Butter And Dairy Products
As I stated above, many dairy products contain lactose including milk. Butter is made from milk, so why is it low in lactose?
During the process of making butter, cream is separated from fresh milk and beaten until thickened.4 Extra liquid is drained off and the remaining product is mostly fat .4 If you look on the nutrition facts table you can see that there is just fat and perhaps some salt, but no carbohydrates/sugar or protein. Since we know that lactose is a sugar, we can see from the nutrition facts table that there is no lactose left.
Similarly, if you see milk fat in an ingredients list, you can know that it wont add lactose to the product since it is just fat.
Cheese is also low in lactose, but some varieties contain more lactose than others. For example, 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella is low in lactose.5 Ricotta has more lactose but is still low at 2 tablespoons.5 It is called the Low FODMAP Diet and not the no FODMAP diet for a reason. Most individuals are okay with small amounts of lactose.1 Check out the Monash University Low FODMAP Diet App to find more serving sizes or my FODMAP chart.
If You Eat Peanut Butter Every Day Your Risk For Diabetes May Decrease
Diabetes is a condition in which your body is not able to properly process glucose, as noted by Medical News Today. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to a host of other medical problems such as stroke and heart disease. If youre invested in doing everything you can to prevent yourself from getting the disease, consider eating peanut butter every day.
Research shows if you eat peanut butter daily, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes will go down, particularly if the peanut butter replaces refined carbohydrates or processed foods in your diet, registered dietitian Natalie B. Allen revealed to The List. Peanut butter, and nuts in general, improve glucose and insulin balance in the body.
Of course, any benefits of peanut butter will be mitigated if youre eating it in the form of peanut butter cookies or peanut butter-filled chocolates because of the sugar content. As such, make sure to stick to healthy snacks like peanut butter spread atop celery or whole grain toast.
Content Of Peanut Butter
Peanut butter contains a large amount of healthy components including fiber to promote proper digestion and even prevent digestive issues as long as consumed in moderation. It is important to note that peanut butter might have health benefits to minimize the risk of heart disease due to the presence of unsaturated fats that help improve the levels of cholesterol.

Peanut Butter And Gluten
This was one of my favorite after school snacks! The low FODMAP diet would stop you from enjoying this oldy but a goody. Peanut butter and gluten free pretzels are quick and easy, and are also high in protein and fiber.
To save some time, you can always buy pre packaged peanut butter for a shelf stable, on the go snack.

Is peanut butter acidic or alkaline?
A high acidic intake has been attributed to certain types of cancer and other bodily ailments. Almonds are the only nut that are considered VERY alkaline. Peanuts on the other hand are highly acidic.

Half An Unripe Banana + 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter
A banana with peanut butter was my go-to snack when I was a kid to the point, and I would sometimes have it twice a day. Finding out that I could eat this even on low FODMAP was the best feeling. As long as you only eat half a banana and up to 2 tablespoons of nut butter, you are good to go. Don’t like peanut butter? Try this with almond butter or chocolate hazelnut butter, but be sure to check the label.
Consider Eating Smaller Meals And Matching Food Groups Better
When trying to repair your leaky gut, attention to detail matters. Thats why even the more trivial ideas are worth trying out.
So with this idea Im basically suggesting
- Eat 4-5 small meals a day, as opposed to 3 big ones. A day of eating would then look something like: green hulk shake , snack , small lunch , afternoon snack and dinner .
- Combine food groups smartly. This is pretty easy when youre eating a leaky gut diet. i.e. the foods that are hard to combine are pretty much out. But just in case you are eating fruits , make sure they are eaten as much as possible by themselves or at least away from heavy protein meals.
Now with all of that said, it is worth noting that I am not completely sold on eating smaller meals and more often.
Thats because I do like the thinking behind 2-3 meals a day only, since this gives the digestive system plenty of time for breaks.
So like with all ideas on this list, it really comes down to personal experimentation and seeing what works best for your digestive system.

A Low Fodmap Serving Of Fruit
Fruit is always a good idea for a snack, just as long as you stay within the recommended portion sizes. This can sometimes make for a very small serving, but at least it is something fresh and healthy. There is nothing quite like a fresh fruit, especially now that we are heading in to spring and summer. My favorite fruits to grab are clementines, a kiwi, or strawberries.
Peanut Crops Are Heavily Contaminated With Pesticides
Other than aflatoxin, there are even more nutty problems to worry about. Non-organic peanuts and peanut butters are also contaminated with pesticides. This is a concern because peanuts have a very light shell, which can easily leach to outside materials. Conventional peanuts have a very high pesticide rate, as well as other chemical contaminants.

Are Your Nuts Fresh
That leads to the second reason to avoid all commercially made almond butter, almond meal, almond flour, and blanched almond flour. All nuts have a short shelf life. They are prone toward rancidity. This is especially true of walnuts. But all nuts must be stored briefly or properly. Do we think that big factories are mindful of this truth?
Rather they are looking at mass production, mass profit, and the effectiveness of a good label to make their product look healthy and desirable, not to mention a competitive selling price.
A competitive selling price, however, is not complimentary with having a knowledgeable health advocate on the company team to make sure that all almonds are made into butter quickly after harvest and then frozen to prevent further aging of the nuts components.
Nor are most nut companies these days soaking and sprouting their nuts before creating their meals and butters, although we are beginning to see a few companies do this who sell from health food store shelves.
Whats wrong with a good rancid nut? Until youve eaten lots of GOOD soaked, sprouted and dehydrated nuts you wont necessary taste the difference.
But rancidity in food is not something to ignore.
Paul Pitchford of Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition writes that possible complications from eating rancid nuts include,
So Back To Peanut Butter Why Is It A Problem
Lets say you eat two tablespoons of peanut butter for a snack. Thats a whopping 4.5g of omega-6. Its pretty hard to get that ideal omega 6:3 ratio of 1:1, or even 4:1, when youre packing down that much omega-6 from peanut butter.
Most of that omega-6 is LA , which the body can convert to AA , which is what triggers inflammation. .
Even worse, besides the systemic inflammation problem, omega-6 fats are highly unstable .
They react with heat and oxygen extremely easily in the body. They form zombie fats that then zombify other PUFAs, triggering a chain-reaction zombie outbreak of peroxidized fatty acids, which eventually break down into toxins like malondialdehyde that can damage the fundamental structures of basically any cell in your body.
Your immune system already has a really big job keeping you free of invaders and its not going to be able to do that as well if it also has to deal with a constant supply of damaging zombie fats.

Peanut Butter Is A Low Fodmap Food
If you have IBS and love peanut butter, good news! Peanut butter is a low FODMAP food. In its simplest form, it is just made of dry roasted peanuts, salt and oil, all of which are allowed on a low FODMAP diet. However, some brands add refined sugar and flavourings to enhance the peanut butters taste.
When youre out shopping for peanut butter, read the labels carefully to find out any FODMAPs in the product that can trigger IBS like high amounts of molasses, cows milk, milk chocolate, carob powder, honey, and high fructose corn syrup, agave syrup and sorghum syrup.

Natural Peanut Butter Isnt Better
The better peanut butter brands on the market include those with only peanuts and a little salt and are either natural or organicor so you think. Thats because even in its most natural form, peanut butter is still detrimental to your health. It is more susceptible to toxic mold growth because it is less processed, which is ironic.
Society thinks the more natural, the better. In most cases this is true however, all commercially produced peanut butter must go through aflatoxin testing before going to market. This is true, even if it is natural, organic, or straight from the ground.
Turkey And Cheese Pinwheel
This can make a really quick and easy snack or meal! Wrap turkey with a low FODMAP friendly cheese like cheddar or havarti in a corn tortilla or a gluten free wrap like Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas.
You can even add some lettuce and tomato for some extra crunch and veggies for your day. Be cautious of any onion or garlic seasoning on the deli turkey .

In Terms Of Taking Digestive Enzymes Heres What I Recommend
- Take 1-2 with each meal. I do this just before my meal.
- If you are still having digestion issues, consider upping the dose to 2-3. You most likely will be fine with 1-2.
- During the early stages of leaky gut recovery make sure you take them before any meal or snack, even a simple protein shake for example. The idea is to really give the digestive system a helping hand at every turn.
Most importantly, look for a digestive enzyme supplement that contains the best enzymes for supporting digestion of all food groups. Heres the list:
Since there are 100s of different digestive enzymes on the market I often get asked, which one is worth taking.
Well, as you might have read in my article on digestive enzymes it is really important to choose a digestive enzyme complex that ticks 3 boxes.
Peanut Butter And Diarrhea: Why Does Peanut Butter Give Me Diarrhea
According to Medline Plus, you have diarrhea if you pass loose and watery stools three or more times in a day.
If your diarrhea lasts for more than a few days, then you may have more serious health issues.
However, in most cases, diarrhea goes away eventually within four days without the medical practitioners finding out its causes.
The National Institue of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases named infections, travelers diarrhea, and medications side effects as the common cause of acute and persistent diarrhea.
So, if you happen to have diarrhea right after consuming peanut butter, chances are, you have a peanut allergy or peanut intolerance.
Peanut butter intolerance or sensitivity happens when your body has a difficult time digesting peanut butter, specifically peanuts.
In contrast, peanut allergy is a reaction that happens when your body mistakenly recognized peanuts as harmful invaders and thus, activating your bodys defense system to fight against them and result in allergy symptoms.
Peanut intolerance causes milder symptoms as opposed to peanut allergy that may lead to life-threatening responses, such as anaphylactic.
While peanut intolerance and allergy are fundamentally triggered by a different cause, both of these conditions may lead to symptoms like diarrhea.
In most cases, however, peanut butter is used as a treatment for diarrhea.

Heartburn Triggers: Heartburn And Medications
Many different medications can trigger heartburn, or make heartburn worse. An aspirin here or there is not likely to lead to that fiery feeling. But regular use of aspirin or a popular class of painkillers called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may irritate the esophagus. NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, and prescription Cox-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex. These drugs are often used to treat arthritis.
Several different types of blood pressure medicines can also cause heartburn. Many blood pressure and heart disease medicines, including calcium channel blockers and nitrates, relax the LES muscle, making it easy for your stomach acids to retreat backwards.
Several other types of medications are known to relax the LES muscle and lead to heartburn. They include:
- An asthma medicine called theophylline, taken by mouth

Prevention Of Heart Problems
Peanut butter is a rich source of unsaturated fat like poly and monounsaturated fats which are beneficial for healthy heart function. According to studies, polyunsaturated fats can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease .
Moreover, dietary unsaturated fats can reverse cholesterol transport and increases good cholesterol or HDL .
Also, peanut butter contains omega 6, arginine amino acid, and oleic acid. All of these nutrients have benefits over healthy heart function like lipid control and reduction of blood sugar.

Oxalates Cause Health Risks
Peanuts also contain another natural substance called oxalates. When we eat peanuts or peanut butter and the oxalates become too concentrated in the bodys fluids, they will crystallize and lead to health problems. It is recommended that people with gallbladder issues or with untreated or existing kidney problems avoid peanuts.
Are There Nut Butters Dogs Should Avoid
Next to peanut butter, there are a few other nut butters you should never give a dog. These are often going to be far too high in fat and cholesterol that can cause your pooch some serious health damage. This will be especially true for their digestive system.
If you suspect your dog ate any of the following butters , contact the vet right away:
- Macadamia Butter: Macadamia nuts are 100% poison to dogs. Their components and constituents can cause shivering, weak legs, bring on a fever, induce diarrhea or cause vomiting.
- Pecan Butter: The rich oil content of pecans can seriously damage your dogs liver. Avoid giving it to your dog at all costs.
- Pistachio Butter: Pistachios contain a mold called Aspergillus that will harm your dogs liver. Never let your dog eat it.
- Walnut Butter: Walnuts can be very toxic to dogs, causing stomach irritation and inflammation. Moldy walnuts can cause neurological problems like seizures. Theres no way to know, so avoid letting your dog eat it.

What If I Feel Sick After Eating Butter
Perhaps you came to this page because you are trying to figure out why you seem to feel unwell after eating butter. Here are three non-lactose/FODMAP factors to consider but please reach out to a dietitian to get some individualized advice.
The first thing to consider is that fatty foods can be an IBS symptom trigger for some individuals.6 Completing a food and symptom journal, as well as meeting with a dietitian, can help you to figure out if high-fat foods are a trigger for you.
If you find that you are reacting to all milk products regardless of lactose content you may have a milk allergy. A milk allergy occurs when your immune system reacts to the proteins that are found in milk.6 An allergy is very different from an intolerance. Both allergies and intolerances can cause digestive symptoms, but facial swelling, coughing, runny nose and skin irritations are only symptoms of an allergy.6 If you suspect you may have an allergy please talk to your family doctor to get assistance.
Finally, your symptoms may be from another food you ate at the same time as the butter. For example, bread becomes high in the FODMAP fructans in serving sizes larger than one small slice .5 The low FODMAP diet can help with systematically identifying which foods trigger IBS symptoms.
