Signs You Are Taking Too Many Probiotics: 2 Gas

Can You Take Too Many Probiotics? | Doctor Sameer Islam

Gas and bloating often go hand in hand. The digestive process itself normally produces gas. The average person passes gas 13 to 21 times per day.

Gas in your GI tract comes from air that you swallow or by the break down of undigested foods by bacteria in your colon . Normally, as bacteria digest food in your gut, gas is released. Certain foods, particularly those high in fiber, cause more gas production than others.

Probiotic supplements essentially provide your gut with more of the good digestive bacteria. Overdosing on that bacteria can cause increased gas .

Can You Take Too Much Probiotics If Youre Ill

There are exceptions, though, in which you need to exercise caution with regards to dosage. If you are gravely ill or have a condition that compromises your immune system, then we suggest speaking to your doctor before going on probiotics. While extremely rare, there are documented instances of patients developing complications after taking probiotics.

In one of these cases1, a 17-year-old boy hospitalized for colitis developed bacteremia one week after taking a lactobacillus probiotic strain. Bacteremia is a condition where abnormal traces of bacteria enters your bloodstream. Researchers concluded that probiotics in such an instance may pose a risk for immunosuppressed patients.

There is also another case2 in which a 48-year-old patient developed endocarditis, an infection that occurs in the inner lining of the heart. The diagnosis arose after the patient had been on a lactobacillus probiotic strain.

We must stress again that these are exceptionally rare cases, and patients in both instances had pre-existing conditions that weakened their immune system. In this scenario, too many probiotics or even probiotics in moderate doses may lead to medical complications.

There Is No Way To Know What Dose You Are Taking

The probiotic supplement market is relatively unregulated, so it’s hard to know how many CFUs we actually are consuming when we take probiotics in pill form. Moreover, it’s difficult to know if the organisms in those probiotics are even still alive and capable of doing their job, or if they’re dead and useless. Even if the bacteria are alive, there’s a question about whether they can survive once inside your gut.

If you are getting your probiotics from foods like store-bought yogurt, there are also very few ways to be sure that you are consuming a significant dose of good bacteria. The conditions that the yogurt is stored in down the supply chain, the temperature of your refrigerator, and the strain of probiotic that the yogurt contains all have a significant effect on the dosage of CFU. Many of the beneficial microbes could have perished before you consume the yogurt.

Can You Take Too Many Probiotics

Yes, you can. Probiotics are suppose to help maintain a balance of good and bad bacteria in your stomach or gut. But if you take too much probiotics, you will experience an imbalance instead and cause various side effects.

When you have too much probiotics, your gut will have an overwhelming amount of good bacteria. So, its not the more good bacteria you have, the better, but rather there should be just the right amount to not throw your gut off track.

What Is The Recommended Dosage For Probiotics

Probiotics for Candida: How Many and How Long?

Currently, there is little guidance of dosage of probiotics. There are, however, some guidelines in the dosage to prevent hospital-acquired diarrhea: 109 1010 CFU/day of Lactobacillus rhamnosus during 7 days 11and to cure antibiotic-associated diarrhea in children: 3.108 CFU of spore-forming bacteria, 3 times daily.12

Overall, it has been suggested that the consumption of 109 1010 CFU/day would be necessary to induce an effect on the gut microbiota and potentially heal your gut.13, 14

Is It Possible To Take Too Many Probiotics

If youre taking probiotics every day, youve probably wondered if its possible to overdose on them. Well, the good news is that theres no evidence that taking too many probiotics will cause significant harm. However, you may experience some mild side effects.

There is no long-term danger in healthy individuals related to taking probiotics supplements, including probiotic capsules. There is generally no harm in raising your intake of probiotics when recommended by a qualified healthcare provider.

However, the directed use of the product should be taken into account and its important to note that taking particularly large doses of probiotics can result in temporary side effects in some circumstances. Side effects are typically lessened when decreasing the amount of probiotics consumed.

Probiotics Dosage With Antibiotics And After Taking Antibiotics

Antibiotics when ingested target to kill the harmful bacteria in the body. Unfortunately, this also leads to the death of the good bacteria.

When this happens, the ratio of the good to bad bacteria is tilted and can result in diarrhea. You may use probiotics to aid in the restoration of the bacteria in the gut.

However, this needs some caution. For instance, there is need to take the probiotics at least 2 hours after ingesting the antibacterial.

Secondly, you need to follow the manufacturers advice on the number of capsules for instance to take per day so as to lead to a good gut re-colonization.

Whats Too Much Too Little Or Maybe Its The Wrong Strain How Do You Get It Right

Can You Take Too Many Probiotics? – How Much Is Too Much?

You know the saying, If a little does a little bit of good then a lot must do a whole lot of good But when it comes to probiotics, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

Weve talked before about the microbiome, the ginormous collection of microbes that live in your gut.

Some of those bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes maintain a thriving ecosystem of sorts that assists your body in many of its functions. And they also provide a powerful immune system to protect you from infections, cancer, and viruses from the common cold to HIV.

There are at any given moment -10 microbes to every single cell in the human body. So were vastly outnumbered from the start.

But thankfully, the majority of those microbes help us function and protect us from invaders. The rest of them are always on the attack and being destroyed or eaten by the good bacteria.

Until something happens that jars that system out of balance. For example:

An infection treated by antibiotics, where the good bacteria are wiped out along with the bad.

Stomach upset that results in vomiting or diarrhea, where massive evacuation of the intestine leaves behind a weakened balance of beneficial and destructive microbes.

An injury that drives you to take a heavy load of ibuprofen, and your stomach lining becomes irritated, causing pain and bleeding.

In each of these examples, ingesting probiotics can help to restore balance in your gut, and relieve symptoms.

What Happens When You Take Probiotics Everyday

Help your body digest food Keep bad bacteria from getting out of control and making you sick Create vitamins Help support the cells that line your gut to prevent bad bacteria that you may have consumed from entering your blood.

As for probiotic foods, Ideally we should always be eating probiotic-rich, fermented food daily, Gandhi says, but even more so if you are not taking a supplement These foods introduce multiple new strains of good bacteria to the gut, diversifying the microbiome, she explains.

Allergy Symptoms / Allergic Reactions

One cause of having allergic symptoms is when youre sensitive to histamines. If you experience symptoms of allergy, though, it doesnt necessarily mean that youre allergic to the supplement itself.

Some allergy symptoms include:

  • Dry, red, and cracked skin
  • Itchy, red, and watery eyes
  • Raised and itchy red rashes
  • Itchy, runny, or clogged nose
  • Swollen lips, tongue, eyes or face
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick, nausea or diarrhea
  • Wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing
  • To some people, their histamine levels increase in their GI tract as certain bacteria population grows. When this happens, youll be experiencing things almost identical to symptoms of being exposed to a particular allergen.

However, you might still experience these symptoms due to the most natural reason that we know: exposure to an allergen.

Some people have a specific food, ingredient, or substance that their bodies are intolerant to. For some, it may even be more than one. So, if you are exposed to an allergen, your body would react to it and you might end up experiencing the symptoms stated above.

Probiotic supplements can contain allergens that might cause varying reactions to some people. To avoid accidental intake of an allergen, make sure to read the labels carefully.

If a person has a condition that affects their immune system, they should speak with their doctor before taking probiotics.

Also, anyone using antifungal medication should wait until the infection has cleared up before taking probiotics.

How Much Probiotic Should I Take?

Probiotics are safe for the vast majority of the population, but may not be the best fit for everyone.

In rare cases, the bacteria or yeasts found in probiotics can enter the bloodstream and cause infections in susceptible individuals .

Those at greatest risk for infection from probiotics include people with suppressed immune systems, prolonged hospitalizations, venous catheters or those who have undergone recent surgeries .

However, the risk of developing an infection is very low, and no serious infections have been reported in clinical studies of the general population.

It is estimated that only about one in one million people who take probiotics containing Lactobacilli bacteria will develop an infection. The risk is even smaller for yeast-based probiotics, with only about one in 5.6 million users getting infected .

When infections do occur, they typically respond well to traditional antibiotics or antifungals. However, in rare cases, deaths have occurred .

Research also suggests that people with severe acute pancreatitis should not take probiotics, as this may increase the risk of death .

    Summary

People with compromised immune systems, venous catheters, recent surgery, acute pancreatitis or prolonged hospitalizations should avoid taking probiotics.

Can I Get Probiotics From Food

You can absolutely increase beneficial microbes in your body from the foods you eat. Certain foods have probiotics in them and can benefit the health of your microbiome.

These foods can be introduced into your diet at any point of the day. You may even be regularly eating them now and not realize that they contain probiotics. You will want to check the food label for live and active cultures. A few suggestions for just some of the probiotic-rich foods you can add to your diet and some times to try them include:

    For breakfast, try:

Probiotic supplements may be combined with a prebiotic. Prebiotics are complex carbohydrates that feed the microorganisms in your gut. Basically, prebiotics are the food source for the good bacteria. They help feed the good bacteria and keep it healthy. Prebiotics include inulin, pectin and resistant starches.

When you have a supplement that combines a probiotic and prebiotic, its called a synbiotic.

    Stomach Aches Or Cramps

An upset stomach can go hand-in-hand with symptoms like gas and bloating, says McCallum, and should fade in a few weeks if its just a matter of your body adjusting to your new probiotics. But if unwelcome bloat continues living in your gut, it can cause everything from nausea to cramping in the longer term, and could be a sign that your probiotics arent agreeing with you.

    Is Probiotic Overdose Possible

Were used to health supplements coming with a recommended daily allowance. However, because probiotics are live bacteria rather than vitamin or mineral nutrients, its a bit more difficult to quantify. Its estimated that we contain ten times more bacterial cells than our own bodys cells. Its hard to imagine that an extra capsule of probiotics can make too much of an difference.

However, as Ive already mentioned, taking too much probiotics will most likely increase incidence of digestive side effects.

The number of bacteria found in probiotic supplements is unlikely to cause problems, particularly when taken as directed. If you accidentally take too much probiotics, you may want to stay near a toilet but unless you have a weakened immune system youre unlikely to experience major health impacts.

That said, you should always use supplements as per the instructions on the packaging or your doctors instructions. Theres no reason to adjust the dose yourself unless you want to lower it to avoid side effects.

Which Probiotics Should You Take With Antibiotics

    Probiotic promise

Your pharmacy probably has shelves filled with different bottles of probiotic supplements. How do you choose the right probiotics to take with your antibiotics? Dr. Bryan Tran, cofounder of DrFormulas, recommends looking for probiotics that have the three Ds:

Dose: The amount of active microbiota in a probiotic is measured in colony-forming units, or CFUs. You want a dose with 10 billion CFUs or higher, Dr. Tran said. This dose may appear on the product label as 1 x 1010.

Diversity: The label on a bottle of probiotics will also tell you which strains of bacteria the capsules contain. Look for probiotics that have five to 10 different strains. Studies that compare single-strain probiotics to multi-strain probiotics have found that a variety of strains is more effective at reducing diarrhea, said Dr. Tran. However, other studies have shown that multi-strain probiotics are not always better than single strain.

The most widely studied types of probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium species. These strains of probiotics have been shown in more studies to help stabilize the microbiome and keep it healthy, compared to other types of probiotic strains. If youre considering adding a probiotic supplement to your daily regime, consult with your provider first about what type of diversity you need.

You can ask your pharmacist for a recommendation that fits these criteria.
