Some of us might be inadvertently missing out on a favourite food when theres no need. This brings us to the question is do you really need to give up avocado during the low FODMAP diet? Lets take a look at the ins and outs of avocado and the low FODMAP diet.

Can You Eat Avocados If Youre Sensitive To Fodmaps

As mentioned above, avocados are high or low in FODMAPs depending on the serving size.

If you think you may be experiencing digestive symptoms related to FODMAPs, consult an experienced healthcare professional who can help determine whether its FODMAPs, another food compound, or some other factor thats causing your symptoms.

A healthcare professional may suggest that you follow a low FODMAP diet succeeded by a reintroduction period to determine which, if any, foods are causing your symptoms.

According to the FODMAP diet, small amounts of avocado are okay, but any large serving sizes can be tricky. The more avocado you have, the more sorbitol youll ingest, which can contribute to IBS symptoms.

During this phase of the diet, you will need to avoid all foods made from rye, wheat, barley, spelt and other grains such as amaranth, kamut and bourghal.

Generally, grain and carbohydrate foods made that are gluten free or are made from oats are low fodmap. This can include glutenfree bread and breakfast cereals. Rice, potatoes, quinoa, polenta and corn products also tend to be low FODMAP. Surprisingly, sourdough spelt bread is also low FODMAP as long as you take no more than 2 slices at a time. Sourdough bread has already been fermented to some extent, meaning there is less fermenting left to do once it reaches your gut!

There are some foods and beverages that are classed as trigger foods because they are more likely to bring on BS symptoms. These foods and beverages will affect some IBS sufferers and not others, but if they do make your symptoms worse then it is best to limit or avoid them.

Insoluble fibre

Insoluble fibre is likely to cause problems for many people with IBS and it may need to be limited. That said, if you have IBS with constipation eating larger amounts of high-fibre food may help reduce your symptoms of constipation. Examples of foods containing insoluble fibre include:

  • Whole-grain cereals

Low or mild spice in a meal can be tolerated by some people.

Processed meats

Sausages, deli meat and anything that may have additives like dehydrated onion and vegetable powders may cause cramping or bloating.

Gluten

Some people may find eating a low gluten or gluten-free diet helps their IBS symptoms. Avoid products containing wheat, barley, rye and in some cases oats to go gluten-free. This includes food such as bread, pasta and cereals.

May Cause Liver Damage

Just like Avocado fruit, avocado oil is also very beneficial for our health and for this reason people have started adding it to their recipe. There is nothing bad in this but while doing so it should be remembered that the avocado oil you are using doesnt contain estragole and anethole in them. These are the elements that are found in some avocado oil and have been tested for carcinogenic reactions.

Consuming avocado oil rich in estragole and anethole may cause liver damage. So, if you want to keep your liver healthy then it is better to avoid avocado oil containing estragole and anethole. In general, avocados are beneficial for our heart and the presence of Glutathione in it helps in filtering out unwanted substances from our liver and keep it healthy .

However, it is advisable to consume avocados in moderation to maintain a healthy liver and if you are already suffering from a liver problem, then it is better to consult with your doctor about the same and eat avocado only as per his recommendation.

How Long Do I Need To Avoid These High Fodmap Foods For

You do this for a set period of time, and you keep a close eye on your bowel habits and IBS-type symptoms. Usually this phase is trialled for 4-8 weeks. And it is important to know that people who have the type of IBS that causes more diarrhoea may see results faster than those who suffer more with constipation.

Either way, if your symptoms improve significantly during the trial period, then great, you are luckily someone who responds to the diet. At this stage, when your symptoms have improved enough, you can then enter the reintroduction phase of the diet where you bring each FODMAP group back into your diet carefully and try to figure out which exact group of carbs you respond to. However, if your symptoms do not improve enough during the elimination phase, you are possibly someone whos IBS symptoms are not related to high FODMAP foods. At this stage you can either go back to eating as you did before, or you can try and stick to the diet for a few weeks longer. However, it is not recommended that you stay in the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet for prolonged periods of time. This phase of the diet is very restrictive and can put you at risk of nutritional deficiencies. So everyone on the low FODMAP diet must eventually move on to reintroduction and maintenance phases, or back to their usual eating habits.

If youve ever heard the term FODMAP applied to a diet, you may have assumed it offers some sort of map for the foods you eat. And in a way, youd be right. Well in this video I will go through some of the more common high FODMAP foods to avoid. However, some foods will be allowed but in very small amounts. Its really down to avoiding portions of FODMAP containing foods that are likely to cause symptoms.

There are some apps that are very useful in helping you find out what portions of foods are considered low or high in FODMAPS. For example, the Monash low FODMAP app is regularly updated with their latest FODMAP test results. Further below I have also included some useful tables of foods to avoid and portions of foods that you can take while on the low FODMAP elimination diet. You can print these off and have them with you when going grocery shopping for example.

These foods, Kahn tells Bustle, “can provoke symptoms like gas, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea because they are high in FODMAPs.” Never heard of FODMAPs? “FODMAP is an acronym for a group of short-chain carbohydrates that stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-Saccharides & Polyols. These carbohydrates are known to rapidly ferment in the gut and/or donât absorb properly in the small intestine,” Kahn explains.

Foods in this group have various characteristics that mean they can’t be effectively digested by people with IBS.Dr. Zembroski tells Bustle that they all have different issues: legumes â like chickpeas, black beans, lentils and peanuts â contain plant sugars called galacto-oligosaccharides and a protein called lectin, while garlic and onion contain the carbohydrate fructan. We recommend that you follow this diet under the supervision of a registered dietitian, as it can be very tricky to get all the nutrients you need while you are working your way through the elimination phase.

“People with IBS should eat fruits and vegetables that are considered low ‘FODMAP,'” says Elena Ivanina, DO, a gastroenterologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

FODMAPs are a very specific group of high-carbohydrate foods, according to Harvard Health Publishing. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are specific food components that could be irritating when digested. Here are some examples:

  • Oligosaccharidesare in garlic, onions, wheat and beans.
  • Disaccharidesare in dairy products, like milk, soft cheeses, yogurt, custard and ice cream.
  • Monosaccharidesare carbohydrates such as fructose, a naturally occurring sugar found in manyfoods such as apples, mangos and honey.
  • Polyolsare naturally in mushrooms, avocados and many foods with artificial sweetenersor sugar alcohols, such as chewing gum.

Dr. Ivanina says any foods with high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners are among the worst foods for IBS.

Other fruits high in FODMAPs that might lead to IBS symptoms, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders , include:

  • Juicecontaining any of these fruits.
  • Driedfruit.

You might also wonder what snacks are good for IBS. Dr. Ivanina suggests treats like:

  • Bananaswith a little peanut butter.
  • Ricecrackers.
  • Ahandful of berries or mixed nuts.
  • Smoothiesmade with low FODMAP ingredients.

What To Avoid For Ibs

  • Tea, coffee: When you have IBS, you must stay away from tea, coffee. Tea, coffee are diuretic and dehydrates your body. These are must items in the list of foods to avoid with IBS bloating.
  • Sweetener: Avoid artificial sweeteners when you have IBS. Artificial sweeteners have chemicals which are not good for your stomach.
  • Lactose and fructose products: Lactose and fructose cause stomach troubles to many people in normal conditions. When the patient has IBS, the situation worsens. Avoid high dairy meals and products rich with a high amount of lactose and fructose.
  • Too many spices and spicy foods: Spicy foods trigger your IBS condition. Avoid spicy foods during IBS situation.
  • Too much fibre: Avoid too much fibre, especially the insoluble kind you get in the skin of fruits and vegetables.
  • Food and drinks with chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, fructose, or sorbitol. Avoid fruits and drinks that contain these items.
  • Carbonated drinks: Avoid carbonated drinks like Pepsi, Fanta etc and instead drink naturally fruit flavoured water and fruits and vegetable juices.
  • Large meals: Avoid starving for a long time and voraciously eating large meals. Instead, choose small meals throughout the day that contain healthy, natural and organic items and curb processed sugary and fatty foods.
  • Fried and fatty foods: When you have IBS, avoid fatty and fried foods, fast foods. These food items trigger your IBS condition.
