Do Carbonated Drinks Make You Bloated

CARBONATED DRINKS: Do they cause BELLY BLOAT? [ANSWER]

If you’ve ever researched the effects of colas on stomach acid, you’ve probably seen some articles that say it helps soothe an upset stomach, and others that assure it does more harm than good. What’s the real story?

It all comes down to the way soda interacts with your stomach â and this is different for everyone. While research has not shown a consistent link between soda and acid reflux, carbonated sodas can slightly alter the pH levels in your body, and they can also add air to your stomach and intestines.

But this effect is inconsistent depending on the person. If you struggle with acid reflux, cutting back on soda may alleviate some of your symptoms, but it’s probably not a root cause of the problem.

Ease Into A Yoga Pose

Once the dessert is cleared, find some space to give your body a nice stretch. Gentle yoga poses like Childs pose or Cat/Cow can help relieve abdominal discomfort associated with bloating, Doyle says. Hold each pose for five deep breaths , and continue repeating until you feel some relief, she says. Allow your belly to expand fully with each inhale, Doyle says. This helps to activate your bodys parasympathetic nervous system, or rest and digest mode, which is calming and will allow you to better digest your food.

Symptoms Caused By Excessive Drinking

People who consume large quantities of carbonated water will typically have issues with excessive gas or bloating.

Studies have conclusively linked too much fizz with gas and bloating, however, many find it hard to reduce their intake of carbonated water as there are no other viable health concerns.

People who are affected by IBS or other intestinal issues should avoid any carbonated drinks, including carbonated water.

Quit Smoking While Drinking

Quitting smoking completely is an extremely good idea if you want to protect your health, however, not smoking on your night out is already going to do you some good. The reason for that is that smoking leads to inhaling and swallowing a lot of air that gets trapped in your body. Moreover, the toxins in cigarette smoke cause inflammation in your stomach and intestines, making you bloated and uncomfortable.

The Research That Links Carbonated Water To Weight Gain

Bloating, causes, and how to prevent it?

A study published in the peer-reviewed journal Obesity Research and Clinical Practice in 2017, found that rats that were given carbonated water or diet soda, released more of the hunger hormone ghrelin, ate more, and ultimately gained more weight than those that drank flat water or tap water.

The researchers from Birzeit University fed a group of rats a standard diet, but separated them into four groups and gave each group one of four possible drinks: tap water, flat soda water, soda water, and diet soda.

The rats that were fed either of the two carbonated beverages, were found to have significantly higher levels of ghrelin which your stomach secretes when its empty prompting them to eat 20 percent more than the other rats.

The rats that drank the fizzy water also showed a build up of fat in their organs, which is one of the symptoms of chronic obesity in humans.

A similar experiment was repeated with human participants. One hour after eating, participants drank one of the four beverages. When they drank the carbonated beverages, they had ghrelin levels six times higher than when they drank tap water.

Ultimately, the researchers concluded that, This study clearly shows discernible effect of the carbon dioxide gas in carbonated drinks on increased food ingestion and heightened risk of weight gain, obesity and fatty liver disease by inducing ghrelin release.

Can You Get Carbon Monoxide From A Wood Burner

This is why its always a good idea to have any heating equipment checked by a professional prior to the heating season.

Diet Soda And Fluid Retention

Diet soda contains sugar replacements such as artificial sweeteners, which greatly reduce the number of calories in the beverage. Scientist speculate that artificial sweeteners may cause or contribute to fluid retention, but well-designed studies on human subjects are needed to know for sure. As of now little evidence exists to positively prove that the artificial sweeteners in soda cause you to retain water.

In a study published in the journal Appetite in January 2011, scientists tested effects of the artificial sweeteners saccharin and aspartame and fluid retention in an animal experiment. In the study, artificial sweeteners, but not sugar, caused weight gain unrelated to calorie intake that researchers speculate may have been because of water retention. While these results are interesting, this was a small, short-term study using rats, and longer-duration human studies are necessary before conclusions can be drawn.

Do Carbonated Drinks Cause Gas

The short answer to this question is yes, but the longer answer is a bit more complicated.

While a 2009 report put out by the Departmental of Clinical and Experimental Medicine at the University of Naples claims that Most of the CO2 in a carbonated beverage does not actually reach the stomach, both the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine say that carbonated beverages can increase gas in the digestive system.

The answer gets more intricate when you add sugar and artificial sweeteners into the mix.

If you find that youre increasingly bloated after drinking diet soda, it may be because some artificial sweeteners can also cause excess gas. An overabundance of high-fructose corn syrup which is found in many regular sodas may also lead to gas and bloating.

Aspartame Could Cause Stomach Pain

Aspartame, an artificial sweetener found in diet sodas, could also be causing problems for your gut. In a study published in September 2018 in the journal Molecules, researchers found that artificial sweeteners can wreak havoc on your gut’s microbiome, the collection of natural bacteria that keep your body functioning at its best.

When your microbiome is disrupted, your body has more trouble digesting foods normally. Your stomach and intestines can also become inflamed and uncomfortable. You may notice common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, like abdominal cramps, constipation and stomach pain.

If diet sodas are your thing, but you’re also experiencing stomach pain, aspartame could be the culprit. The good news is, this natural sweetener isn’t present in regular cola â but beware of the high sugar content in soft drinks without a “diet” label.

Why Does Carbonation Make You Sick to Your Stomach?

Some diet fizzy beverages use certain sweeteners that may cause or increase the risk of stomach bloating and digestive distress. For example, sugar alcohols, which are found in some diet sodas and other diet foods, cause digestive issues such as gas, bloating and even diarrhea in some people. The amount needed to cause gastrointestinal upset varies greatly from person to person. Some people can tolerate a moderate amount of sugar alcohols, while others experience gas or other side effects with small amounts. Sugar alcohols end in “-ol,” which includes sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol. If you see any of these listed in the ingredient list of your diet drink, it’s sweetened with sugar alcohols and may be causing the bloating you’re experiencing.

General stomach discomfort is among the most minor side effects, but it may not seem so minor if you experience these issues. The fizzing bubbles found in carbonated beverages are gas. If you drink these bubbles, they become trapped within your stomach.
