Effects of Rifaximin in Gastrointestinal Diseases

I can only speak to this one from 100% experience.

When I was first diagnosed and/or every time I would relapse, everyone said, You need to take a probiotic;especially if youve been on Rifaximin for a month.;

So I did. It never helped; in fact, I think it made me worse.;

Over time, I have learned that when SIBO relapses I must completely remove the probiotic. If I even feel a hint of SIBO trying to relapse, I remove the probiotic. Works like a charm; every single time.

Your takeaway here: listen to your body. What is it telling you today? If its in misery, consider dropping that probiotic.

What Tests Should My Doctor Consider If Im Having Bloating

Recommended tests include a complete blood count to rule out anemia from gastrointestinal blood loss, a celiac panel blood test , and stool studies if you are having diarrhea.;

However, a breath test for SIBO is now also recommended. This test measures the presence of hydrogen and methane in your breath after you drink a sugary drink. More bacteria in your small intestine produce more hydrogen and methane, which will lead to a positive breath test for SIBO and may indicate small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.;;

Additionally, a new blood test, IBS-Smart, helps rule out IBS and other potential causes of your symptoms. IBS is a disorder that affects the large intestine and can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation.;

Relapse Rates After Sibo Antibiotic Therapy

I think its important to touch on the relapse rates after using antibiotics for SIBO. This helps you make the decision whether to try natural treatments initially or go straight to antibiotics, especially if you have to do multiple courses.

I think you will find that in the long run, its important to incorporate a mostly natural strategy, only using pharmaceuticals when your symptoms are very severe.

In;this study, the aim was to investigate SIBO recurrence in patients after successful antibiotic treatment. They took 80 patients treated with Xifaxan and reassessed them 3, 6, and 9 months after their breath tests normalized. The results are informative and very important for people who use antibiotics to understand.

The Results:

  • 3 months after successful antibiotic treatment 10 patients tested positive for SIBO again indicating relapse
  • 6 months after successful antibiotic treatment 22 patients tested positive for SIBO
  • 9 months after successful antibiotic treatment 35 patients tested positive for SIBO

They also showed that being older, having your appendix out, and chronically using proton pump inhibitors increased the chance of relapse. This means that if you have other health issues that are affecting your gut function you will be more likely to relapse and become a chronic SIBO patient.

You may have read internet advice that;suggests you should never take probiotics;if you have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth;. Since the condition is caused by an excess of bacteria in the small intestine, why would you add more?

However, if you follow that advice, youd be missing out on a research-backed, effective treatment.

Lets discuss how following the research can enable you to overcome SIBO by using probiotics and other safe, effective therapies.

What Does It Mean If Sibo Antibiotics Dont Work

While antibiotics are usually very effective for SIBO , for others, they may not work at all or for only a very short period of time.

This can be very frustrating. So, what does this mean?

This can mean a few things:

  • The SIBO antibiotic protocol was not suitable for your specific gut bacteria
  • You need an additional course of antibiotics or an elemental diet to treat your stubborn microbes
  • You have developed antibiotic resistance, meaning the bacteria are not affected by the antibiotics
  • You dont really have SIBO, but instead a different type of gut dysbiosis or health issue
  • If you relapse very quickly, you may need to focus on figuring out any underlying causes that may be contributing

/13what People Using Blood Thinners Should Know

Some vaccine models, including Covishield and Covaxin, carry an advisory for beneficiaries who might be on blood-thinning medications, which is making many worry and turn sceptical. Blood-thinning medications, as researches have established may cause profuse blood loss, rashes and in some cases, unwelcome swellings too which take longer to heal.

People suffering from bleeding disorders or heart conditions should first check on the type of anticoagulant they are on, before proceeding with the vaccine. Adds Dr Agarwal,

“Patients on blood thinners like Warfarin or newer anticoagulation agents have a small risk of injection site swelling. Patients who are on these newer agents can skip their morning dose, take the vaccine and continue the next regular dose.”

Dr Pandit also advises patients to follow some post-op vaccination care to prevent complications. rather advises patients to check for the type of blood thinners they may be on since they may be a bit more prone to clotting and blood loss after getting the jab. “Those patients on blood thinners, ie. anti-platelets and anti-coagulants can take their vaccines safely. Just ensure adequate compression at the injection site, for a slightly prolonged duration and a finer needle to inject.”

Which Probiotic Are You Taking

Dr. Amy Myers says that for those with SIBO, a soil-based probiotic is best.;

Soil-based probiotics do not exacerbate symptoms of SIBO in the way other types of probiotics can. In fact, one clue that you may have SIBO is that when you take a probiotic containing lactobacillus or bifidobacterium you have an exacerbation of your symptoms such as more gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea or other digestive symptoms. If you are currently dealing with SIBO, its not recommended to take a probiotic containing lactobacillus or bifidobacterium strains until youve eliminated your bacterial overgrowth and repaired your gut, as these can actually worsen your SIBO.

Antibiotics May Cause Sibo And Ibs

We now know that taking antibiotics disrupts our gut flora. The disrupted gut flora can lead to SIBO.; It can also cause IBS by damaging the nerves in the gut.10

Luckily, most of the time our gut flora seems to recover from antibiotics quickly.; However, this isnt the case with everyone.; As microbiology expert Jeroen Raes says in his Brussels TEDx talk on the subject,

;If you get a normal dose of broad-spectrum antibiotics, some of you will recover, in terms of gut flora, after a few weeks. For some of you, it will take months. For some of you it can take over a year for your gut flora to become normal or to return to what it was again. And for some people, they never recover. They have permanently altered their gut flora.

Considering that antibiotics may be the underlying cause of SIBO and IBS, it is ironic that Rifaximin is prescribed for treatment!; If you want to learn more, read how antibiotics can cause IBS.

Why Rifaximin Doesnt Work In The Long Run

Its an understatement to say that gut flora is complex.; Researchers are only now starting to understand the multitude of roles that gut flora has in our daily wellbeing.; Unbalanced gut flora could be at the root of diseases like depression, anxiety, obesity, autism, diabetes, and heart conditions.

Consider that we have;100 trillion bacteria in our intestines alone. ;This is 10x the number of cells we have in our bodies! The research is still in its infancy, but it is really fascinating stuff. ;To learn more, read this article on Gut Flora Dysbiosis.

Antibiotics like Rifaximin indiscriminately kill off ALL bacteria.; They do NOT balance out the bacteria in our guts.

Rifaximin will likely relieve IBS and SIBO symptoms for a short time .; But, once those bacteria start to breed again , the symptoms will only return.

    Prevention Of Bacterial Adherence To Gut Mucosa

    Rifaximin affects epithelial cell physiology resulting in altered infectivity by enteric pathogens, and baseline inflammation, suggesting that rifaximin conferred cytoprotection against bacterial colonization and infection. In fact, rifaximin pretreatment of Enteroaggregative E. coli decreased bacterial adherence to epithelial cells ) without affecting their viability. The mechanism likely involved direct rifaximin-mediated alterations of the HEp-2 cells, which, in turn, affected bacterial adherence . Furthermore, the observation that the effects were time- and concentration-dependent suggested that a rifaximin-mediated process was altering cellular parameters important to Enteroaggregative E. coli adherence. Reduced mucosal attachment may, at least, partially explain the beneficial effects of rifaximin in gastrointestinal diseases.

    COVID vaccines work to generate a robust immune response upon injection. The potential effectiveness of the vaccines may come down to how well your body responds to it.

    For the ones suffering from comorbidities, a slow immune response may be a possibility, in some extreme cases. Usage of some drugs may also make the body ‘busy’, leading to a delayed immune response to the vaccine.

    That being said, if you are someone enlisted to get the vaccine in the coming while, there are certain medicines and therapies which may make you want to double-check with the doctor or postpone an appointment right now.

    Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

    Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is increasingly recognised as a cause of abdominal bloating, pain and diarrhoea. Historically believed to afflict only those who had structural abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract1, it is actually an increasingly common cause of digestive symptoms: up to 78% of individuals with irritable bowel syndrome, one of the most widespread gastrointestinal complaints worldwide, have been found to have SIBO on breath testing2;

    How Long Does It Take For Probiotics to Work? – How Probiotics Work

    According to Neuroscience News,

    Probiotic use may be particularly problematic for patients who have known problems with motility, as well as those taking opioids and proton pump inhibitors, which reduce stomach acid secretion and so the natural destruction of excessive bacteria.

    This helps explain;why probiotics, at certain times during my healing journey, made me miserable. My bottleneck is motility and reduced stomach acid. If this is your root cause, too, this could be the reason you also arent tolerating probiotics.

    Sometimes, SIBO is triggered after an illness while traveling abroad. In that case, a probiotic may be beneficial once you take into consideration the other things below.;

    The key here is that you;must know your root cause. So often, though, we never know the root cause, which probably contributes to a probiotic not working.

    My Overall Thoughts On Xifaxan And Neomycin

    Overall, I would say that my experience using Xifaxan and Neomycin was a negative one.

    However, if I had to make the decision whether or not to use them again to treat SIBO I would still go through with it.

    I would definitely be much more cautious about caring for the health of my other body systems before, during, and after treatment.

    Focusing on liver health and detoxification support is critical when dealing with any sort of gut imbalance or overgrowth.

    Removing the toxins and waste produced from rounds and rounds of antibiotics is a full-time job. And I believe that some of my symptoms were a result of a liver and gallbladder that had just had enough.

    I would also focus on supporting my adrenals and thyroid throughout the entire SIBO treatment process.

    In my SIBO journey, I too often chose to do restrictive diets that heavily taxed my adrenals and thyroid, without a second thought.

    This narrow focus most likely lead to the health issues and adrenal burnout that accompanied my final round of SIBO treatment.

    And, as with any health-related decision, please consult with a trusted medical professional before making any decisions.

    I am so happy to provide you with free resources detailing my experience, but they in no way substitute for the advice of a trained medical professional.

    I truly hope this post was informative and will provide you with the knowledge and tools that you need to take the next step in your gut healing journey.

    Rifaximin Can Have Some Nasty Side Effects

    Drugs.com also lists some of the common side effects of Rifaximin, including:

    • Bloating
    • Stomach pain
    • Swelling of the hands, ankles, feet, or lower legs

    And those are only some of the common Rifaximin side effects not to mention the many less-common side effects!

    It is rather ironic that youd take an antibiotic which causes many of the very same IBS and SIBO symptoms you are trying to cure, and then adds even more symptoms on top of that.

    Optimizing The Gi Environment

    In most situations, people dont think much about what they eat when they take an antibiotic.; If youre taking an antibiotic for a digestive disorder, diet is integral for the healing process.; Eating a proper diet while dropping an antibiotic bomb on the battlefield provides reinforcements to the good guys.; Eating a terrible diet of nutrient poor processed food only helps the bad guys.; Limiting FODMAPS and other fermentables that cause bloating helps to reduce bloating and other symptoms, but it doesnt solve the problem.

    From there, optimizing bile flow and detoxification can be addressed with proper supplementation.; In future posts Ill go over which supplements can help with this.; Probiotics can be effective, but unless youre addressing the GI environment I wouldnt expect much help from them.; Probiotics just wont flourish in an environment that isnt conducive to their growth.; The evidence also indicates that probiotics from pills are only transient in nature.

    Why Rifaximin Is Prescribed For Sibo And Ibs

    Best Probiotic To Take After Antibiotics

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition which affects upwards of 15% of the population.; Yet, until recently, doctors were mostly clueless as to what causes IBS.; The disorder was largely dismissed as stress and patients were told to take it easy and watch what they eat.

    Now, we are finally starting to realize that IBS is a condition caused by dysbiosis of gut flora. In laymans terms, this means that the levels of bacteria in our guts has become unbalanced.

    SIBO is a condition in which there is too much and/or the wrong kind of bacteria in the small intestine.;; Research shows that as many as 84% cases of IBS are really misdiagnosed cases of SIBO!; So, if you have been diagnosed with IBS, there is a good chance that you really have SIBO.

    Since Rifaximin is an antibiotic which kills bacteria in the gut, it should be no surprise that multiple studies have shown it effective in getting rid of IBS and SIBO symptoms.; In 2015, the FDA approved Rifaximin for treating IBS with diarrhea . Rifaximin is often prescribed for treating SIBO.

    *Note that is why diets help for IBS and SIBO.; Those diets all work by removing foods which bacteria feed off of.

    Small Bowel Aspiration And Culture

    SIBO can be diagnosed when there is greater than 103;CFU of bacteria cultured per mL of digestive fluids from the small intestine. This aspiration can be performed on endoscopy, but it is not routinely practised as it is time consuming and expensive, and is an invasive procedure with some risk attached to performing it.

    Concluding Thoughts On Sibo Antibiotics

    If youre thinking about taking SIBO antibiotics like Xifaxan, know that they can work effectively and quickly. However, a course of Xifaxan is very expensive and you may still have side effects. Also,;remember that there is a chance you may relapse once you stop taking the antibiotics.

    If you are someone who is dealing with a stubborn case of SIBO- and willing to spend the money on Xifaxan- it can be a good option. On the other hand, if you dont want to spend as much money and want to take a gentler long-term approach, using a natural treatment protocol may be your best bet. Using herbal antibiotics, the elemental diet or long-term diet changes can be just as effective as antibiotics.
