For Students With Unique Interests

AP, IB & Honors Classes Can Help You Prepare for College

Some students have unique interests and academic passions that fall outside of basic course offerings. These students should feel free to pursue any avenues available to them!

A student interested in taking American Sign Language as their foreign language may have to look at Dual Enrollment options. A student who fell in love with AP Macroeconomics may want to continue that interest through Dual Enrollment. An IB student interested in literature may take an Honors course on African American literature to go deeper on a subject that interests them. And a student taking mostly Honors courses may choose to push themselves to AP in the subjects they are genuinely passionate about.

There is no right answer or perfect combination of advanced-level courses. Students do not have to take a certain number of APs to be eligible for admission .

The important thing is that if students can balance a rigorous curriculum while maintaining grades they are proud of and quality of life outside of school, then theyre setting themselves up for success in college and later life.

Who Is The College Board

While technically not a college, this non-profit educational organization collaborates with thousands of schools across America to provide standardized tests, college prep resources, and AP courses. For example, they administer the well-known SAT tests in public schools. Their Advanced Placement Program is a fee-based system that allows high school students to prepare for college, take AP classes and earn credits.

Which Programme Is Most Recognized Globally

While all the three curricula discussed above have global recognition, the A Levels are probably the most well-renowned with the widest reach. International GCSE and A Levels are studied in over 10,000 schools by over a million students in 160 countries. Over 1,400 universities worldwide recognise A Level qualifications. They are accepted by every UK university, by 600 universities in the US and in many other major student destinations, such as Canada, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Germany and the Netherlands. To compare, over 5,000 schools worldwide offer the IB curriculum. AP courses are offered by many US curriculum schools around the world.

Should You Change Schools For Ib

We’ve talked about deciding between AP and IB at the same school. But what if your local high school doesn’t offer IB and you’re considering switching to a school that does?

Remember to consider the time it will take to commute!

I had to make this decision myself. My district had three high schools, but only one offered the IB program. That high school was pretty far away from my neighborhood, but it drew tons of students specifically for the IB program, and a lot of my friends were going there because they wanted to get into good colleges. I strongly considered going to that high school just so I could do the IB program.

I eventually decided to go to my neighborhood high school that offered only APs. Going to the other high school would have involved at least an hour of commuting each day, and it would have strained my family’s schedule.

Since I saved time by not commuting, it was actually easier to get involved in after-school extracurriculars like debate and Model United Nations. I was also able to keep taking piano lessons and doing service workactivities I had done since I was littlebecause my schedule wasn’t squeezed by commuting.

Because I took the most challenging program available at my high school, I didn’t hurt my admission chances. In fact, I might have improved them by having more time for extracurriculars.

The A Levels Ib And Ap Are Graded Differently

During an examination series for the International GCSEs and A Levels, students sit a number of individual exams for a single subject. Each paper has a specific weighting defined in the syllabus of every course. The weighted average of these papers will be the studentâs final grade. Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs are awarded using the new nine point grading scale , introduced by the UK government to raise standards and recognise top-performing students. As part of this new system, each studentâs raw mark is scaled on a bell curve against the performance of all other students taking the exam. Simply put, this means that you donât have to get 90% of the questions correct to end up getting a 90% on your report card. Your scores are relevant to those of your peers.

In the IB, each academic subject is scored out of 7, with 7 being the highest possible score. The assessed components of the DP Core are scored on an A-E scale. CAS is a Pass/Fail requirement of the IB Diploma. Thus at the end of the IB Diploma Programme you will receive a score out of 45, with 42 of those attributed to academic subjects. Depending on the combination of your scores for ToK and EE, you will receive between 1-3 points, bringing the total possible score to 45.

AP exams are scored on a scale of 1-5. Many US and Canadian universities give college credit for scores of 3 and above in the AP exams.

Ib Is More Expensive Than Ap

Another difference is that IB exams are more expensive for US students than AP exams.

Whereas there is a $119 fee per IB exam, AP tests cost $94 per exam for students at schools in the US, US territories, or Canada, and $124 per exam for all other students.

However, many schools have financial aid and fee-waiver programs for AP exams, so your actual cost could be lower. Talk with your guidance counselor to find out more about testing costs.

College Credits And Ap Scholar Awards

Each college or university sets its own admissions requirements. Good scores in AP coursework indicate to admissions staff that a student has achieved a recognized standard in that subject area. Most schools will accept scores of 3 or above as the equivalent of their introductory or first-year courses in the same subject area. Consult university websites for details.

The College Board offers a series of 8 Scholar Awards which recognize outstanding scores in AP examinations.

Analysis Of Ap And Ib Curricula And Assessments

To evaluate the appropriateness of the AP calculus and IB mathematics programs for advanced high school students, the panel considered the degree to which the curricula and assessments of each emphasize four areas listed below. These areas represent the kind of mathematical learning the panel believes advanced mathematics students should experience in their high school calculus course:

    • Technical skill, including flexibility with symbolic manipulation, graphical representation, numerical approximation, and function notation

    • Conceptual understanding, including, for example, the derivative as a rate of change

    • Theory, including precise definitions, carefully reasoned mathematical arguments, and mathematical rigor

    • Applications and modeling, including situations in which students must set up the model

For Students Looking To Shave Time Off College

A student can earn college credit through AP/IB exams or through Dual Enrollment classes. While AP and IB can allow students to place out of certain introductory level classes, if finishing college in less than four years is a priority, Dual Enrollment is probably your best bet. Credit is awarded based on a students final grade rather than on an exam score. And through programs like Wake Techs Career & College Promise, students can earn quite a bit of college credit while they are in high school.

Be aware that not all credits will transfer to all colleges. Students should do their research to make sure that the credits for courses they want to take are accepted by the colleges they want to ultimately attend.

Ap Is Much More Popular Than Ib

The IB program is far less common than AP. More than 2.8 million students took AP exams in 2019, but only about 166,000 took IBs. Furthermore, AP reported in 2014 that over 30% of US public high students took at least one AP exam.

While AP is quite widespread, the IB program is rarer since schools have to be able to offer enough classes for the diploma in order to host an IB program. Adding IB is often more costly than starting a few AP classes.
