What Is Acid Reflux

Use Probiotics for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is when acid and other stomach contents come back up the esophagus. This can cause heartburn, chest pain, and regurgitation. If your acid reflux symptoms occur more than twice a week, you may have progressed to having a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, otherwise known as GERD.

If your acid reflux has reached this level you may encounter more symptoms, such as:

Dysphagia, narrowing of the esophagus

If you have acid reflux or feel that youve progressed to GERD, its important to see a medical health professional.

Recovery Of Viable Yogurt Strains In Trial 2

Fecal colonies from day 2 samples and from day 7 samples were replica plated onto MRS and LM17. Higher numbers of colonies were investigated for day 2 in order to confirm the reliability of m-RSMA for distinguishing between enterococci, lactobacilli, and streptococci.

The presence of L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus in feces was confirmed for 6 of 10 human subjects on day 2, and the number increased by day 7, when orally administered Lactobacillus was present in 7 volunteers .1). The fecal counts for L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, as confirmed by using strain-specific molecular tools, appeared to increase in trial 1 ,2), which confirmed the improved performance of m-RSMA compared to the performance of RSMA.

Rep-PCR strain-specific profiles of yogurt cultures and fecal isolates are shown in Fig. .

How Do Probiotics Help With Acid Reflux

The answer is that although there is not a wealth of research on this yet, there is a growing field of thought that probiotics can indeed help alleviate acid reflux. We already know that probiotics are a highly useful way of rebalancing the gut bacteria but can they help combat H. pylori? It is thought that probiotics can help in several ways. Probiotics are thought to help strengthen the barrier against H. pylori by producing antimicrobial substances, and competes with H. pylori for adhesion receptors, i.e. space on the stomach lining! Its also thought to stabilise the gut mucosal barrier. Some argue also that the production of relatively large amounts of lactate by Lactobacilli is also an inhibitory factor of H. pylori3 as its possible it might lower the H.pylori urease. Additionally probiotics may be able to modify inflammation levels by interacting with the epithelial cells and managing the secretion of inflammatory proteins.

A meta analysis in the World Journal of Gastroenterology4 concluded that The use of probiotics plus standard therapy was associated with an increase in the H. pylori eradication rate, and a reduction in adverse events resulting from treatment in the general population.

Can probiotics help with acid reflux?

A 2020 systematic review investigated the effects of probiotics on GERD. The authors looked at 13 studies of varying quality, 11 of which found that probiotics had some benefit for acid reflux. The specific benefits are below:

  • One study noted improvements in reflux or heartburn.
  • Five studies noted improvements in shortness of breath.
  • Three studies noted a reduction in regurgitation.
  • Nine studies noted improvements in other gastrointestinal symptoms, such as:

2019 study investigated the effect of probiotic supplements in adults taking the PPI esomeprazole for reflux esophagitis. Over 8 weeks, one group of participants took esomeprazole with a probiotic, while a second group took esomeprazole with a placebo.

At 12 weeks, the researchers assessed the participants with cured esophagitis. The group that had received the probiotic had lower rates of SIBO and decreased diarrhea.

A 2018 study looked at the effects of probiotics on SIBO in children with GERD. The 12-week study included 128 participants with GERD and 120 without it. The researchers divided the children with GERD into two groups. One received a PPI with probiotics, and the other received the same PPI with a placebo.

At the end of the trial, the children who took probiotics had lower rates of SIBO, compared with those who took a placebo. These lower rates were similar to those of children without GERD.

and Enterococcus faecium. Any of these may help with acid reflux.

When Natural Treatments May Not Be Enough

There may be some cases when an entirely natural approach is not enough. When there is tissue damage in the esophagus, for example, a surgical procedure called gastroplication which repairs the LES valve may be necessary. These procedures dont have the potential to create nutrient deficiencies and disease the way acid blockers do. It is advisable for anyone suffering from a severe case of GERD to consult with a knowledgeable physician.

Research Interpretation Of Probiotics For Gerd

All in all, these probiotic strains are very well tolerated and improve various reflux symptoms. Some of these probiotic varieties even reduce SIBO.

It is important to note that the studies first ruled out helicobacter pylori infections, which can be a source of acid reflux.

One study used probiotics as an add-on to proton pump inhibitors , which are the standard of care for treatment for treating GERD-related symptoms. The added benefit of probiotics was impressive.

The use of probiotics in this study had superior benefit to PPI alone .

Another PPI study in children found that adding probiotics to their treatment helped to ameliorate almost all of the dysbiosis that resulted from the medication .

When Should I Take Probiotics

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best time to take probiotics will vary depending on the person’s individual needs and situation. However, some general guidelines can be provided:

1) Probiotics should generally be taken on an empty stomach, either before meals or between meals. This is because food can interfere with the absorption of the probiotics.

2) If you are taking a probiotic supplement, it is best to take them at least 2 hours after taking any antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill off beneficial bacteria in the gut, including the bacteria that make up probiotics, so it is important to wait for a while after taking antibiotics before taking probiotics.

For people with acid reflux, it’s important to avoid these trigger foods as much as possible to help reduce symptoms.

It’s also important to eat slowly and chew food thoroughly to reduce the amount of air swallowed, which can increase the likelihood of acid reflux.

Additionally, staying well hydrated can help keep stomach acids in check.

Acid Reflux And Imbalanced Gut Bacteria

Natural Treatment For Acid Reflux – Diet, Probiotics & HCl

Reflux symptoms are commonly perpetuated by gut dysbiosis and/or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth .

In the case of SIBO, bacteria translocate from the large intestine to the small intestine inappropriately, where they then ferment carbohydrates.

Both the fermentation and the presence of bacteria in the small intestine can lead to several physiological changes including decreased gastric motility, prolonged relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, and increased intraabdominal pressure.

These terms might sound complicated, but ultimately all you need to know is that these physiological changes have been implicated in causing reflux episodes.

How Antibiotics Lead To Acid Reflux

We all know that antibiotics are drugs used for treating bacterial infections in the body. The gastrointestinal tract has a combination of symbiotic and beneficial bacteria called probiotics as well as potentially infective bacteria. Good bacteria keep the growth of bad bacteria in check. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not able to differentiate between the good and bad bacteria present in the gut. They kill the probiotic bacterial population as well. This leads to an imbalance in the intestinal ecosystem and an overgrowth of bad bacteria that produce a lot of gas. The pressure within the stomach increases because of the gases. This pressure forces the LES to relax to release the gases out of the body. And as seen above, a relaxed LES causes food and acid to ride back up the pipe.

Thats why, taking antibiotics with food may lead to discomfort and irritation in the stomach. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat a host of infections, such as acne, cholera, malaria and syphilis. It has been shown to cause acid reflux. Doctors recommend a judicious use of antibiotics to limit their harmful side effects.

Rebuilding gut bacteria is highly important for cutting through the negative effects of using antibiotics. Adding probiotics to your diet can help in reducing the symptoms of acid reflux.

Probiotics Proven To Aid Acid Reflux

Probiotics come in varying strains, and not every probiotic works the same. They can affect different processes or result in varying outcomes. You can even make your own probiotic drinks at home. But, which probiotics should you look for? Here are probiotic strains that can directly aid symptoms of acid reflux.

Do Probiotics Help Acid Reflux In Infants

The primary outcome for infants was reduction of regurgitation in the probiotic group . Secondary outcomes included the number of stools the infants passed, growth rate, and number of hospitalizations or doctor visits for the condition. Adverse events were also assessed. Infants treated with probiotics had significantly more stools than those not treated with probiotics.

In a prospective observational study, Deshpande et al. found that the exclusive use of proton-pump inhibitors was reduced in preterm infants after probiotic treatment. These drugs reduce the acid secretion in the stomach. Similarly, a systematic review of infant probiotics found no evidence that probiotics reduce acid production. However, this did not rule out the use of probiotics in infants, but does not prove that they help acid reflux.

One possible mechanism of probiotics in the treatment of GERD is the modulation of the esophageal microbiome. Lactobacillus gasseri, for example, is known to increase pepsin production, which may improve digestion and absorption. Probiotics have been proven to be beneficial for infants with GERD due to their role in modulating the esophageal microbiome.

One way to maximize the effectiveness of probiootics for acid reflux is to take them with a good quality prebiotic supplement. For best results, take a prebiotic first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast.
