Various pharmacotherapy combinations are recommended, including, antispasmodic, laxative, prokinetic, antidiarrheal, anxiolytic/antidepressant, fiber, and antibiotic and probiotic agents.6 The current IBS consensus also acknowledges that food is commonly cited by subjects as a trigger to their symptomatology33,34 and that dietary restriction of certain trigger foods appears to improve symptoms. The current IBS consensus suggests the use of a patient food diary to identify trigger foods. However, no one specific diet has been recommended for subjects in Asia-Pacific for IBS. Furthermore, there is no specific recommendation to involve dietitians in the management of IBS in this region. The main recommendations at present include avoidance of excessive dairy products, chilli, curries, dietary fiber and excess fructose/fructo-oligosaccharide intake if they appear to be the cause of symptoms, with an emphasis on maintaining a nutritionally balanced diet.

    Researching your dining options and taking your time when selecting a restaurant can help to reduce any anxiety you may have. This is particularly important, as stress can trigger symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in some people. Many eateries have a version of their menu available online, and are usually happy to answer any questions you might have before you place a booking.

    When looking over a restaurant menu, there are a few things to keep an eye out for, for instance:

    • Is it clear whether dietary requirements are catered for?
    • Are gluten-free options available?
    • Are simple meals such as grilled salmon or chicken with seasonal vegetables and rice available?
