Can Constipation Cause Bladder Pain

Recognizing A Chronic Problem

Can Constipation Cause A Urinary Tract Infection?

So, how can you recognize chronic constipation and put an end to it before it causes your child even more discomfort? Know the symptoms.

The most common symptoms of chronic constipation include:

  • Changes in appetite, including your child suddenly becoming full very easily
  • Constant or frequent abdominal pain and cramps
  • Irritability
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Urinary problems as a result of an enlarged rectum leaving less room for the bladder to expand — this means your child will need to urinate more frequently and they may get urinary tract infections or bladder infections

If you notice these changes in your childs bathroom habits and overall attitude and behavior, it is time to call the pediatrician. Your doctor will be able to set you and your child on the right path and will come up with a treatment plan based on your kids symptoms.

Constipation, even if it is chronic, is usually easily resolvable, and your doctor may prescribe certain laxatives or stool softeners to make your childs return to normal a little bit easier. Your doctor will likely also advise you to keep your child on a high fiber diet for a period of time since fiber helps keep things moving along through the digestive system. In fact, insufficient fiber may have been what caused the problem in the first place.

Tips For Increasing Fiber

How do you know if you are getting enough fiber? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends 25 to 38 grams of fiber daily. Check out the list of IC-friendly sources of fiber.

If youre not getting enough fiber, use the list to choose foods to add to increase your fiber intake. Check out the serving size for each of these items. You may find it helpful to measure quantities to get a sense of how many servings you typically eat. Two items that some people may find helpful for irregularity are a small glass of prune juice daily and 1-2 tablespoon flax each day.

When you are increasing fiber, you must make sure you drink enough fluids. Increasing fiber without getting enough liquids can make constipation worse. A rule of thumb: the more fiber you consumer, the more water you need.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Use the following calculation to figure out how much you need to drink every day.

1/2 body weight converted into ounces

For example: 100/2 = 50 ounces

During pregnancy this will increase, plus every day will be slightly different based on your activity level and the weather. So start with your base and change from there. Keep in mind that too much fiber without enough water can constipate you as well, so be sure to increase your water intake if you are adding fiber into your diet.

Dietary Tips For Managing Constipation

Try to drink at least 4-6 glasses of fluid a day and increase your fibre intake from a wide variety of foods. Fibre is classified as either soluble or insoluble. Most plant foods contain a combination of both types of fibre. Insoluble fibre such as wheat bran, wholegrain breads and cereal helps increase the dry weight and ability of bowel motions to hold moisture. Soluble fibre such as in fruits, vegetables and legumes help to soften the poo and make it easier to pass.

Processed foods such as biscuits, cakes, pastries and fast foods are generally low in fibre and will contribute to constipation. Fruit and vegetable juice contain little fibre and are not a good substitute for whole fruit and vegetables.

Constipation With Bladder Cancer Can Be Horrendous

IBS and Your Gallbladder

I mean that literally. Any number of things can cause it: stress, medications, lack of water, or even a poor diet. The hardest part is that we already have pain and spasms from our bladder cancer, and now on top of this, we are adding intestinal pain, constant heaviness, cramping, nausea, and so much more.

Is your child urgently running to the bathroom and having urinary accidents? Is your child experiencing urinary tract infections or pain with urination? Urinary problems and UTIs occur in many children and can affect family, social and school life. In many cases, your childs pediatrician can perform a simple urine test to see whether simple treatments, like antibiotics, can resolve the problem. If treatment doesnt resolve the issue, though, your childs urinary problem may be caused by something most parents wouldnt suspect: trouble with number two.

Constipation or incomplete bowel emptying is a very common contributor to urinary problems. The bladder and bowel are controlled by the same nerves and are next to each other in the body.

How to Know if Constipation is Causing Your Childs Urinary Troubles

Parents are not always aware of childrens bowel habits after they become toilet-trained. First, try asking your child whether they have any of the following symptoms of constipation:

  • Infrequent stools
  • Hard stools
  • Painful stools or straining
  • Large bowel movements

Constipation is often treated with laxatives and stool softeners, though results can sometimes be maintained on a high fiber diet. There are some things you can safely try at home, after consulting your childs doctor, to address constipation as a possible cause of urinary issues. A large number of patients will experience urinary symptom relief after starting a bowel regimen.

Tips for preventing constipation:

Piriformis Pain And Constipation Symptoms

Constipation is possible in patients who suffer reduced neurological signal in the pudendal nerve. Although the nerve can not wholly responsible for creating all types of constipation, it can contribute to some distinct forms. Minor or transitory compression of the nerve might be related to injury, anatomical position or other circumstances and may result in one time or occasional episodes of mild to moderate constipation. Chronic pudendal compression can result in persistent constipation which can lead to serious health problems, as well as a high degree of discomfort.

Other symptoms of pudendal nerve entrapment by the piriformis muscle include sexual dysfunction in both men and women, incontinence of bladder and/or bowels and a diversity of severe symptoms including pain, burning, numbness and weakness in the groin, genitals, perineum, pelvic floor and anal regions.

Why Do Bladder And Bowel Incontinence Happen

Can Constipation Cause Back Pain On One Side?

When the bladder and bowel function normally, nerves tell certain muscles when to tense up and when to relax. Nerves in the spinal cord send messages from the brain to the bladder. Sphincter muscles control the flow of urine. Muscles in the rectum and anus control or release stool. These nerve and muscle processes allow urine and feces to be removed when you want them to.

Study Design And Procedure

Primary objective of this study is to evaluate whether Overactive Bladder Symptoms Score of female patients with latent FC is higher than that of patients without latent FC at the urological department of the general hospital or not. For the secondary objectives are to investigate the associated factors for latent FC and mild to moderate OAB, wet OAB, and dry OAB. Sample size was determined by the free software of Vanderbilt University.

Urinary symptoms were evaluated by OABSS and constipation was evaluated by the Rome III criteria. The OABSS was developed to assess the presence and severity of OAB symptoms as a self-administered four-item questionnaire . OAB was defined as OABSS 3 and Q3 2 and it was classified into wet OAB, which was OAB with urinary incontinence, and dry OAB, which was OAB without urinary incontinence. OAB was also classified into three severity categories as follows: mild OAB , moderate OAB , and severe OAB . The Rome III criteria include six items related to defecation: straining, lumpy hard stools, sensation of incomplete evacuation, use of digital maneuvers, sensation of anorectal obstruction or blockage with 25 percent of bowel movements, and decrease in stool frequency . Latent FC was defined by positivity for two or more of the Rome III criteria . The clinical background was also investigated, including the medical history and drug therapy .

What Are The Symptoms Of Urinary Retention

  • Difficulty starting a urine stream
  • Weak flow of urine
  • Feel the need to urinate after voiding
  • Small amount of leakage

For acute bladder retention, initial treatment will involve catheterization, a small tube inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain the urine and relieve immediate pain and distention. Long-term treatment will depend on the cause.

Symptoms Of Chronic Constipation

Most typically, when we think of constipation, we think of hard and painful bowel movements, but there are many other symptoms than can occur.

In many children with chronic constipation, the large intestine gets stretched out of shape and the child passes extremely large bowel movements sometimes so large they clog the toilet!

Because of the pain associated with bowel movements, some young children will refuse to pass bowel movements or even attend to the toilet. This can lead to all sorts of conflicts and behavioral difficulties.

When children with chronic constipation pass very large or hard bowel movements they may open up small tears or rips at their anal opening called anal fissures. These are not dangerous, but they can be extremely painful and are often associated with some bleeding with bowel movements. This can be very frightening for parents and children. The fissures tend to occur in little folds of skin at the anal opening and so they may take a long time to heal, much like a paper cut on a knuckle that constantly gets re-opened when you bend your finger.

Many children with chronic constipation complain of frequent abdominal pain or cramps and they are often quite irritable and/or disagreeable.

Some children with chronic constipation have recurrent attacks of nausea and vomiting. This is because the stomach empties much more slowly than usual when someone becomes constipated.

Why Constipation Causes Uti

Chronic constipation can cause bladder infection in many ways. As you can see in the image below, the rectum and urinary bladder are located in the pelvis.

When you are constipated, the hard stools accumulate in the rectum. The fecal loading causes distension of the rectum.

Because the rectum and bladder are closely situated, rectal distension can compress the bladder neck.

The pressure over the bladder neck causes incomplete emptying of the bladder. That means after passing urine, a significant volume of urine remains in the bladder.

The accumulation of urine facilitates the growth of bacteria such as E.coli that cause infection.

People with long term constipation often suffer from painful anal conditions such as anal fissure and thrombosed hemorrhoids. Pain around the anus interferes with urination. This is another reason that you get UTI while constipated. It can be clearly seen in toddlers who are suffering from anal fissure due to chronic constipation.

Urinary tract infections are common when you are pregnant. One of the main reasons for that is pregnancy-related constipation.

Disrupted Flora & Uti

Most importantly, constipation can lead to high levels of the Escherichia coli bacteria in the rectum, increasing the risk that they could spread to the urinary tract. If you think about the reasons for constipation, they often include poor diet and an inactive lifestyle. Both factors also contribute to and are connected with the diversity of your gut microbiome. It is still unclear if a change in microbiome is a cause or a consequence of constipation but

Treatment For Ibs And Urinary Problems

There are several treatment options that can help with both urinary problems and IBS. However, the most appropriate methods will depend on the exact cause:

Overactive Bladder Syndrome

People with OAB and IBS may benefit from treatment with anticholinergic drugs. They work by targeting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to regulate smooth muscle contractions in the bladder and bowel.

Another option is tricyclic antidepressants. These medicines alter activity in the central nervous system to control bowel and bladder activity.

In severe cases, Botox injections may be useful as they can help to relax the bladder muscles.

Interstitial Cystitis

Tricyclic antidepressants may also be useful for treating interstitial cystitis. In addition, doctors may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve inflammation and pain.

Another medication for interstitial cystitis is a drug called Elmiron. However, this medicine can thin the blood and patients should not use it alongside NSAIDs.

Finally, treatments such as physical therapy, biofeedback and nerve stimulation may offer some relief.

Chronic Prostatitis

In some cases, prostatitis can be the result of an infection. Therefore, antibiotics may be an effective treatment.

Anticholinergic medications and drugs called alpha blockers might also help. The latter work by blocking adrenaline receptors to relax smooth muscle.

How Is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider will usually start by asking about your symptoms and taking a careful medical history. Your provider may ask you the following questions:

Your provider may also do a physical exam to test how well you can control your pelvic floor muscles. Using their hands, your provider will check for spasms, knots or weakness in these muscles. Your provider may also need to give you an intrarectal exam or vaginal exam.

You may also be given other tests including:

Remedies For Uti Due To Constipation

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Or Gallbladder Pain

The infection should be treated with a suitable antibiotic. You should see your doctor and get an antibiotic.

Drinking plenty of water will produce enough urine flow and help clear the infection.

Reducing the acidity of the urine can help control the infection and reduce the symptoms. There are many over the counter preparations available such as Ural, Citralite, and Citravescent.

Want a home remedy? Then try cranberry juice. Studies show that drinking cranberry juice can help prevent UTI. However, cranberry juice is not enough to treat a full-blown bladder infection.

Relieving your constipation is one of the top priorities in the treatment. Taking an over the counter laxative can be a quick fix for your problem.

To get a long term relief, you should eat fiber-rich foods. Alternatively, you can use a fiber supplement such as Metamucil.
