knowing common heartburn triggers can help you keep the acid at bay.

Of course, pregnancy itself is a major trigger for heartburn. As your growing uterus puts pressure on your stomach, this pushes stomach acid up your throat.

Those lovely hormones are no help either. They tend to relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus, which makes it easier for acid to make its way upward.

While theres nothing you can do to stop this entirely, there are a few things that can help prevent heartburn from flaring up during pregnancy:

Is It A Boy Or Girl Busting 6 Pregnancy Myths

Myths and Old Wives Tales

You know what Im talking about: If you have more hair on your legs than normal then youre having a girl. Or depending on how you carry the baby , you can determine its sex.

While your friends and family mean well with their input, dont put a lot of faith into their predictions.

Ive heard it all since I started delivering babies both from parents just looking for some reassurance, and even from others during my own pregnancy.

So lets clear up some of the more common myths often associated with pregnancy.

Myth No. 1: Heartburn during pregnancy means a hairy baby.

The truth is, theres no association between heartburn and the amount of hair on your newborn. You could have a lot of heartburn and deliver a completely bald baby. Acid reflux is common during pregnancy but not an accurate barometer for the number of hair bows you may need to purchase.

Myth No. 2: Low fetal heart rates mean its a boy.

Hate to break it to you, but again, no association with heart rate and the gender of your baby. Bottom line: We want all babies to have a normal heart rate. Once things progress in the pregnancy, we get more insight into gender.

Myth No. 3: If I have severe nausea, its a girl.

There might be some truth to this one. There can be a slight connection between severe nausea and vomiting in the first trimester and having a baby girl but there is certainly no guarantee.

Myth No. 4: Hair dyes can be harmful to the baby.
