How about eliminating added sugars, processed foods, and alcohol? Try that for a few weeks, and you may be amazed at how much better your body feels.
A review of the literature in 2016, showed that an increased consumption of sugar negatively impacts the gut bacteria colony, leading to dysbioisis . When our gut bacteria becomes unbalanced, it affects the integrity of our gut barrier .

Dairy and grains contain common compounds known to irritate some peoples guts . Sometimes you only need to eliminate them for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference for your health.
And its not only about the sugar! This systematic review indicates that dietary fat can also impact the composition of our microbiota. In fact, some evidence implies that a diet high in saturated fat may promote inflammation, with a plant-based diet having an anti-inflammatory response.

A proposed gastrointestinal disorder dubbed leaky gut syndrome is currently the topic of numerous debates throughout the medical and natural health communities. An elemental diet provides nutrition components like protein, fat, and carbohydrates that are already broken down. The food is pre-digested, so your body doesnt have to do the work if it isnt able to. It is a way to give your digestive system a break.
It is most commonly used for people with chronic digestive problems under a healthcare providers supervision. It is usually purchased but can be homemade. It is a liquid or a powder that is mixed with water.

Leaky Gut: Foods To Avoid
Be prepared to personalize your list of foods to avoid. Different particles will enter the bloodstream with intestinal permeability, and so the immune system has unique codes that attack dangerous intruders. I was diagnosed with an allergy to corn, which comes with all kinds of hidden names and ingredient derivatives: Ascorbic acid, maltodextrin, mannitol, modified food starch, natural flavoring polenta, and much, much more. If you have food allergies, be sure to look into their hidden names as well, and keep a list if shopping for snacks, bars, or any sort of prepackaged foods.
What to Test Out:
The first step in healing leaky gut and determining your personal okay to eat and avoid list is to remove ingredients individually for two weeks, and add them back into the diet to see how your body responds. Start with the most common allergens by removing them individually, adding them back in, and then removing the next one.
Sugar is to be avoided in general, with the exception of natural sugars found in fruits and other wholesome products. If you find that you can tolerate dairy, or even gluten, eat them sparingly in your diet, and be aware of portion sizes.
Other Foods to Avoid Initially:
Caffeine adds stress to the body, while alcohol prevents proper nutrient absorption, and can feed candida. Chocolate and soda are two products often overlooked for caffeine, however they should initially be avoided as well.

The Problem With Leaky Guy Syndrome
The small intestine is where the gastrointestinal associated lymphoid tissue lives which makes up 7080% of our immune system. The gut lining is a key barrier, much like the skin, that protects our blood stream from the external environment. The responsibility of the GALT is to target and kill off unwanted opportunistic organisms that make their way into the small intestine.
When the GALT gets overwhelmed, it results in high levels of inflammation in the gut that damage the intestinal lining. This is one factor in the pathogenesis of leaky gut syndrome. When the gut barrier opens and undigested food particles and microbes are able to get into the blood stream, the body increases the inflammatory response to protect against a systemic infection.
This increased level of inflammation impacts other major organs and bodily regions. As a clinician, I always suspect leaky gut whenever I have patients with chronic immune related issues. This includes cancer and autoimmune conditions as well as other chronic inflammatory conditions.
Symptoms Of Leaky Gut
Leaky gut symptoms can manifest in different ways for different people.
In some folks it causes inflammatory joint and/or muscle pain, with symptoms like arthritis, back pain or head aches.
In others it can manifest as food sensitivities, environmental allergies or skin reactions like acne, Rosacea or rashes/hives.
It can make some people more vulnerable to developing auto immune conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Hashimotos, or rheumatoid arthritis.
And yet in others it can show up as digestive issue like bloating, gut pain and cramping.
The good news is that these symptoms can be reversed or greatly diminished when the gut lining is resealed.
Food sensitivities dont have to be a life sentence. When I had leaky gut during my bout with IBS 14 years ago, I developed a sensitivity to nuts. After sealing and healing my gut I can eat nuts again.

Changes In Gut Permeabilityy Are Now Validated By Research
The existence of a leaky gut used to be controversial. That all changed with the discovery of a molecule called zonulin.
In 2000, Dr. Alessio Fasano and his team discovered zonulin, a protein our body makes that opens and closes those doors in our gut called tight junctions . His research was initially done on celiac disease patients, but its significance reaches far beyond the world of celiac disease and gluten-related disorders. Zonulin has become a marker for intestinal permeability or leakiness.
As research has unfolded since 2001, we now know that a leaky gut correlates with inflammation and is seen in many other diseases such as IBS, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, and autoimmune diseases . The discovery of zonulin and the explosion of interest in gut health, leaky gut, and the microbiome are being investigated as significant, modifiable risk factors in our long-term health .
It must be noted that the topic of leaky gut is still not completely free of controversy. There is currently no universally accepted way to measure gut permeability. This means the diagnosis is made based on a persons symptoms. That is never ideal.
There are valid methods to study permeability, and commercial labs have created tests claiming to measure it. Still, in reality, the best way to measure gut permeability has not been determined.
All this being said, there is no debate that inflammation is bad, and decreasing inflammation will only be of benefit.

Foods To Eat When You Have A Leaky Gut
Now that you know what not to eat, you might be thinking, “What’s left?” “Focus on clean ingredients with easy-to-digest foods that are low in fructose and sugar and devoid of any substances, including sugar alcohols and pesticides, that are hard on the gut,” Pedre told mbg. Want more specifics? Below are the basic components of a gut-friendly diet:
Structure Of Our Digestive System
The lining of the digestive tract is made up of cell types called epithelial cells .
Our gut lining is only one cell thick of these cells!
This lining of the gut is called the brush border. The brush border protects us from the outside world, from unwanted bacteria, toxins, viruses, and more.
The digestive wall is like our skin, only much thinner and much more vulnerable. This digestive lining completely turns over every week .
This is faster than any type of cell turnover in the body. While very vulnerable, it is also very receptive to repair for this very reason!
The following factors help provide support for this digestive structure:
- Tight junctions
- Short-chain fatty acids from foods
- Healthy bacteria and microbes
The digestive wall also makes enzymes called brush border enzymes . Why is this important? Brush border enzymes help break down your food into usable forms for the body.

For example, partially digested proteins and fats may seep through the intestinal lining, making their way into the bloodstream, which causes an allergic response.

How To Heal Leaky Gut Naturally
If you suspect you might have increased intestinal permeability, you have a lot of options for healing leaky gut. Some physicians prescribe drugs for the condition, including antibiotics, antidepressants, and immune system suppressors, but pharmaceuticals always come with side effects of their own and fail to address the root cause of the issue. If your gut lining isnt sealed properly, no amount of drugs is going to seal it if you continue eating, drinking, or doing something that causes it to unseal or become permeable. Thankfully, there are many lifestyle-based, side-effect-free ways to heal leaky gut naturally.
Ultimately, the course of action that works for you will depend on the underlying cause of your increased intestinal permeability. But generally, taking steps to improve your overall gut health will support a strong intestinal lining and can help heal leaky gut.
