What Is The Prognosis For Insect Bite Reactions

Except in rare cases of anaphylactic shock, the prognosis is excellent. Cases that involve tens to hundreds of bee stings merit a more guarded prognosis.

Many pets that demonstrate insect bite hypersensitivity are also hypersensitive to flea and tick bites, pollens and molds, and many foods.

Future insect bites should be avoided because many reactions worsen with repeated exposure to the offending proteins or toxins. You should always tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever experienced an insect bite reaction so that preventive measures can be taken in the future. Many pets that demonstrate insect bite hypersensitivity are also hypersensitive to flea and tick bites, pollens and molds, and many foods. Speak to your veterinarian for information on products that are safe and effective for preventing insect bites in your dog.

Treatment For Seasonal/environmental Allergies

If allergy testing has not been performed, then the treatment is symptomatic, meaning that it aims to reduce or eliminate your dogs symptoms. Treatments can include:

  • Oral medications, such as Apoquel, Atopica, or antihistamines

  • Injectable medications, such as Cytopoint

  • Frequent bathing

Steroids should not be used long-term in the management of allergies due to the risk of significant side effects.

If an allergy test has been performed, then the ideal allergy treatment for dogs is avoidance of the allergen. This is possible in a few, select circumstances, but most dogs are allergic to a variety of substances that can be difficult to avoid completely.

Other treatment can include an allergy vaccine, also known as immunotherapy, which is given either by injection under the skin or by mouth. The goal of immunotherapy is to make the immune system less reactive to the allergy-causing substances.

The success rate of immunotherapy is 60-70%. This is the best long-term approach to allergy control, especially in younger pets that experience symptoms most of the year. Symptomatic treatment can and should be given while starting immunotherapy. It may be many months before any improvement in symptoms is seen from immunotherapy alone.

Treatment For Insect Bites

Treatment for insect bites depends upon what insect has bitten and how sever the reaction is. While there are numerous ways to treat insect bites, the suitability depends on what the insect is and how the person bitten is affected.

Below are some of the main treatment options for insect bites:

  • Mild local reactions can be treated with cold compresses, oral painkillers, or calamine lotion or any other topical cream. Home remedies include the application of a paste of baking soda and water or quick lime. This reduces itching and prevents bacteria build-up.
  • Serious reactions require immediate medical attention. If a venomous insect as a black widow spider bites, do not wait for other symptoms such as, seizures, stomach cramps and vomiting to begin. Rush to the nearest emergency room for anti-venom. Apply a tourniquet to restrict the circulation of blood and keep calm to avoid fast spread of venom through the system.

Insect bites can be painful and itchy in general and fatal in certain cases. The severity of the condition depends upon the insect and the persons reaction level. It is imperative to find out what insect has bitten in case of painful bites resulting severe reactions. Seek immediate medical assistance in situations of sever discomfort and reactions while home remedies and OTC anointments can sooth mild discomforts.

Tummy Troubles: Diarrhea + Food Allergies

How to tell if your bloating or stomach upset is caused by an intolerance or allergy to food.

Ever have one of those days when your stomach feels lousy? It could be caused by something you ate that didnt taste quite right. But if you often find yourself feeling sick after eating, theres most likely another cause. One possibility is that you have a food allergy or intolerance.

Food Allergy or Food Intolerance?

Food intolerances are much more common than food allergies, but the latter can be more dangerous. The types of symptoms you have can vary, ranging from mild to severe.

If you have a food intolerance, youll likely experience gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming the problem food. Symptoms most commonly include:

Signs of a food allergy may include the above symptoms, as well as:

  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat
  • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting

With food intolerances, you may be able to eat small amounts of the offending food without a reaction or with only very mild symptoms. If you have a food allergy, the food should be avoided completely because it may cause serious or even life-threatening reactions.

Abrupt Changes In Diet

No matter how quality the food your feeding your dog is, changing it up suddenly can cause serious gastric distress for your pooch.

Abruptly changing from one type or brand of food to another is likely to cause some stomach problems with most dogs and serious diarrhea in those that are more sensitive. If you need to switch your dogs food, you need to do so slowly.

Even the most enthusiastic eaters can get an upset stomach if their diet is changed up too abruptly. Always change your dogs food gradually to give their stomach time to adjust.

The recommended process for gradually switching your dog to a new diet is to slowly increase the ratio of new to old food over the course of about four days.

Day 1: 25% new food mixed with 75% original food

Day 2: 50% new food mixed with 50% original food

Day 3: 74% new food mixed with 25% original food

Day 4: 100% new food

If your dog is especially sensitive, even this schedule may be too abrupt. If thats the case, start with about 10% new food and raise the ratio more gradually over the course of a couple of weeks.

Many dog owners mistakenly blame loose stool on the new food itself, rather than the change in diet. This leads many pet parents to throw out a higher-quality food and return to the original, lower-quality food. The truth is, switching abruptly to any food will cause issues, but switching from one very low in protein to one very high in protein will cause even more issues.

Sign #: Low Blood Pressure Dizziness And Fainting

Why do certain foods cause diarrhea immediately after eating them?

Its true that, unless you happen to have a monitor with you, it may be challenging for you to check your own blood pressure. But low blood pressure, or hypotension, can be an indicator of anaphylaxis.

Low blood pressure may present as clamminess of the skin or simply as dizziness and vertigo. If you notice that youre suffering from low blood pressure, that could be a good sign youve been exposed to an allergen and youre suffering from anaphylaxis .

Low blood pressure, dizziness and fainting are not necessarily typical symptoms of anaphylaxis, although they can occur. Typically, if you feel faint or lose consciousness as part of an allergic reaction its because your blood pressure drops. In terms of anaphylaxis, a fainting spell or a sudden sense of vertigo will be difficult to miss!

If youve recently been exposed to an allergen or youre experiencing other signs of anaphylaxis and you begin to feel faint, its essential to seek medical attention immediately. This is especially true as fainting and dizziness can cause their own medical problems .

Food Allergies Tied To Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Nov. 12, 2015 Food allergies and genes that raise your odds of getting allergic diseases might play roles in some peoples irritable bowel syndrome , two new studies suggest.

Allergic asthma, rhinitis, and eczema go hand-in-hand with diarrhea and bad digestive reactions to food in certain people with IBS, researchers say.

The thinking is that if you can figure out their food allergies, you can really improve their diarrhea and abdominal pain. And we see in the clinic that they do feel better, says senior researcher Mary Tobin, MD, an allergist at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

The findings of both studies were presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting.

In one study, Tobin and her colleagues spotted a possible connection between allergic rhinitis, asthma, and the allergic gut.

They evaluated 122 with people with IBS tied to allergies and 32 with IBS and no allergies. Those with IBS associated with allergies were more likely to have diarrhea as their main problem. And those with IBS and no allergies were more likely to have constipation as their main symptom.

The diarrhea is possibly from reactions that are similar to what happens with food allergies, Tobin says.

Complications That May Arise From Scratching Bed Bug Bites

Bed bug bites can cause various complications if a person is extremely allergic to them. To some, treatment is unnecessary. The amounts of suffering you can experience from these bites depend on your bodys reaction.

Bed bug bites do not spread when scratched, but scratching can lead to skin infections. Bacteria thrive in our environment, waiting for their turn to enter our system. Repeated scratching of bed bug bites can lead to skin breakage. This tiny opening will allow bacteria or viruses to go into your bloodstream.

If left untreated, pus may develop at the site of infection. If the scratching continues, the discharge from the affected area can spread the infection to other parts of your skin. Thus your simple bed bug bites can be life-threatening if the infection is left untreated. Some of these infections caused by bacteria are ecthyma, cellulitis, and lymphangitis.

Some people can have an extreme allergy to bed bug bites. Therefore, they may show extreme symptoms from the bites on their skin. It can trigger a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. The victim will start to feel like they have a lump in their throat and may have difficulty swallowing.

To avoid further complications from bed bug bites, it is best not to take these bites for granted. They may look small and less dangerous, but they can still develop into more complicated skin problems.
