Be Cautious With Dried Fruit

Dried fruits, similar to fruit juices, are extremely concentrated. Concentrated forms of fruit contain higher levels of fiber, fructose, and other bothersome ingredients than fresh fruit, even at smaller portion sizes. We recommend limiting dried fruit and getting most of your fruit intake from fresh fruit sources.

Various pharmacotherapy combinations are recommended, including, antispasmodic, laxative, prokinetic, antidiarrheal, anxiolytic/antidepressant, fiber, and antibiotic and probiotic agents.6 The current IBS consensus also acknowledges that food is commonly cited by subjects as a trigger to their symptomatology33,34 and that dietary restriction of certain trigger foods appears to improve symptoms. The current IBS consensus suggests the use of a patient food diary to identify trigger foods. However, no one specific diet has been recommended for subjects in Asia-Pacific for IBS. Veggie Sushi Rolls For One

Simple, vegetarian, low FODMAP sushi rolls for one. The kind of food that makes you smile and leaves you with a very happy belly.

Nourishing and filling, I find that sushi is great to make when youre after something wholesome and easy on the stomach, but that you know is going to fill you up and keep you energised for longer.

I think a lot of people thinking making your own sushi is time consuming I too had drifted back into this way of thinking until my sister came back from university for Easter and started whipping it up left, right and centre. It turns out that its not hard to make at all, its actually foolproof. All you need is some gorgeous sticky rice, a sheet or two of nori, some thinly sliced raw veggies and a little white wine vinegar, sugar and salt. If youve never made your own sushi before I promise its easier that it looks I lost my bamboo rolling mat at university and havent used one since. If you want you can use cling film to help you keep everything together when making the roll but if you havent got any of that lying around either dont panic, just keep your hands dampened with some water and give it a go solo. And anyway if it does all go downhill you can just say you were making one of those deconstructed sushi bowls and nobody will be any the wiser.

  • Once the rice is done, grab your cooled vinegar mixture and stir in with a rubber spatula or fork . It should be sticky but completely dry once its ready.

Dining out while following a low FODMAP diet can seem like a scary prospect. But, with a little preparation it doesnt need to be! Now that cafes and restaurants are reopening to the public, its the perfect time to master how to comfortably eat out on the low FODMAP diet.

Researching your dining options and taking your time when selecting a restaurant can help to reduce any anxiety you may have. This is particularly important, as stress can trigger symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in some people. Many eateries have a version of their menu available online, and are usually happy to answer any questions you might have before you place a booking.

When looking over a restaurant menu, there are a few things to keep an eye out for, for instance:

    • Is it clear whether dietary requirements are catered for?
    • Are gluten-free options available?
    • Are simple meals such as grilled salmon or chicken with seasonal vegetables and rice available?
    • Remember to identify any menu items potentially high in FODMAPs like traditionally-made pasta and pizza bases, creamy and broth-based dishes, marinated meat, chicken and fish, sauces, gravy, salad dressings and dips.

Dont be afraid to let the restaurant staff know that you cant eat certain foods. Generally, you can expect them to be accommodating. Some questions to ask include:

    How To Choose Healthy Sushi

  • Choose low mercury fish. Options include salmon, shrimp, eel, crab, and troutand avoid the high-mercury fish types we mentioned above.
  • Order one roll. If you like rolls, choose just one, then pair it with other options lower in carbs and calories like edamame, miso soup, or a side salad.
  • Skip the rice. Instead of a sushi roll wrapped in rice, request it be wrapped in cucumber, or skip the rice and order sashimi. If you keep the rice, request brown rice for more fiber and nutritional value.
  • Choosing The Restaurant Carefully

Select a restaurant that has a good range of gluten free options. While gluten isnt the problem on a low-FODMAP diet, choosing gluten free will eliminate wheat, which is a major source of oligosaccharides.

Thai restaurants often give you the option of selecting a low-FODMAP stir-fry or steamed veges, and ask for onion and garlic-free sauces.

Japanese and Chinese restaurants are good as they offer rice-based cuisine.

Steak houses offer meat, potato and salad dishes that are often easy to adapt.

    Potential Risks Of Sushi

Some of the biggest risks come from sushi made using raw fish rather than cooked fish. You can minimize your risks by choosing sushi made with cooked fish or vegetables only.

If you choose sushi with raw fish, here are some of the risks you may face.

    Bacteria or Parasites

Raw fish can be a source of bacteria or parasites, including tapeworm and salmonella.

Although raw fish is frozen before storage to help kill bacteria, thereâs no guarantee that the raw fish in your sushi is contaminant-free. In a study looking at 23 different Portuguese restaurants, 64% of the raw fish examined was contaminated with some sort of harmful microorganism.

More studies are needed to determine whether this holds true universally, but itâs always best to exercise caution when eating raw fish.

Some fish contain mercury, a heavy metal that is toxic in large doses and is especially dangerous to pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Some fish â including swordfish, shark, tilefish, and king mackerel â can contain higher concentrations of mercury than other fish. You can limit your mercury exposure by choosing sushi with fish known to be low in mercury.

Many types of sushi contain high levels of sodium. The popular sushi topping, soy sauce, is also high in sodium. Most Americans already have too much sodium in their diets, and high sodium levels can lead to problems that include congestive heart failure and kidney disease.
