Are Seeds High In Histamine

No, typically seeds are not high in histamine.

Seeds are what are known as histamine liberators, which means that can trigger or worsen a histamine intolerance reaction.

Many people who have symptoms similar to allergies, are hypersensitive to many foods or have chronic health conditions, may have histamine intolerance.

Histamine intolerance is very difficult to diagnose and there are no tests in place to provide an accurate or quick diagnosis.

Histamines are a compound found in many foods that help support the digestion process.

Histamines can become an issue if there are too many in the body or if there is not enough of the digestive enzyme diamine oxidase .

This enzyme is usually produced along with histamines and aids the body in breaking down the histamines.

However, when there is not enough of this enzyme, the histamines cannot break down effectively, leading to histamine intolerance.

Eating a lot of high histamine foods can trigger a response by the body, leading to symptoms such as hives, itchy skin, runny nose, headaches or asthma attacks.

Although seeds are not high in histamines, they have chemicals within them that can worsen a histamine intolerance reaction.

For those who have suspected or confirmed histamine intolerance, seeds should be avoided.

Some seeds contain chemicals that lead to a release of histamines in the body although they are not a high histamine food in themselves.

Can Set Off An Allergic Reaction

If you have a seed or nut allergy, you may be allergic to chia seeds too.

Chia seeds have a lot of protein in them and thats bad news if you are allergic to the protein in chia. A 100 gm serving has about 16.54 gm of protein.9 For those with a nut or seed allergy, chia seeds may be off the table.

Reactions can range from skin rashes and hives to watery eyes, vomiting, and diarrhea. Also watch out for repetitive coughing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, and a hoarse throat. You may also feel dizzy. As inflammation flares up in the larynx, tongue, and mouth, you could find it difficult to talk and even breathe.10

If your allergy is more severe, you may go into shock, your pulse may weaken, and your skin may turn pale or blue.11 Get tested to check anyway.

So How Do Chia Seeds Help Relieve Ibs

Doctors typically tell IBS patients they need to increase fiber in their diet but they dont specify what kind of fiber. There are two kinds of fiber, insoluble and soluble.

Insoluble fiber can often make IBS symptoms like gas and bloating much worse. Soluble fiber is much more calming to the digestive tract and has the ability to absorb lots of water.

Chia seeds are a great source of soluble fiber. When mixed with water they produce a chia gel. This soft and fibrous gel not only scrubs and cleans intestinal walls as it travels through the body, but it can also ease diarrhea by becoming a bulking agent that improves the consistency of stool.


Pinpoint Your Trigger Foods

Your food triggers are likely different from mine, but a good way to pinpoint exactly which foods are bothering you is to keep a food log and then try an elimination diet.

Track everything that goes into your mouth for at least a couple weeks while also documenting your bathroom habits. An example log might look like this:


  • 6:00pm: taco salad
  • 8:00pm: bowl of frozen fruit

If your log consistently looks like this, you might hypothesize that your IBS flares up after you eat wheat products.

At that point, you can try eliminating wheat for a week to see if the diarrhea goes away. If it does, you might want to avoid wheat products. If it doesnât go away, you should revisit your food log to see if thereâs another link between your food and diarrhea. Eliminate that food for a week and see if it clears up your IBS symptoms.

Itâs a terribly tedious process, but itâs still a good way to determine exactly whatâs triggering your IBS symptoms. This is how my mom and I figured out that high fructose corn syrup was my biggest trigger food nearly a decade ago.

Do Chia Seeds Cause Constipation

They can and this could also be a reason why they trigger bloating.

Now, this might surprise you as normally foods with as much fibre in it as chia would be good for keeping things regular . But some people with IBS can find chia seeds cause constipation instead.

And just as chia seeds cause gas if they hang around your system too long, the same thing happens if you dont regularly move your bowels.

Have No More Than 15 Tbsps Twice A Day

Have no more than 11.5 tablespoons up to twice a day. Always soak them the night before.

On the whole, the chia seed is a powerhouse of goodness. No wonder every nutritionist loves it. Ayurveda also recommends adding chia to your regular diet, conscious of its high-fiber effects.

But since the superfood is still not fully understood, more studies will be needed before it can be declared safe for those with conditions like high triglycerides and low blood pressure, and even pregnant women.

Just make sure that you dont rely on just chia seeds for your daily fiber intake. If you are aiming to lose weight, having more of it wont help you lose much. After all, you will have added on extra calories from the seeds as well.

Typically, 11.5 tablespoons taken up to twice a day should be fine for most people. Thats the equivalent of a 20 gm serving that has 139 Cal.14

The second thing I did to get rid of my IBS was stop eating the foods that triggered my IBS symptoms.

Once I completely cut high fructose corn syrup, meat, and dairy products from my diet, I noticed an almost-immediate improvement in my IBS symptoms. After only one month of not eating any of these foods, I no longer had those critical, painful, oh-my-gosh-I-need-a-bathroom-NOW episodes. My digestion still wasnât completely perfect but the worst part was definitely over.

And if that wasnât enough, I could also tell that my body was on its way to tolerating real foods again.

In fact, after keeping those three products out of my digestive tract for a full two months, my body was able to heal to the point that I could eat real foods like apples, watermelon, and bell peppers again.

And these days I can even tolerate small amounts of my trigger foods on occasion without getting the more severe IBS symptoms. I still try to avoid them as much as possible to keep my gut happy, but on those rare occasions when I do eat one of those ingredients, itâs nice to know I wonât have an acute IBS attack.

How To Stop Bloating From Chia Seeds

So, does this mean you have to give up chia if it makes you bloated?

Not necessarily. Its possible to eat chia seeds and lower the risk of bloating, if you just chew them well, or even better, grind them up before you eat them or buy ready-milled chia seeds as this creates finer particles that your body finds easier to digest says Yvonne.

Another option is to soak the seeds before you eat them. Chia naturally swells when it meets liquid and if this happens in your stomach it can also be another reason for chia seed bloating. If you soak them first though, they have already soaked up some liquid and therefore dont have the same effect.

You could either try ready-made chia puddings or try making a chia pudding by soaking the seeds in milk, coconut milk or almond milk overnight.

You can also pop a spoonful into a bottle of water. They turn into a gloopy gel onto which you can add a little lemon or lime to make a drink called chia fresca.

Dont add too many though or itll go solid, this explains why chia is very, very good at keeping you full.

Soaking seeds is a better idea that simply trying to wash them down with water this has caused problems for people with swallowing difficulties in the past and its better to be safe than sorry.
