Common Culprits Of Gi Distress

Otter Digestive System Lower Intestines / Coach

The cause of IBS or other GI distress could be as simple as the food youre eating. Fatty foods, spicy foods, carbonated beverages, artificial sweeteners, and chocolate are frequently associated with IBS. You also may notice that certain vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage havent agreed with you lately. And dont forget lactose, the sugar found in milk. Millions of Americans are lactose intolerant and suffer digestive issues after consuming dairy products.

Stress is also a common cause of IBS, since the complex nervous system that controls your digestive tract is influenced by the brain.

What does it mean if I have a chronically noisy stomach?

This is something patients ask me all the time. Yet all of us have that noisy abdomen on occasion. And everyones baseline is a bit different: one persons very noisy abdomen is another persons normal belly sound.

In most cases, odd noises from your stomach are simply part of your normal digestive process. For example, if youre in a fasting state and youre hungry, something as simple as seeing images of food or smelling food may signal the stomach to start contracting in anticipation of eating.

Also, your body has a process called the migrating motor complex that occurs every hour or so. It basically sends a shockwave down the digestive tract to keep digested material moving along, and this can likewise create unusual noises.

Hunger Causes Gurgling Stomach

Hunger is one of the most common reasons for a gurgling stomach. When you havent eaten for a few hours, your gut sends signals to your brain to get your digestive system working. But, why would your stomach emit noises if it is empty?

The journal Frontiers in Pharmacology explains that the connection between your brain and gut can cause the stomach and small intestines to become more active when they are empty. This is described as the Migrating Motor Complex. The noisy contractions from your tummy could be the stomach clearing out accumulated food in the intestines to get ready for the next meal.

Gastroenterologist, Dr. Laurence Bailen, explains that the noises usually stop when you put some food in your system. This is because your digestive muscles start breaking down the food to digest it properly. Dr. Bailen recommends eating food slowly and not talking at the same time to prevent stomach gurgling during digestion.3

Where Is The Bowel Located

The bowel, also known as the gastrointestinal tract , is a critical part of our digestive system as its primary role is to process nutrients and minerals from consumed foods before expelling the waste products. Our bowels are long and hollow tubes that are split into two sections, these being the:

  • Small intestine: Located underneath our stomach in the lower abdomen, its main role is to digest food by absorbing minerals and nutrients.
  • Large intestine: Located around our small intestine and consists of the colon and rectum. The main role of the large bowel is to turn leftover waste products into stool, before expelling it from the rectum.

Food Intolerance Or Allergy

Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD)

Food intolerance is widespread more than you think. Up to 20% of people have a food intolerance and the vast majority dont know they have it.

Food intolerance is a difficulty digesting certain types of food. The most widespread type of lactose intolerance .

The intolerance often results in a deficiency of a defect in the digestion or absorption of certain types of food or food constituents. As a result, food accumulates inside your digestive systems and causes symptoms as stomach gurgling and sick feeling.

Food allergy is another type of food reaction that causes stomach gurgling and sick feeling. Food allergy is different from food intolerance.

The allergy is an immune-mediated response to a food that can cause more severe symptoms. The symptoms of food allergy are not confined to your gut. Extra-intestinal allergic conditions such as skin rashes also develop.

Consult your doctor or dietitian if your stomach keeps gurgling or you feel sick after consuming certain types of foods or drinks.

The summary and differences between food intolerance and food allergy are in the table below:

Eating small, regular meals throughout the day is kinder on your digestive system than skipping meals or having massive feeds.

Water is the best liquid you can drink. Alcohol and beverages that contain caffeine stimulate your intestines and can make diarrhea worse. Carbonated drinks just give you more gas!

Exercise is a great mood lifter and can help reduce any anxiety you may have about your condition.

A heating pad to place on your stomach when the pain is bad may also help.

Nerva is an online program that uses evidence-based hypnotherapy techniques to help you learn automatic skills to help fix the miscommunication between your gut and brain. The program was designed by Dr Simone Peters, who ran a clinical trial with Monash University that found her approach worked just as well as the Low FODMAP diet in helping you live well with IBS.

Is Stomach Rumbling Common

Borborygmi can occur at any time and are the sounds of peristalsis – a series of wave-like muscle contractions that mix food in the stomach with liquids and digestive juices and move food along through your intestines. During this process, air and gases produced by digestion, also get squeezed and make noises.

A rumbling or growling stomach is a normal part of the digestion process and the body’s way of communicating hunger. Because there is nothing in the stomach to muffle or silence these rumbles, they are often noticeable.

Rumbling noises of an empty stomach will last 10-20 minutes out of every hour, until you fill your stomach up again. It is common both before eating – when you likely feel most hungry – and hours after your last meal.

Why Does My Stomach Hurt And Feel Hungry

Hunger hormone The brain triggers the release of a hormone called ghrelin in response to an empty stomach or in anticipation of the next meal. Ghrelin signals the body to release stomach acids to digest food. If food is not consumed, the stomach acids begin to attack the lining of the stomach, causing hunger pains.

could this be IBS? (constant stomach gurgling) : r/ibs

If you are experiencing stomach problems, then you may also be feeling stressed. When we experience high levels of stress, our gut also feels this stress. Stress and anxiety have been linked to chronic health problems such as heart disease, depression, and obesity. There is also a connection between stomach gurgling and bloating, constipation, and stomach pain. Further symptoms of stress induced stomach gurgling include:

  • Reduced production of Serotonin

If your stomach gurgling is a symptom of stress, there are many things you can do to change your behavior and response to stress. In general, most of us will often respond to stressful events in a poor way. We will wait and hope that the source of our stress goes away by itself, excessively shop, drink alcohol, treat ourselves to something we want, or gamble. Symptoms Of Ibs Include Altered Bowel Habits And Stomach Pain

What is IBS? (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Symptoms of IBS vary a lot. Even in the same person, IBS symptoms may change from month-to-month. Most people with IBS have at least two of these symptoms:

  • Multiple episodes of stomach discomfort for at least three months of the past year
  • Altered bowel habits – passing feces more or less frequently than normal or periods of constipation and then periods of diarrhea
  • Pain or discomfort that lessens after a bowel movement
  • Mucus mixed in with the feces
  • Swelling or bloating of the stomach, or a feeling of fullness soon after eating.

Increased stomach gurgling or bowel sounds are also reported frequently by people with IBS.

Eating Too Much Sugar

A diet containing too much sugar and foods containing natural sugar can cause excessive stomach gurgling. Too much sugar, especially fructose, can cause digestive upset and a gurgling stomach.

Doctors on WebMD reported on a study showing that fructose isnt easily absorbed by the body. If there is too much fructose in the body, it ferments with bacteria in the colon. Some of the symptoms are excessive gas, pain, bloating, and diarrhea.6 The IFFGD says that fructose can also cause increased intestinal noise.7

If you notice digestive problems like stomach growling, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea after eating, you should ask your doctor to test you for fructose intolerance. You could also try to limit your consumption of high-fructose foods.

How To Stop Stomach Noises Ibs

    Home> Blog> Digestive Health | September 29, 2021

Stomach gurgling can help you determine exactly what is going on in your body. Stomach gurgling is described as the uncomfortable feeling that occurs when your stomach feels like it is going to erupt. It occurs when food, gas, and liquids pass through the stomach and travel into the small intestine. Typically, stomach gurgling occurs when you eat too quickly, or you eat something that did not agree with your system. If your stomach gurgling becomes a recurring theme, it can be a sign of a digestive problem.

The Dilemma Associated With Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber is found in foods such as wheat bran, vegetables, and whole grains. It is a powerful digestive stimulant and helps food to pass more quickly through the stomach and intestines.

Unfortunately, research has found it not so good for people with IBS. The dilemma is that insoluble fiber is found in a lot of healthy foods, so removing it from your diet all together is not a good idea, as you would be missing out on a valuable dietary component.

Eating small amounts of insoluble fiber and mixing foods that contain both soluble and insoluble fiber seems to help.

The Conditions That Cause Stomach Gurgling

As mentioned before, hunger is the most common cause of stomach gurgling, so learning to better read and respond to your own hunger cues can help if thats the cause. Another frequent cause is not reaching rest and digest mode prior to and while eating, Dr. Zook says. Many of us are rushed and often multi-tasking through our meals, she says, which can lead to poor digestion. Focus on taking a few deep breaths before you eat to activate your parasympathetic nervous system and see if it helps.

But if those get ruled out, the sounds and sensations of borborygmi might come from a few other, more serious conditions, including:

    • Infections, like bacteria, yeast, or parasites
    • Small intestinal bacteria overgrowth
    • Food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance

    Does Fiber Make A Difference

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – causes, symptoms, risk factors, treatment, pathology

The relationship between fiber and IBS is…you guessed it…not straightforward. First, let’s explain that there are two types fiber – soluble and insoluble.

Soluble fiber attracts water and turns to a gel during digestion. It is found in foods such as oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, some fruits and vegetables, and in psyllium, a common fiber supplement. Research has shown it to be beneficial in IBS, helping to soothe and regulate the digestive tract.

We’ll review insoluble fiber in the next slide.
