How Long Does It Take For Probiotics to Work? – How Probiotics Work

Prebiotic foods, like garlic, onion, and artichoke help feed probiotics, allowing them to grow and thrive. On the other hand, sugars and processed foods feed yeast, which can overtake good bacteria and cause infection. Make sure your diet includes plenty of fiber-rich vegetables and fermented foods, which are naturally rich in probiotics.

When Should I Take A Probiotic

Because supplements like probiotics aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, each probiotic supplement may come with different directions on dosing and timing. The most important advice is to choose a time you’ll actually stick to, especially if you have trouble remembering to take pills in the first place. “Consistency is the key with taking probiotics if one wants to reap the potential benefits,” Dr. Asike says.

While the time of day is ultimately up to you, this expert suggests that probiotics may be most effective if you plan to take them about 30 minutes before a mealand most effective if you take your supplement before breakfast. Probiotics will have a greater effect in your small intestine if you take them before you eat: “During a fast or prior to eating, the stomach won’t be as acidic and this will allow the probiotic capsule or tablet to be able to make its way into the intestine,” he explains.

Adding a probiotic into your routine first thing in the A.M., then, will likely keep your stomach from sabotaging your efforts. “Breakfast is usually eaten around the same time daily, and tends to be smaller and more easily digested,” Dr. Asike says.

How Do Probiotics Work For Constipation

The bodys ability to properly digest the foods we eat is dependent on the good bacteria in the gut. Stress, medication, antibiotics, poor diet and other factors are known to damage the gut flora. Probiotics supplements work by populating the intestinal tract with good bacteria which can help to promote a healthy gut flora balance.

How Long Do Probiotics Take To Start Working

How long it takes for a probiotic to start working depends on several different factors: the current state of your gut microbiome, your age, weight, diet, and your overall lifestyle.

Basically, a probiotic is never really going to work for you if you continue doing all of the things that are causing your digestive issues in the first place.

Drinking lots of alcohol, consuming lots of red meat, and not eating any prebiotic fiber will ruin a gut microbiome regardless of how many probiotic bacteria strains you consume each day.

On the other hand, if you eat plenty of prebiotic fiber , drinking plenty of water, and lmiting alcohol intake, you will start to see benefits much sooner.

While the exact amount of time it takes for probiotics to work varies person to person, I can give you a general rule of thumb for judging whether or not probiotics are working for you at all. To do this, we need to turn to the available clinical trials.

In one study, it took 21 days before peoples bloating got considerably better. In another, it took eight weeks for probiotics to start working. In most cases, probiotics will take at least 3 weeks to really start working.

If your goal is optimizing gut health over the long term, then a prebiotic supplement might be a better option. The best prebiotics support the growth of your own healthy gut bacteria without introducing foreign bacteria to the body.

Can Probiotics Help With Chronic Constipation

How Does It Take for Probiotics to Work

Occasional irregularity is one thing, but chronic constipation can significantly impact quality of life. In fact, its the most common digestive complaint in the U.S. and accounts for 92,000 hospitalizations annually.

Factors that often lead to chronic constipation include:

  • Presence of underlying health problems
  • Some medications like opioids or certain cancer treatments

The causes of whats known as functional gastrointestinal and bowel disorders are complicated, multifactorial, and not yet completely understood. Even still, researchers believe probiotics can play a role in improving the quality of life for those who experience issues.

Lots of research focuses on the role probiotics can play to ease constipation. The problem is that since probiotic supplements are designed differently, the results on a larger scale are hard to interpret.

Nevertheless, a recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found 14 of best-designed studies on probiotics and chronic constipation, and concluded that they do in fact produce quantifiable results.

Specifically, the analysis determined probiotic supplements increased gut transit timethe time it takes for food to move through the digestive systemby about 12 hours, and study participants had 1.3 times more bowel movements per week on average. Bloating was reduced, and stool consistency improved.

Youdont want to give up on your probiotic supplements before theyve had a chance toimprove your well-being.You also dont want to waste money taking probiotic products that dont have any health benefitsfor you.

Based on my observation in the clinic, some patients notice the benefits of probiotics as soon as 1-3 days. For others, it takes as long as 2-3 weeks to see the effects of probiotic supplementation. A look through the research generally supports my observations about how quickly probiotics work, with one interesting exception. Heres a summary of the research results:

When Do Probiotics Start Working

So we know lowering inflammation is key to improving digestive problems, but what does this have to do with when your probiotics will start to work?

Lets do a quick recap: what does the probiotic need to accomplish to start to alleviate your digestive symptoms? It must

  • Begin to rebalance the gut microbiome
  • Exert antimicrobial action against harmful bacteria and pathogens, reducing their numbers
  • Lower inflammation by reducing the amount of lipopolysaccharides in the gut and throughout the body.
  • Adding enoughgood bacteria to your microbiome to overpower bad bacteria takes time.

Consistent antimicrobial action to push harmful bacteria out also must occur consistently, over time, to be successful.

And lowering inflammation isnt an immediate process either — the amount of lipopolysaccharides in the gut will need time to taper off as well, and it will take even more time for the actual inflammation to diminish.

The reduction of inflammation in the gut is key to noticing a significant improvement in symptoms.

While your probiotics are working towards these three goals, you may experience some temporary, mild side effects. Click here to read more about how to avoid that.

Our customers tend to notice significant changes in their symptoms after taking our probiotics for 2 to 3 weeks, but it can sometimes take longer. Remember, everyone is different!

How long it takes for your symptoms to improve depends on how inflamed and unbalanced your microbiome was to begin with.

Reasons Your Probiotics Arent Working And What To Do About It

After hopping on the probiotic train, youve made popping a capsule of good-for-you bacteria as much of your routine as your morning coffee run. But truthfullyyou dont feel much different than before you started the ritual. Sound about right?

Jamie Morea, founder of Hyperbiotics, says theres a chance your probiotic isnt actually affecting you, but that doesnt mean you should give up on the gut-boosting supplement.

Everythingfrom our processed-food diets, stress, and antibacterial products to antibiotics both as medicine and in our food supplycan leave us extremely depleted in probiotics, which are one of the most crucial aspects of health, Morea says.

But how can you tell whether the supplement youre taking is actually getting to work within your system? The first step is listening to your body, says Morea. After recovering from an intestinal parasite she contracted while traveling, none of the probiotics Morea tried seemed to make a difference in her gut healthso she started doing her own research.

What she found was multiple downfalls in existing probiotic productsand inspiration to create her own.

As I fought back and slowly recovered, I gained knowledge, compassion, empathy, and understanding, Morea says. Most of all, though, I gained a sense of purpose to help other people maintain the health I had so very nearly lost.

    Do Pro/prebiotics Actually Work

What Happens To Your Body When You Start Taking Probiotics? – How Probiotics Work

The fact that worldwide the probiotic/prebiotic market is predicted to be anywhere from $28 billion to $42 billion in the next year tells you everything you need to know about how many people swear by their benefits. But really high-quality evidence is remarkably scarce, not least because the people in the studies are difficult to compare.

Sure, millions of people are convinced probiotics and prebiotics work. But people say the same about medicines, yet wouldnt dream of taking them unless theyd gone through proper scientific studies to prove it. The placebo effect applies to pro/prebiotics as well as medicines if people think theyll work, theyre more likely to report that they feel better.

Because probiotics and prebiotics arent subject to the control of drug agencies, they dont need to go through the same rigorous tests as prescribed medicines. But some companies have done the studies anyway.

    Can Probiotics Make Constipation Worse

They May Cause Unpleasant Digestive Symptoms While most people do not experience side effects, the most commonly reported reaction to bacteria-based probiotic supplements is a temporary increase in gas and bloating . Those taking yeast-based probiotics may experience constipation and increased thirst .

    Can You Overdose On Probiotics

Probiotic-rich foods and supplements are generally considered safe. Your body is already filled with trillions of diverse bacteria, so overdosing is rare assuming that your immune system is healthy and functioning as normal.8

That said, you can always have too much of a good thing. Taking too many probiotics can create an unstable intestinal environment, which may result in many of the gastrointestinal side effects mentioned above, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, and nausea.12

If you accidentally overdose on probiotics you should not be concerned as your gut microbiome will quickly reach a new equilibrium after you stop taking probiotics. An effective probiotic dose is 10 billion CFUs. Stick to a daily dose around 10 billion CFUs and only increase if needed such as when youre taking a course of antibiotics or have an underlying digestive issue.

How Long Does It Take for Probiotics to Work? The shocking ...

    B. lactis DN-173 010 is another Bifidobacterium lactis strain shown to be effective at helping to relieve constipation in several clinical studies. In a double-blind parallel study in 70 healthy adults, drinking a daily combination of 375g of milk fermented with the specific Bifidobacterium lactis strain DN-173 010 for 11 days reduced colon transit time by 20%. Interestingly, the effect was more pronounced in women 15. In another similar study, this time a gold standard trial, 12.5 billion CFU of B. lactis DN-173 010 was administered in yoghurt form to 34 individuals with IBS-constipation daily for 4 weeks. B. lactis DN-173 010 was demonstrated to significantly reduce colonic transit time from baseline which was statistically significant comparted with placebo 16.

Should I Take Probiotics With Other Medication

Generally, its safe to take your probiotic with other supplements in the morning or at another hour of your choosing. Antibiotics, however, should be taken alone, and a doctor may instruct you to discontinue other supplements due to temporary illness. Dr. Asike maintains that probiotics are generally safe for most individuals, and the likeliest side effect may be some temporary bloating or extra gas, which usually sorts itself out over time.

Why I Wanted To Try A Probiotic

I personally don’t think I have IBS , but since hitting my late 20s I found myself increasingly irregular, which, when I asked around, was more prevalent among my female friends in particular than I’d realised it’s just something we never really spoke about. It still feels slightly embarrassing to talk about going to the loo. But feeling constantly bloated and bunged up can really affect your mood and energy levels.

Both constipation and diarrhoea can be features of IBS, though simply having one of these symptoms doesn’t automatically mean you have the condition. An IBS diagnosis is complex and has a strict criteria, explains Dr Chatterjee.

“I’m not a huge fan of the term ‘IBS’ as it doesnt really tell me very much, its the name we give to a collection of symptoms which is what I want to treat.”

Constipation can be caused by things like a lack of fibre in your diet, not enough water or exercise, a gluten or dairy intolerance and in some cases an imbalance of your gut microbiome, Chatterjee says.

As a huge fan of bread and cheese, I wasn’t overly keen on the idea of an elimination diet, and I already work out regularly and drink plenty of water, so I decided to try a probiotic instead.

    Best Probiotics For Constipation

When choosing a probiotic for constipation its important that it contains clinically researched strains that help alleviate the condition.

When I say help, I mean they should at least…

    • Increase the frequency of bowel movements
    • Shorten the transit times

Without doubt the two most effective probiotic species are Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.

However, its the strain that makes the difference and not all strains are created equal.

Certain strains are better at dealing with the symptoms of chronic constipation than others..

And the best probiotic supplements for constipation should contain at least one of these strains.

Below is a list of clinically researched bacterial strains that are shown to have a beneficial effect on constipation.

How To Monitor Theeffectiveness Of Your Probiotic Supplements

How Long Is It Before Probiotics Work to Calm My Baby?

When improvements to your well-being are gradual theyare sometimes easy to overlook. Keeping a written record of symptoms can bevery helpful.

Heres an approach that will help you to be as objective aspossible in monitoring the effects of probiotics during your trial:

1st Take stock of your symptoms

They might be fatigue and depression, or bloating, or joint pain, or constipation, or insomnia, or an unstable dose of thyroid medication. Whatever they are, take stock of how often and how severe your symptoms are.

2nd Reevaluate symptoms after 3-4 week on the probioticprotocol

Are you improving? If so, keep on the probiotic protocol. You are not looking for a complete resolution. If so, that is great. But dont expect everything to be fixed completely at the 3-4 week mark. You are looking for a clear trend of improvement. If so, great, we are on the right track. Keep going.

3rd Look for when you hit your peakimprovement

Once you peak or plateau, great. This is another milestone. Keep this constant for another four weeks, soyour body can integrate and you can lock in this new level of good health.

    After four weeks

Finally Try to gradually find the minimaleffective dose

Technically, you dont have to do this but I find less ismore with supplements. I like people tocut their dose of probiotic supplements in half, then reevaluate after 3-4weeks. If this goes well try coming offyour probioticscompletely.

Lifestyle Change #: Eat A Nutrient

If you want to support a diverse microbiome, this is probably the most important thing you can do.

Eating a wide variety of fiber-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds is your best bet. Add in some lean proteins and healthy fats and youve ticked the nutrient-dense box, too.

This whole fiber thing is really important.

One probiotic study done on healthy bodybuilders looked at the groups gut profiles.34

Though it wasnt the main aim of the study, the researchers noticed that bodybuilders who didnt get enough fiber had microbiomes similar to people who were sedentary.

In other words, they werent getting the microbiome benefits of exercise , possibly because they werent eating enough fiber.

    Interesting, right?

    What are prebiotics?

You may have heard that you should be eating prebiotics, a form of fiber that feeds the microbes in your gut. If you regularly eat fiber-rich foods like the ones mentioned above, youre getting enough prebiotics in your diet. We dont know which microbes prefer which types of fiber yet, so eating a wide array of different fiber sources is the best approach.

    What about probiotic foods?

Probiotic foods may also be worth including in your diet. Theyre associated with a host of beneficial health outcomes, such as a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease.13

And just a reminder: The only food thats classified as probiotic right now is fermented dairy. This includes fermented yogurts and kefir.

What To Do If Probioticsarent Working

If you have been taking a high-quality probiotic supplement and following the Probiotic Triple Therapy protocol for 3-4 weeks, and you dont experience any change in symptoms, you can be confident that you dont need to try another probiotic product.

With probiotics, you have laid an important foundation that can make other, subsequent, gut therapies more effective. For example, some people have stubborn imbalances in their intestinal bacteria that may require more than probiotics. Antibacterial treatments like herbs or even select antibiotics can help here. Studies have found that probiotics make antibacterial treatments more effective. So we start with probiotics and then consider additional support if needed.
