Are Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Products Safe
Health supplements containing probiotics are considered safe in healthy people. However, in very rare cases probiotic supplements may cause bacteremia and sepsis, a blood infection.
One study found only two cases of Lactobacillus blood infection that was caused by the same probiotic strain that was found in the probiotic supplement used by patients.
Another study, however, found that although Lactobacillus blood infections do occur, theyre mostly caused by strains that already reside in peoples bodies.
So taking probiotics is generally considered safe and the risk of them causing a serious blood infection is extremely low. Its much more probable to experience digestive issues such as bloating or diarrhea when you start taking probiotics.
These side effects should ease once your body gets accustomed to the daily doses of probiotics.

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Helps Women Lose Weight
A study carried out on a group of obese men and women shows that women are especially susceptible to Lactobacillus rhamnosus when it comes to weight loss. After 12 weeks women that were taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus supplement lost significantly more weight than women who were taking a placebo.
After the initial 12 weeks, the women who kept taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus for another 12 weeks as maintenance treatment, kept losing weight, as opposed to the placebo group who started putting on weight again.
The interesting bit is that this effect was only observed in women. The reason why Lactobacillus rhamnosus doesnt support weight loss in men is unknown. But its still interesting to know that probiotics can help us lose weight!

What Makes Lactobacillus Probiotics Unsuitable
I am one of those people who do not do so well with lactobacillus probiotics. With;high amounts of L. acidophilus my sleep suffers, I feel foggy, and I experience shortness of breath. The latter feels like;I dont get enough oxygen when breathing in. Air hunger is another term for this sensation a sensation which I suspect has to;do with D-lactate, which is produced by the L. acidophilus, not being metabolized as it should be.
It is wise to remember that we are all different. Our bodies, surroundings, genes and the composition of our intestinal microbiome are all individual. Several different conditions may lead to lactobacillus probiotics becoming unsuitable and perhaps;even harmful.

Why Type Of Probiotics Matter And Adding Prebiotics Could Help
Probiotic strains can have different effects on the upper and lower digestive tract.
For example, infants given the probiotic strains called Bifidobacterium infantis M-63, breve M-16V, and B. longum BB536 helped with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome but did not help with functional dyspepsia symptoms .
Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 are useful in functional constipation but havent shown benefit for acid reflux disease .
Another possible factor that could improve the effectiveness of all probiotic strains is prebiotics, which are fermentable fibers.
Emerging research shows that using prebiotics along with probiotics may have more benefits than using probiotics alone for acid reflux, but more research is needed .
Until then, eating a diet rich in prebiotics is probably a smart idea.;
Different Bacterial Strains Are Linked With Different Health Outcomes
Not all probiotics are created equal. Bacterial strains matter. For example,;Lactobacillus rhamnosus;is a species, and;Lactobacillus rhamnosus;SD-LR6-IT is a strainwithin each species, there are thousands of strains, and they can each have different functions in your body. Just like you wouldnt send a French bulldog to do a sheepdogs work, you have to be specific about what strains youre taking.
So lets break down some of the strongest links to bacteria and probiotics and positive health outcomes.

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg And Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is one form of;inflammatory bowel disease . Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis , are chronic disorders which are collectively referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases . IBD is becoming increasingly common in Western Europe where it affects approximately 50 people in every 100,000. The exact causes of the conditions are unknown, though its believed that genetic factors leading to inappropriate function of the gastrointestinal immune response are key triggers in the development of IBD . Probiotics are receiving considerable attention from scientists in order to fully explore their ability to positively influence immune responses in IBD, and most of the world’s best, most well-researched, probiotics, as featured in this database, will have been used in studies focusing on this outcome.

Intestinal Microbiota Sequencing And Analysis
A total of 96 fresh fecal samples were collected from all four groups in the probiotic experiment at three time points and stored at 80°C. DNA was then obtained via mechanical lysis and phenol/chloroform-based extraction as described previously. Amplification was performed using the V3-V4 primers for 16s rRNA . The samples were loaded into flow cells in an Illumina MiSeq. 300PE Sequencing Platform in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Analyses were performed using QIIME . After filtering for quality, a mean of 85,073±24,497 sequences per sample were retained. Reads were clustered into operational taxonomic units using VSEARCH, and representative sequences for each OTU were aligned and taxonomically assigned using the SILVA database . To characterize diversity, rarefaction was used to obtain 30,000 sequences per sample. Alpha diversity was represented using total species richness and evenness . Beta diversity was represented using UniFrac distances calculated from OTU counts. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.3 and R 3.3.0 .

Bacterial Strains Linked With Improving Cardiovascular Health
The following specific bacterial strains have properties that can promote heart health, such as decrease low-density lipoproteins via bile salts hydrolase activity and improve plasma lipid profiles. A novel important new finding is that some strains significantly reduce p-cresol sulphate, a compound associated with cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease risk.
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Helps Prevent Diarrhea And Relieve Other Digestive Issues
A 2011 research based on a collection of different studies found that taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus significantly decreased pain and pain frequency in children suffering from IBS and other pain causing gastrointestinal issues.
Another study found that consuming Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG can relieve the symptoms of;Travelers diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and recurring;Clostridium difficile;colitis after 3 to 7 days of treatment. It also improves diarrhea in children making its duration shorter and less severe.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus improves the immunity of our gastrointestinal tracts, making us less prone to different types of infections and helping treat the infections faster and more effectively.

Primary Prevention Of Pouchitis
An uncontrolled, retrospective study compared Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG with an untreated control group . The incidence of pouchitis at 3 years was 7% and 29%, respectively .
Two trials have been carried out with the probiotic mixture VSL#3, which contains four strains of lactobacilli , three strains of bifidobacteria , and Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study versus placebo , the product was administered for 12 months to 40 IPPA patients at a dose of 1 sachet/day , with development of pouchitis in only 10% of cases compared with 40% in the placebo group .
In a randomized trial versus no treatment enrolling 31 IPPA patients , only subjects receiving VSL#3 showed at 3, 6, and 12 months a significant reduction in the values of PDAI.
A randomized, prospective study versus placebo employing a different probiotic mixture for 9 months in 43 patients recently submitted to restorative proctocolectomy found a significant reduction in the number of patients with pouchitis, as well as in PDAI scores and levels of fecal calprotectin in the probiotic group . The trial was enrolling both patients without pouchitis and subjects with active pouchitis.
Recently, a very small, pilot study versus placebo from Japan has shown promising results in the primary prevention of pouchitis with Clostridium butyricum MIYARI over a follow-up period of 24 months.

Factors Influencing Probiotic Efficacy
Our review of the literature found efficacy of probiotics may vary according to several factors: mode of therapy, disease indication and strain or strains of probiotic. The choice of an appropriate probiotic is dependent upon all three of these factors, as shown in . The first important factor is the mode of therapy, in that, while a specific probiotic may be effective for the treatment of a disease, it may not show the same degree of efficacy as prevention of the same disease. An example of this mode specificity is seen with acute pediatric diarrhea. One strain of probiotic, L. rhamnosus GG was found to be ineffective for the prevention of acute pediatric diarrhea in one meta-analysis pooling the results of five RCTs 0.301.09) , but was significantly effective for the treatment of acute pediatric diarrhea .

Why L Rhamnosus As A Probiotic
Arguably, there are two main approaches to selecting a strain to be probiotic. The first is to use a species normally abundant at a site, and simply replenish or boost the total count of that species in subjects whose microbiota has shifted to being dysbiotic. The second approach is to select a strain that has specific properties to counter an ailment.
In the case of L. rhamnosus GG, isolated in 1983 in Boston, it was quickly commercialized with the idea that it could provide health benefits, with the first paper suggesting this published in 1993 . Since then, of course, it has become the most researched probiotic strain, primarily for gut health, with over 900 publications on pubmed.
In the case of L. rhamnosus GR-1, the second most scientifically documented L. rhamnosus probiotic, it was discovered in 1981 in Kingston, Ontario, and not commercialized until over 20 years later, in order to acquire as much data on the strain as possible. While it shares some genomic properties with L. rhamnosus GG , its main attributes appear to be the ability to counter pathogenic bacteria and fungi in the urogenital tract . The strain is available for intravaginal administration in Croatia, but due to such applications coming under a drug category in many regions of the world, thereby requiring huge development costs for approval, it has not been approved in other countries for such use.
Has The Probiotic Strain Been Tested And Researched
Clinical studies and research are what distinguish promises from results. Be sure your probiotic is thoroughly studied, tested, and proven. To meet the gold standard, the research should be conducted in humans.
The Culturelle® Probiotic Advantage:
The probiotic strain in Culturelle® – Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is the #1 most clinically studied strain of probiotic. Considered the premier probiotic in the world, over 1,000 scientific studies and over 30 years of research have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG . It is able to survive harsh stomach acid and support a strong barrier against non-beneficial bacteria on the intestinal wall, providing a digestive health advantage.

Probiotics For Overall Health
When purchasing any probiotic for overall health, a person should be aware that there is little research into the health benefits of probiotics and may find it difficult to determine how effective they are.
The health benefits of probiotics are strain-specific, and probiotics for overall health often contain a lot of live microorganisms rather than single strains. This makes it difficult for a person to work out whether research supports the health benefits that the manufacturers claim.
Three probiotic options for overall health include:

In Vivo And In Vitro Evidence
One of the widely studied key features of LGG is its strong adhesive capacity, which has been documented in vitro but also in vivo in humans. LGG has been shown to be a very good mucus adhering Lactobacillus strain compared to related strains such as the dairy strain L. rhamnosus Lc705 and other probiotic strains such as L. johnsonii LJ1 and L. casei Shirota .1A). In human intervention studies, LGG was also reported to persist longer and in higher concentrations compared to closely related strains such as L. rhamnosus LC705 . Orally administered LGG can be recovered from the feces at least one week after administration in adults . Of note, the colonization capacity of LGG appears to be significantly better in newborns , which is related to reduced colonization resistance exerted by a less established microbiota of infants and which is probably a general feature for many probiotic strains. LGG can adhere to intestinal mucus and persist in the descending colon . Colonic biopsies even suggest that LGG colonization continues for longer than indicated by fecal recovery . LGG could also be recovered from the tonsils , vagina and oral cavity after probiotic therapy, but it does not seem as efficient as other Lactobacillus strains in colonizing these niches. LGG seems to show a preferential tissue tropism for the intestinal mucus layer, although these findings could be biased, as only limited studies have investigated the adherence and colonization at other body sites.
