Quality Fish Oil Supplements

Why does fish oil cause burps & stomach discomfort?

High-quality fish oil capsules such as are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They go through a process for purification that provides a cleaner fish oil for your consumption. Some get help with their acid reflux by consuming these capsules or fish. Omega-3s help to reduce the risk of many diseases including cancer, arthritis, and heart disease and also have the potential to lessen the inflammation that is involved with acid reflux.

Four Surprising Causes Of Heartburn

Heartburn, regurgitation, and other symptoms of GERD result when the acidic contents of the stomach back up up into the esophagus. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter , a ring of muscle at the top of the stomach, relaxes to allow the food you swallow into your stomach and then closes to keep the contents of the stomach in the stomach. When the LES relaxes inappropriately, the contents of the stomach can flow back up, irritating the sensitive lining of the esophagus, resulting in the symptoms youre probably all too familiar with.

Your Blood Pressure May Go Down

Omega-3 supplementation may help reduce blood pressure levels in people with hypertension.

“According to NIH research, omega-3 fatty acids work by directly activating large-conductance calcium-dependent potassium channels in the blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure,” says Angela Marshall, MD, a board-certified internist and the CEO of Comprehensive Women’s Health.

Fish oil supplements with a moderate amount of DHA and EPA were found to lower blood pressure by 5 mmHg in people with systolic hypertension, per a March 2016 study in The Journal of Nutrition. Though it might not sound like a lot, that 5-point decrease could potentially lead to a 20 percent reduction in heart disease risk, according to the researchers.

For now, the majority of the research supports a well-balanced, low-sodium diet packed with fruits, vegetables, heart-healthy fats , lean proteins and whole grains over fish oil supplements for lowering blood pressure levels.

Fish Oil Side Effects & Adverse Reactions

Can Fish Oil Cause Heartburn

Fish oil is among the most popular dietary supplements in the world. Everyone making an attempt to optimize their physical health and brain performance has at least considered supplementing omega-3 fatty acids. The most common way to supplement the omega-3s is by taking fish oil. The fact that fish oil supplements are able to lower triglycerides, improve cardiovascular health, and possibly prevent neurodgeneration has made them a hot commodity.

Although fish oil has become a popular supplement, many people have learned that it can elicit unwanted side effects. A common misconception is that because fish oil is a supplement, that it cannot possibly have negative side effects. The reality is that many people can experience significant side effects, and may actually be damaging their health with fish oil by ignoring any signs of an adverse reaction.

Does Fish Oil Help With Heartburn

What is the connection between taking fish oil and heartburn? I was told that fish oil can help treat both heartburn and GERD . What about constipation?

Andrew Weil, M.D. | February 9, 2017

Fish oil found in the fatty tissues of cold-water fish, is a source of the two essential omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA . We all need these to maintain long-term health, to reduce our risks of heart disease and cancer, to decrease excessive inflammation and enhance mood. You should try to get omega-3s by eating at least 3 servings per week of oily fish, such as wild Alaskan salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, or sablefish. I also recommend taking supplemental fish oil, at least two grams a day.

Fish oil does not help with heartburn or GERD. In fact, because both can be side effects of taking fish oil supplements, it is important to take them with food. Other possible side effects include belching, bad breath, nausea, loose stools, rashes and nosebleeds. These unwanted consequences appear to be rare. A review of 148 studies, including data on some 10,000 participants who were taking omega-3 supplements, found that more than half of the studies reported no adverse effects. The others found that those side effects that did occur were minor, usually digestive in nature and occurred among fewer than seven percent of the participants. In most cases, reducing the dose or discontinuing the supplements solved the problems.

Establishment Of Rat Models

Male Sprague Dawley rats , weighing 240±10 g, were procured from the Laboratory Animal Center of Fujian Medical University. The experimental procedures, and the animal use and care protocols were approved by the Committee on Ethical Use of Animals of The First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. Briefly, under chloral hydrate by intraperitoneal injectionanesthesia using chloral hydrate by intraperitoneal injection in about 40 rats that underwent overnight fasting, the RE model was established by a modified protocol based on PC-CARE model . In brief, the edge of the forestomach and glandular stomach of rat was ligated by 3-0 non-absorbable suture and the pyloric ring were occluded by pyloric clip to achieve incomplete obstruction of the pylorus . In the sham operation group, the stomach and duodenum were dissociated for 2 min without ligating the pylorus and duodenum.

Functional Medicine View Of Reflux

Theres an alternate theory in functional medicine, that it is low stomach acid and NOT high stomach acid that causes GERD and reflux.

The idea is that the LES gets loose when stomach acid secretion are lower than normal. And that a sufficient level of acid is what signals the LES to stay tightly shut.

One of the most common causes of low stomach acid is a bacterial infection of the stomach called h pylori.

Regular testing at your doctors office is not sensitive enough to catch this inflammatory and acid lowering infection. I use a highly sensitive functional lab test with clients that identify h pylori along with any other gut infections that it can lead to. The test I use is called the GI Map.

Stomach acid kills and protects you from pathogens like parasites as well as bacterial and fungal overgrowth. When acid is low it leaves the gut vulnerable to infections.

Dealing With Cat Constipation

Can Omega 3 Fish Oil Cause Acid Reflux? | Ask Eric Bakker

Monte was what we call a frequent flier, and here he was again, unhappily perched on my exam room table. Mrs. Berstrande brought him in because she recognized the early warning signs that Monte was having some trouble in the cat litter box department. Mr. Monte has suffered difficulties with constipation for years, and has gotten gradually more severely affected and more sensitive about his cat food and cat medication with even a small variation triggering a bout of constipation. Fortunately, however, his family was very attentive and caught the problems quickly to have him treated. This combination meant that Monte and I knew each other quite well.

Memory And Other Mental Health Benefits

In addition to postpartum depression,

A 2013 study found that people who took fish oil supplements for longer than 1 month had better cardiovascular function during mentally stressful tests.

In 2012, researchers noted that fish oil, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, appeared to help stabilize atherosclerotic lesions.

The AHA recommend eating fish, and especially oily fish, at least twice per week. They say that this may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, in 2012, of 20 studies involving almost 70,000 people found no compelling evidence linking fish oil supplements to a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, or early death.

Factors That Influence Fish Oils Side Effects

Before blaming the fish oil for the side effects that you experience, it is important to consider several influential factors. Factors that can influence side effects include: the fish oil quality, ingredients, dosage, how long youve taken it, whether youre taking other drugs , and your individual physiology.

When It Doesnt Work

If the treatment for constipation does not work on your bloated fish, you are probably looking at one of two things:

  • An internal injury or
  • A bacterial infection
  • Unfortunately, successful treatment of either condition is rare. I have never had luck with antibiotics but you may want to try them. If so, be sure to treat in a quarantine tank and follow the directions on the package to the letter. Also be aware that many antibiotics will inadvertently kill beneficial bacteria in the aquarium, resulting in a new aquarium cycle.

If the fish does not seem to respond, you may consider humane euthanization. Hopefully it will not come to that and the odds are for you the majority of bloat cases are, in fact, digestion related.

    Take With A Full Stomach

When it comes to taking fish oil supplements it is ideal to take it during or after a meal. Taking fish oil on an empty stomach might cause you to regurgitate it back up through your esophagus due to the fish oil reacting negatively with the bile in your stomach. By taking it during or after a meal you will allow the fish oil to mix in with the food thus helping to prevent acid reflux.

    What Is Fish Oil

Fish oil comes from the fatty tissue of fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring and lake trout. The primary fats found in fish are omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fat.

The two main types of omega-3s found in fish are eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid .

Most fish oil supplements consist of marine-derived EPA and DHA. “The difference between products will be the EPA to DHA ratio, which can range from 0.3 to 3,” explains Tyler Preston, RD, registered dietitian, performance coach and founder of the practice Preston Performance.

“If you want to simply resolve a deficiency, a more balanced EPA to DHA ratio of 1:1 would be appropriate,” Preston says.

There are different types of omega-3 supplements, including fish oil, cod liver oil and krill oil. Cod liver oil provides vitamins A and D in addition to EPA and DHA, per the National Institutes of Health .

Both EPA and DHA are essential for our health. “While DHA might have a stronger anti-inflammatory effect, EPA targets the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory proteins, illustrating their symbiotic relationship,” Preston says.

Acid blocking or lowering medications, like antacids or proton pump inhibitors , will make the problem worse if the issue is actually low stomach acid.

If the low acid is driven by h pylori, then eradicating the infection will help it bounce back. I use this powerful tea with my clients to eradicate h pylori.

Other reason for low stomach acid is stress or deficiencies of nutrients such as zinc.

With low stomach acid its best to eat multiple smaller meal and food that is well cooked as well as blended or pureed meals. These foods have already started breaking down before they are eaten and are much easier for a weak digestive system to handle.

How To Tolerate Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to your cardiovascular health. According to Medline Plus, fish oil is effective for reducing high triglycerides in the blood, which may lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. However, fish oil commonly causes uncomfortable side effects. They include abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, belching and diarrhea. If you experience any of those, dont give up on fish oil. Just change the way you consume the supplement.

    1

Take the recommended dose. Follow the Directions of Use on the fish oil supplement label. For example, if a nutritional label says to take 1 to 2 tablets with a glass of water, the serving size is 2 tablets. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, adults should not take more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from capsules per day without consulting a doctor first. Check the amount of omega-3 fatty acids per serving on the nutritional label.

    2

Freeze the fish oil capsules. Put your bottle of fish oil in a sealable bag and then place it in the freezer. Freezing the fish oil capsules slows down the release in your stomach, which may reduce the unpleasant side effects.

    3

Have your fish oil supplement during or after your meal. The food in your stomach may help slow down the absorption of fish oil, thus reducing the side effects. According to MayoClinic.com, gastrointestinal side effects may be reduced if fish oil is taken during a meal.
