How It Works- There is a lack of scientific research into the effectiveness of ginger for IBS sufferers. However this is not to say that there is not plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest a link to drinking ginger tea and a reduction in IBS symptoms. It is though to decrease inflammation and promote movement in the intestines, in a much more gentle way than caffeine!

Warnings & Side Effects- Some user report heartburn, diarrhea, burping and general stomach discomfort. If this should occur discontinue using ginger as a herbal tea.

Herbal Tea Recipe You will need a piece of fresh ginger root, one inch or roughly the length of the end of your thumb. Thinly slice it and pop into your tea ball or teapot with built in infuser. A note on Oolong:We do not know what kind of oolong teas were lab tested. If you tolerate black tea and green tea well, it would be worth Challenging yourself with oolong tea, when you are stable, to determine your digestive reactions if you are interested in having oolong tea.

Although Monash has lab tested chai, they have not detailed what it was that they tested. Was it based on black tea? What spices were present and in what concentrations? Because of this, the app listing is fairly unhelpful and therefore I have not included chai in our charts.

Same goes for herbal tea. Monash has an herbal tea listed in the app, but without knowing what herb or herbs were tested, this is a useless entry.

A note on Matcha.We get many questions about matcha, which is simply ground green tea. It is true that green tea has been lab tested and we know low FODMAP amounts, but that is for an infusion of leaves. When you drink matcha, you are ingesting the entire leaf. The FODMAP content is bound to be different, and higher.

No one knows the FODMAP content of matcha, as it has not been lab tested. Our suggestion is that if you tolerate brewed green tea well and also tolerate caffeine, you could try it yourself when you are stable during your Challenge Phase.

All the teas are produced from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plants, but what makes them different is how the leaves are ultimately processed and oxidized. Black teas fully oxidized, while green tea has zero oxidation.

Is Decaf Green Tea Ok For Ibs

We know caffeine in green tea may aggravate the IBS symptoms, therefore, decaffeinated green tea is considered more healthy for gut health. Decaf green tea is a caffeine-free version of tea.

However, it is also lower in nutritional profile than regular high-quality green tea. Nonetheless, it helps the stomach in promoting digestion and easing bowel movements. As for IBS, decaffeinated green tea will not cause any problem, instead, it helps to ease its symptoms.

However, always choose high-quality decaf green tea for IBS cure and gut health.

Fennel Herbal Tea And Ibs Treatment

Flavor- Has a clear anise or licorice flavor. You can use the seeds or leaves in herbal teas.

How It Works- A study of 121 patients found a significant reduction in symptoms of IBS and a high increase in stated quality of life. This was when they were given curcumin and fennel together. I have popped a recipe together below for just such a herbal tea! Fennel is known to have anti-spasmodic effects which can significantly reduce the cramps and resulting diarrhea in IBS sufferers. There is also a known calming effect of fennel and this can be very useful to reducing stress.

Warnings & Side Effects- Always consult a medical professional before taking fennel as it may interact with certain medicines. Pregnant women are not recommended to use fennel essential oils or to take in tea form.

Herbal Tea Recipe 2 tablespoons of crushed fennel seeds to every cup of tea. Steep in a tea ball in boiled water for around 10 minutes. In the Summer months you can also use fresh fennel leaves from the garden for amore gentle taste, especially when popped in with fresh chamomile flowers too!

After eliminating the big offenders, it may seem like theres nothing left to drink. Not so. Take a look at all of the beverages on the thumbs up list.

  • Fruit Juices Its perfectly appropriate to drink juices made from cranberries, bananas, grapefruits, lemons, grapes, and pineapples as long as they dont contain corn syrup. Its best when the juice is made fresh from organic fruits without added sugar, Solomon says. But if you do want to sweeten it up, choose a small amount of white sugar or the sweeteners Stevia or Splenda if you can tolerate them.
  • Vegetable Juices There are several vegetables that are low in FODMAPs that are perfect for juicing. Make a tasty juice using carrots, celery, chives, broccoli, cucumber, ginger, parsley, pumpkin, spinach, the green part of scallions, tomatoes, zucchini, yams, turnips, taro, squash, and eggplant.
  • Choosing decaf coffee or tea shouldnt be a problem, Solomon says. Or try caffeinated tea but make it weak.
  • Herbal Tea Herbal tea doesnt contain caffeine and is a great choice hot or iced.
  • Ginger Drinks Ginger teas, punches, or beers are on the safe list as long as they dont contain high fructose corn syrup, honey, or other sweeteners on the high FODMAP list.
  • Dairy-Free Milk Rice milk, soy milk, oat milk, and lactose-free milk are all dairy-free milks and are low in FODMAPs.

    More research is needed to understand the potential benefits of ginger for treating IBS symptoms. At this time, theres no consensus on the best dose or form. Many studies use daily doses of 1 to 2 grams per day.

    If you chose to take ginger to treat your IBS symptoms, you can take it in whichever form you like best. Ginger tea, powder, fresh root, and capsules are all widely available options.

    If you choose to drink ginger tea, you may want to make it with ginger powder so that you know how much ginger youre consuming.
