How Much To Take

Constipation (Poop) on X Ray | Dr. Alan Nathans

Doses vary depending on the type of medicine, the brand and the amount of simeticone in it. The dose is lower for babies.

For wind, the usual dose is between 100mg and 250mg. You can take the medicine as required, up to 3 or 4 times a day. Its usually taken after meals and at bedtime.

For colic in babies, the usual dose is between 20mg and 40mg, given before each feed, up to 6 times a day.

Diarrheathere May Be Many Causes

In the GI world, there is a stricter definition of diarrhea than one might think.

Its not just watery stool or stool with no consistency, but also increased volume. People often come to me and say they are having diarrhea, but when you get into the fine details and find out they are pooping once or twice a day, thats not it really, Dr. Deutsch says. Still, its maybe not your normal. And I need to know if it holds shape or if its just literally water coming out.

Dr. Deutsch says it is important to find out if there is any blood, which could be an indication of an inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohns or ulcerative colitis, both of which involve chronic inflammation in the digestive tract and cause persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloody stool, weight loss, and fatigue.

She says she also wants to know if someone is having accidents. If its just a sensation that you cant get to the bathroom in time, but you do get there, that is easy to fix, she says. Common factors may be lactose intolerance or things like bacteria that exist in your gut. They do many jobs, but they can also draw too much water into your stool and give you diarrhea.

Gas Pain: When To See A Doctor

Veloso says to be on the lookout for abdominal pain and bloating that persists even after constipation improves.

You may have celiac disease or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth , which can cause these symptoms and can occur with either constipation or diarrhea. You may also have irritable bowel syndrome or another problem, she notes.

What About The Solution

There are some very useful natural ways, to improve your digestive health and reduce gas forming and heart palpitations.

1. Ginger capsules- 500 milligram of ginger root taken three times a day after the meal, improves your digestive health

2. Burping- It eliminates the gas within the stomach, and, therefore, reduces the stomach pressure over the vagus nerve. Simethicone is a drug which prompts burping.

3. Change position- Changing position might take the pressure off your stomach. Experiment with the positions until finding one that works best for you.

4. Deep breathing- Breathing deep relaxes and lifts anxiety situations, which is one of the causes of gas- formation.

5. Diet- Eliminate the intake of the foods that cause gas- formation. In case of having gluten intolerance or fructose intolerance, do not eat foods containing them.

6. Keep your bowels moving- In case of constipation, take precautions to eliminate it, such as eating liquid foods, exercising, laxatives etc.

In case of suffering from diseases that affect pancreas, liver of gallbladder, consult with your doctor. Treating the underlying disease will also treat gas and heart palpitations

Whats That Going On In My Stomach: Can You Do Anything About It

Post

A friend complains that shes often queasy when she wakes up in the morning.

Another mentions that he cannot eat fast food anymore without regretting it for hours.

I learned what gas and bloating was when I was pregnant with my third child. That child is now 12, and my 50-something body is revisiting this two-pronged annoyance.

Are these changes normal? Do they result from age-related changes? Are they something to be checked out by a doctor?

John Clarke, a gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins University, says there are changes in the body from mouth to stomach to bowels that occur with age that may account for many minor digestive issues.

Before we tour the gastrointestinal tract, lets listen to Colleen Christmas, an expert in geriatric medicine at Hopkins.

Everybodys body slows down, she agrees, but that doesnt necessarily mean it will cause problems. Most times, age-related changes in your gut will go unnoticed.

The two big exceptions are constipation and diverticulosis, Christmas says. Diverticulosis is a condition, not a disease, she says. Its little pockets where the intestine has ballooned out. Its pretty uncommon before age 40, but almost all 80-year-olds have it. Not all 80-year-olds are aware of it, though, as it is often a symptomless condition. When problems do occur, people may experience abdominal pain and fever.

Why Does Constipation Cause Gas

What Causes Constipation? Why Can’t I Go #2?

One reason for that is that constipation causes waste materials to stay in your body longer than they should. One of the constipation side effects that can result from that is a build up of bacteria in the intestines and other areas of the body. Many of the resulting bacteria types can then produce more gas.

Does Constipation Cause Gas

Yes, Veloso says. Anything that slows down the digestive process, such as a low-fiber diet, use of opioid medications or an anticholinergic drug can put the brakes on timely bowel function.

Veloso says eating a diet rich in fiber, staying hydrated and exercising is a good long-term approach for beating bouts of gas and cramping. If these measures dont improve constipation and gas, a polyethylene glycol laxative can help, she notes.

How To Get Rid Of Gas Pain

If youve ever experienced waves of sharp pain in your belly along with the feeling that your waistline is inflating like a balloon, you might be experiencing bloating and cramps due to intestinal gas.

Everyone gets gas on occasion. Its a natural byproduct of the bacteria in your intestines doing their job and breaking down the fibers, sugars and starches in the food you eat. Though gas pain is usually nothing serious, the discomfort can be intense.

Intestinal gas and its discomfort are likely to resolve on their own. Burping or passing gas through the rectum is usually enough to ease your physical discomfort.

Johns Hopkins gastroenterologist Hazel Marie Galon Veloso provides some perspective on bloating and gas cramps, including when to see a doctor.

10 Ways To Relieve Constipation Fast and Naturally

As a pediatrician, parents often bring newborns into my office for common tummy troubles. A newborns digestive system is still in the process of developing so it makes sense that they will have some difficulty as it matures. Here are three of the most common newborn tummy troubles and what we can do about them:

1) Gas

Because a babys digestive system is still developing, air can get trapped-known as gas. It is important to note that gas is a natural product of the bacteria that line the digestive tract and babies swallow air when feeding. So many babies can be gassy. It is only when babies are fussier than normal, arching, squirming or are significantly relieved after passing gas that this may be a cause for concern.

To help a baby suffering with gas, first have your child evaluated by a pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis and also to exclude any dietary causes. Since babies suck in air while feeding, its important to burp your baby during and after feeding to relieve some of the gas. Bottle fed babies can take in a lot of air during feeding so by making sure that the nipple of the bottle is filled with milk before giving it to your baby, you can decrease some of the air that gets ingested. If those methods dont work you can try gas drops like Mommys Bliss Gas Relief which provide a small dose of simethicone to help break up bubbles in a babys tummy.

2) Colic
3) Constipation

Pancreas Liver Or Gallbladder Affections

a. Pancreas insufficiency- in this conditions the pancreatic enzymes are reduced or stopped from entering the small intestines. This causes indigestion and, therefore, gas formation which can lead to heart palpitations.

b. Biliary stasis- caused by numerous problems, such as gallstones, cholecystitis, gallbladder cancer, cholecystectomy , hepatitis, cirrhosis etc. It prevents the entering of bile in the intestines, causing thus indigestion. Indigestion can lead to gas- formation in the intestines, which can cause heart palpitations.

Subsequently, question is, does simethicone cause constipation in newborns? It seems like she’s in pain. Simethicone is generally a safe medication for babies. It could cause loose stools, but that is uncommon.

Just so, does simethicone help with constipation?

GasX and Phazyme both contain simethicone, which help small gas bubbles coalesce into larger ones that are easier to pass. Laxatives for constipation come in a couple of forms Mirolax helps water stay in the stool, and Senna is a plant-derived mixture that stimulates fluids and motility in the bowel.

Does simethicone make you fart?

Although a little trapped gas in the gastrointestinal tract is normal, stress or foods with lots of starch can result in more gas productionand large amounts of trapped gas bubbles can cause you to notice it. Simethicone reduces the surface tension of the formed gas bubbles, which prevents bubble formation.

If you’ve ever gotten the runs while running, you know that exercise has a regulating effect on the body. Inactivity does the complete opposite: “A low level of physical activity is a major risk factor for constipation,” says James-Stevenson. “This is likely related to decreased gut movement and less blood flow to the gut.” So if your pooping schedule isn’t quite up to par, skipping out on your fitness routine isn’t going to make your situation any better.

“Exercise increases blood flow to the vital organs of the body, including the digestive tract, and increases your metabolism,” says Shah. Any type of exercise is helpful in combatting constipationincluding walking, running, biking, swimming, yoga, and moreso pick your favorite and go nuts.

“Iron and calcium supplements can cause constipation, as they can both slow down the contractions of the GI system,” says Joann Kwah, M.D., attending gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. But proceed with caution: These vitamins are typically recommended by doctors if you have a specific deficiency. So if you have a medical condition that requires you to take them and the side effects are kicking you right in the gut, you can always ask your physician for alternative options .
